Ok, something else you could try is:
- remove the placeholder datastore (in SRM)
- evacuate all data off the datastore
- delete the datastore
- re-create a new datastore on the same LUN
- In SRM, register the new datastore as the placeholder datastore again.
Perform this on the target site firstly, and check if you can now create a protection group.
