When you convert your windows pc from a physical machine to a virtual machine nothing happens to the original physical machine. It creates a virtual duplicate so you will have a physical machine and a virtual machine. If they are going to be on the same network you'll have to chage one of thier names and ip address. Have you seen the upgrade videos? Remember vSphere 4 is for 64 bit processors. I don't know what hardware your using so I'm just throwing that in.

You should have the Internet access at first to update your virtual os with the latest security updates. You will need a standard Windows (XP, Windows Server 2003, etc.) setup boot cd, not... See more...
You should have the Internet access at first to update your virtual os with the latest security updates. You will need a standard Windows (XP, Windows Server 2003, etc.) setup boot cd, not a restore cd that comes with most laptops. You will also need to install the Microsoft loopback adapter so that you don't have to connect your network cable to your nic. Install your VMware Server software, create a new virtual machine and use your windows boot cd for vm os installation. Connect your vm to the internet to update it and disconnect again.
Did you ever get to the logon page? Try entering the IP instead of the computer name in the URL. Did you try with IE?
can you confirm that the DHCP server is authorized using the DHCP manager.
