Vmware syslog gzip error stops logging

so we have a number of hosts that have a syslog location set to a dedicated log datastore which is backed by a dell compellent storage array and we have been suffering from the following errors on a couple of hosts, we have raised a ticket with vmware and were told to create a larger datastore for what I question as dubious reasons (4GB per host you are logging for and some very odd "peformance" reasons)

After having done this we are still seeing a few hosts every now and then throw the error again:

vmsyslog.loggers..file : ERROR ] Gzip logfile /vmfs/volumes/5dde919e-aa801c3c-e7d7-34e6d7dd4f35/*******.*********.******.****/hostd.0.gz failed.

Anyone have any suggestions?
