You can actually just disconnect the host from the old vCenter with VMs running, then remove the host from the old vCenter (still with VMs running), then add the host to the new vCenter (still with VMs running).  I've not tried this method, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.  I've had to do the same within a vCenter before so that I could add hosts in by DNS name instead of IP.  The other method is safer (using Maintenance Mode).
Which version of vCenter are you running?  If it's not vCenter 5.0, it's not supported to run an ESXi 5.0 host. Doug.

Just to let everyone who commented on this thread know, this is now being recognised by VMware as a bug (they have a PR open with multiple SRs attached). We have seen the exact same problems with hosts running MSCS clusters with physical mode RDMs, but our experience has been far worse than those reported on this thread.  One of our hosts still hadn't booted after 9 hours when tested the other day! Currently they are talking about a fix in Q3 2011 (!) but we a pressing them on that as for us that's just unacceptable.

OK - managed to resolve my own problem by resolving another........ Noticed that the Performance Overview charts in vCenter were throwing an error - restarted the vCenter Management Webservices service on the vCenter server, that resolved the Perf Charts error and the SQL event logs stopped being generated too.
