are you using local storage on your your hosts rather tahn shared storage?
try changing the contoller type or try using converter 3.03 per continuum http://communities.vmware.com/message/2023805#2023805

fasttrack wrote: Many thanks for you reply: So to sumup: 1) In case of SQL Server High Availability: using VSpere 5.1 HA/FT is not the right solutions? It means to use the Cluster feature provided by Microsoft ? use the MS cluster 2) When you write.....<in real world applications I rarely hear of anyone using it> do you mean for both the technologies: HA and FT? everyone uses HA no one uses FT (almost) 3) You say that FT do not support more than  1 vCPU. But if I am not wrong, I have read that 5.1 support more than 1 vCPU. Correct? http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r51/vsphere-51-configuration-maximums.pdf still 1 cpu per FT vm 4) .... Loosely coupled servers...... Please could you detailed? Many thanks

JaapB wrote: Hi, I have created a new cluster with 3 hosts (A,B,C) and enable HA/DRS on that cluster. In order to check the configuration i performed the following actions: put the host B containing a VM in maintenance mode. The VM was transfered to host C in the cluster exit maintenance mode on host B shutdown the host containing the VM (host C) in vcenter. The VM was transfered to Host B, but on host A i got the following configuration issue "the vSphere HA agent on this host cannot reach some of the management network addresses of the other hosts, and HA may not be able to restart VMs if a host failure occurs: host C" Anybody seen this issue before and knows how to resolve it? Any help will be appriceated. JaapB So you took host C down hard to test HA. that is why you are getting the message if you had placed host c in to maintnence mode and shut it down you wouldnt. HA is saying that htere is a missing host. http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2016261

you could connect to the host vcenter is one and then update the vm manually. via the client.

try this: http://libertysys.com.au/blog/p2v-of-windows-server-2008-from-efi-gpt-to-vmware-mbr there is no direct solution but if you come across one that would be great. an alterative: converter can convert the following Acronis True Image Echo 9.1, 9.5, and Acronis True Image 10.0, 11.0 (Home product) Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (formerly LiveState Recovery) 6.5, 7.0, 8.0 and 8.5, LiveState Recovery 3.0 and 6.0 (only .sv2i files) Norton Ghost version 10.0, 11.0, 12.0, 13.0, and 14.0 (only .sv2i files) Parallels Desktop 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0 StorageCraft ShadowProtect 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 So if you can use one of those you can do a p2v indirectly.
are you moving it to a different VMFS volume? you probably arent. http://sparrowangelstechnology.blogspot.com/2012/08/storage-vmotion-completes-in-zero.html
since its not in production you can jsut change the DNS entries, no need to reinstall. restart the mgmt agents or reboot after you are done.

newbe33 wrote: Hello, I successfully installed ESXI 5.1.0 on a DELL Poweredge T620. Then I need to access VSphere server from a VSphere client... but I cannot connect the VSphere server to my local network and it seems the problem has to do with the network adapters. From VSphere server interface I go to Management Network -> Network Adapters : I find two adapters, one of which is checked:      (checked) - Embedded NIC 1  (MAC address) status: Disconnected      - Embedded NIC 2  (MAC address) status: Disconnected ( no light on the RJ45 plug when using "Test Management Network" option to ping the gateway... ) I went through devices BIOS menu and found some information but I don't really understand:      here is a sample for device Intel Gigabit 2P i350 -t LOM:           - Firmware image properties : Family version 13.5.6           - Legacy boot protocol: PXE           - Link speed: AutoNeg (I tried to change to 10 MB - Half (router configuration) but no effect)           - Wake on LAN: Disabled           => Port Configuration Information: (cannot be changed)                - UEFI Driver: intel PRO/1000 5.0.08                - Adpater PBA: 105600-000                - Chip type: intel i350                - PCI Device ID: 1521                - PCI Bus:Device:Function: 6:0:0                - Link status: Disconnected I Don't know how to proceed to solve this problem, and I cannot find some documentation on Intel Gigabit 2P i350 -t LOM, has someone an idea? Thanks untill the bios sees it as connected, esxi wont see it connected. concentrate on teh ethernet wire or port that you plugged it into.
you can update the hosts via command line if you shutdown vcenter. http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/02/quickest-way-to-patch-an-esxesxi-using-the-command-line.html

ftfcu wrote: I have a question about Extent vs Increase the size of a datastore.  I am not sure if they are one and the same. If I have a 200GB LUN Presented to me and I make a 200GB Datastore.  We realize that we actually needed it to be 400GB.  In our case the SAN Administrator grows the LUN and thus we can increase the size of the datastore.  Is this an extent?  I am not adding two LUNS together to make more size. The alternative is of course to create a NEW 400GB LUN and the storage vmotion over to it, but if the above is not dangerous or going to rob performance than we would prefer that. Any thoughts? extent would be spanning the datastore across different luns. increase size of datastore would actually enlarge it IF you have space avaialble on the lun or expanded it on your storage first if the san admin grows it it isnt an extent. svmotion to a larger datastore is fine too. http://sparrowangelstechnology.blogspot.com/2012/07/growing-and-expanding-vmfs.html here you can see the vm was not affected by increasing the datastore

patches are cumulative. you dont need vma, its good for multiple hosts. just ssh into your box directly if you only have one box

jamesgreen wrote: Hi all, I'm looking for a solution that will boot VM's on demand based on the load on other VM's, perhaps in the same resource pool. Essentially, the desired outcome would be something like this: - When VM01 reaches 75% CPU utilization for 15 minutes, - Boot VM02 - Once VM01 has been under 40% utilization for 30 minutes, - Shut down VM02 This could also be a new VM that is spun up from a template and sysprepped, rather than one that is just sitting there off and unused. Hopefully that makes the end goal clear. Does anyone have a recommendations on how to do this? I just did a quick search on some terms I thought would be relevant and didn't really turn anything up. Thanks for your input! -James with bringing vm02 up you could set the alarm action to start a script that will start vm02. powercli command would be start-vm -vm VM02 you could probably add a alarm where if vm01 has a cpu below 40% run another script the command is: shutdown-vmguest -vm -VM02
is the firmware all patched up? there might be something that win2012 is ok with that faults the esxi hypervisor
