Other than upgrade to 6.7 can I fix metadata errors on vmfs6 on 6.5 installation? I am running a whitebox with an i7-950 on it, so 6.7 gives immediate "unsupported cpu" error upon booting from install media.  I guess what am looking for is a Live rescue boot that can be loaded with an option to ignore cpu check (running voma -m vmfs -f fix doesn't really require anything special from a cpu) or some other way to carry out this operation on a standalone installation with no vcenter. I have neither the extra hdd of sufficient size to migrate off of this host, nor am I overly impressed by the speed of such operation.  The VM is in the excess of 2TB in size so I can't really shuffle it back and forth like measly 500MB. Any live boot solution will do.  It's highly preferabe that I don't alter the running hypervisor installation.  At this point I am interested purely in how it can be done, reagardless of issues of affordability.

No one.  Those that think they do, they just don't know how to get the desired effect otherwise. To those who seek this kind of solution, I have two concepts for you: NAT port forwarding and Out-of-band management controller.  That's it.  Don't be lazy, make a few clicks.  No one is paying to automate this.  Or get reading on the scripting API.  Not that it will help 100%, but who knows.

Hello. My apologies in advance if this is not the right place to ask my question.  If so, may the moderator please appropriately move the topic. I have an HP Proliant DL-180 G6 running vSphere 5.0 (so far, in trial mode).  What I want is to see the state of the disk array and its elements.  I am not very experienced with vSphere, so if someone can please give me step-by-step requirements and directions as to where to get and how to install the appropriate provider onto the system so that I can monitor the array health status, that would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, I have only one server, so I have no opportunity to move the VM running vCenter to another machine, should this procedure require interacting with the machine while it's in maintenance mode via vCenter.  Please bear that in mind when giving your advice. Thank you very much for your help. Alex.
So, to reiterate, if I have two identical servers, both with their own respective local datastores, they CANNOT behave as a cluster?

Hi. I vaguely recall seeing somewhere the limitation list for clustering vsphere hosts, which basically came down to vmotion limitations. By that I mean that it was a document describing how two hosts have to match and differences they can afford to have. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone point me towards that info. Also, am I right to assume that a cluster configuration is quite workable without a shared datastore? How much of a performance hit is involved in refraining from it (MS SQL usage scenario)? Wouldn't shared storage mean a single point of failure, kind of defeating the idea of clustering? Thank you so much for your answers. Alex.

Folks, 9240-4i differs from 9240-8i only in number of ports.  I am running the latter on a white box with no issues whatsoever, so carefully examine your BIOS settings, it's all in the motherboard.  I am using an ASUS Sabertooth X58 and it's running just fine.  The only issue I'm having is getting the raid health info to show up in vsphere client, but that's in a different thread.

Hi. I have a whitebox with LSI Megaraid 9240-8i running ESXi 5.1 I would like to monitor the disk array state via vSphere client.  What do I need to do to achieve this?  Do I need to install any CIMs?  How?  I'm a newbie to vSphere. I do have physical access to the host.  I don't have another host to migrate my machines to and my vCenter is running as a VM, so if a procedure requires entering maintenance mode, the vCenter VM will become unavailable.  Hence, I guess, a procedure that does not rely on vCenter is wanted. Thank you for your help. Alex.
