Here is the "Maximum Config" doc: This type of question is always highly dependent on what the VMs will be doing and what resources are allocated to each one. I would say you would be able to get anywhere from 64 to 128 (single vCPU) VMs running, probably closer to the lower end than the higher. Don Pomeroy VMware Communities User Moderator

There are other ways to schedule reboots of servers than the Director agent. IMO Director is kind of flaky and has given us problems in the past. Personally I would remove the Director agents from VMs and use another method to schedule reboots. Even if you want to keep it, I wouldn't remove it from the physical box before doing the P2V, remove and reinstall after the P2V would be my plan. Don Pomeroy VMware Communities User Moderator

My Windows 2003 Clusters are working since December 2007 on ESX 3.5 pretty smooth I can say...the problem now when I check the requirements for Windows 2008 cluster it said: "Disk bus type does not support clustering". "Working" and "Supported" are two different things. And yes its still SCSI-2 on ESX 3.5. Don Pomeroy VMware Communities User Moderator

You can restore a bunch of VMs with just standard VC and ESX, they just don't have a nice automated way to deploy the whole group at once. If this was the only thing you were going to use Lab Manager for then it might not be worth the cost. Personally I would like to get Lab Manager to move some of the administrative overhead to the developers and let them deploy and manage their own development environments. I would try to give him 2 vCPUs and then monitor performance to see if it is acceptable. I is always easier to add more resources then take them away after being assigned. The other option is to increase the shares to the SQL VM so that it will take priority when there is resource contention, this plus 2 vCPUs might be enough to guarantee the performance he needs without have to set CPU affinity or moving VMs around. The other thing to consider if you have VI3 Enterprise is to let DRS work on fully auto. In this case the VMs will automatically be migrated with the cluster to balance performance for all VMs. Don Pomeroy VMTN Communities User Moderator

I think the confusion is being caused by bad decisions in the marketing department. AFAIK 3i would be able to be managed by VC and have all the advanced features, DRS, HA, etc. if those features are paid for. I believe that no Service Console is the future direction of ESX regardless of if it comes pre-installed on flash or embedded media in the server, or you install it on hard drives. Latest thing I've read in trade rags is that the 2.0GHz parts will trickle out in Aug. We probably wont see any servers shipping until late Aug. and into Sept. Higher speed CPUs will be even later. 'Barcelona' coming in August Sept. 10th is the official launch date for 1.9 and 2.0Ghz CPUs, faster speeds wont be until Oct. and later. Message was edited by: dpomeroy

not sure, presently I have HA disabled on all our systems, but in doing troubleshooting VMware support told me I had to have portfast enabled. This is interesting because the documentation doesn't say its required, just recommended. So Im just collecting info for when I get back to trying to get HA to work in our environment. I might just leave it off until "HA 2.0" comes out.
OK, is this the consensus: run 64-bit host and 32-bit guests, except where necessary to run 64-bit guests for whatever reason? BTW, the Citrix rep says they have 64-bit binaries, but .... ...
