I discovered the answer. It was rather annoying as  I wanted the toolbar drop down so I could update the vmware tools (I usually just right click the tab and choose update VM tools) Unfortunately I have my VM's set to go into full screen on power up I changed that to go to a window on start up. upgraded VMware tools and the issue is gone.
Thanks for the reply.  As it turned out I started having difficulty with the Windows 7 VM's as well. I decided to uninstall Workstation. uninstall all the adapters and delete all left over fil... See more...
Thanks for the reply.  As it turned out I started having difficulty with the Windows 7 VM's as well. I decided to uninstall Workstation. uninstall all the adapters and delete all left over files and registry keys. So far after a reinstall of VM workstation my vista VM's can access the internet as before. I am going to assume something became corrupt in the VM Workstation application or in the Network adapters Cheers
