The proper upgrade path is to update to vCenter 5.1 first, then upgrade the ESXi hosts afterwards. This has been the same process for ages with all VMware version upgrades. Upgrading vCenter is no problem (done that). I can see and manage all the ESXi5.0U1 hosts, but would rather use Update Manager in vCenter to upgrade them to 5.1 rather than the CD route, but, there is no 'upgrade esxi 5.0 -> 5.1' VIB file available, so nothing to import into Update Manager. It's not the end of the world, and the upgrade will still work I'm sure, but I would have thought this VIB would have been available when 5.1 became available.
