You can use a V2V tools to do this.
In my opinion,FT does not support SMP is not a fouction problem. The single vCPU will cause performance problem Self-evident.
FT still has a lot of limitation. Most of the product environment could not use it,because of the performance.

The ways you are going to chose both good. But When you chose one,you must know what you really want to.Boot from san or boot form local disk is not important, the most important thing is what you really need. In common time, boot from local disk is a good way for using. When the ESXi hypervisor has problems, you can reinstalls it.VMs should be storaged in the san disk array, this way can avoid much host problem, even disaster.
If you are using vmware esxi 4.1,just try to use HD controller as IDE model. When you used SCSI controller to install XP os,the SCSI driver is inneed.

Hi,knight. As you know, the VCB is free for used, but it only supports fully backup.VDR supports more function, just like Differences backup, but it needs advanced license,ENT,ENT plus. One thing you must pay attention,VCB and VDR only can backup VMs. If you buy a third party Backup software, you do not only backup ESX,you also could backup other application, just like DB,file or any others. The third party backup software supplys you can do all the backup job in one environment.
Just do a test, you will know. ESXi is the next generation.

When U use the converter to resize your vm's disks, you can change it in the V2V progress. If you want to manage your storage space usability, maybe you can use the thin provisior.
Hello you can look the following links. http://wenku.baidu.com/view/e6f47d0e52ea551810a687ef.html http://www.vmware.com/appliances/getting-started/learn/ovf.html
Maybe you can use export the VM,not download. The OVF's size will be small than what you were using.
Without the service console how can you use the GUI mgmt ? You can build a vSwitch, which only includes a vmkernel port. You can use it to connecte your iSCSI strorage.

This communities's servers are really response slowly. I refreshed twice, it done‘t print my edit message.
Oh,by the way:When a ESX server goes offline, the virtual machine is not migrated, but restarted on the other hosts.Or you can say the other hosts restart the vm.

Nice question. First, you should know which traffic is the management information, and which is the data information. Second, you described a HA happen time. And at this time you should know anther thing is that you had opened the VM detecting which can be configed at the cluster “edit setting”. Help with the vmtools, your VC and ESX hosts can always detect your VM running. When you use RDP to connect with your VMs, the data traffic will use the VM port group,at the same time VC and your ESX hosts use the service console to detect you VM’s status. So, you can see,the management traffic will always use the service console, and the community information with the VM will be always used the VM port group. BTW:When a host offline, VMs on it are not migrated, but restart on the other hosts or you can say other hosts restart those VMs.
It's a really good idea which run Xenapp on the VM. But, if you want to have a good customer experienced, you‘d better run it on the physical servers.
