If you power off your VM (not suspend, but actually shutdown the guest and power off), the menu item in the "Virtual Machine" menu called "Upgrade Virtual Machine" will become active. Simply select that, and that should lead you through the upgrade process. It may take a few minutes, but once it's done, everything should be good to go.

Could you look in the install.log file? This can be found at /var/log/install.log Sometimes a kext doesn't unload properly. I see this occasionally. Sometimes a restart will help, but if you posted the log file here (or the pertinent information) that would be useful. You can also view the installer log file when installer hasn't closed the final pane yet. (it's available in the menus).

CTRL-keys still work as you expect. We only intercept the Apple-Key. We do this for window mode changes, and a couple of other menu items. In other cases the Apple-Key is translated to a ctrl-key and sent to the VM. The side effect of this is that you can't easily send the "windows" key to windows. Other than that, all other keyboard shortcuts should work as you expect.
