Dear Ashish, I use to get the same question when I started learning VMware. Let me make an attempt to convey my thoughts and let me know if they have helped you. What is vSphere ? vSphere is suite of products packaged shipped by VMware virtualization company, which includes products. Like VMware ESXi hypervisor, VMware vCenter Server, etc. VMware ESXi ? ESXi or hypervisor is bare metal OS which virtualizes x86 server hardware. You use ESXi ( OS ) installation  media to install OS on top of hardware just like you install any other OS like Windows or Linux Once you have VMware ESXi installed on a x86 server hardware I is ready to virtualized. What does it mean ? - It means you can now use same server to create , configure, run more than one virtual machines and install required Operating systems within Virtual Machines they are referred as Guest Operating systems which could be Windows or Linux etc Further, vCenter server is another VMware Product shipped in vSphere bundle that helps you manage one or more ESXi servers from a centralized location. I am hoping this answers your both queries. Please let me know if that helps you and if you need any further clarification I will be glad to discuss with you further. Virtually, vAseem

Interesting thread.. this helped thank you guys. I had a situation as below : A cluster of 3 ESX 4.1 in a data center and each data center has its own UPS The requirement was to turn off HA first, smoot powerdown VMs and then power down host. /etc/opt/init.d/vmware-aam shutdown ; vmware-cmd -l | while read i ; do vmware-cmd $i stop trysoft && /sbin/shutdown -hP now ; done I run this and seen working well for me and on one of my customers machine. Disclaimer : written as hobby neither VMware nor I are responsible for if any damages caused. Hope it helps

@ Automatic detection of operating system failures. HA detects operating system failures within virtual machines by monitoring heartbeat information. If a failure is detected, the affected virtual machine is automatically restarted on the server. From http://www.vmware.com/products/high-availability/features.html According to above lines: HA could restart / reset only one/ affected  VM on a ESX host due to hardware / software failures So, if the h/w or s/w failures occur on host I have learned so far they affect ESX / OS running on bare box ⇒ all VMs running on heypervisor must be affetcetd My question sis : Is it possible that only one VMs could  experience HA trigger due hardwar or software failure ? My understanding is if H/w S/w failure happens it affects full ESX box Please comment on above: I have a situation In logs of a VM i see ie vmware.log Sep 14 16:14:47.004: vmx| Vix: [104333 vmxCommands.c:392]: VMAutomation_Reset Sep 14 16:14:47.016: vmx| Vix: [104333 vmxCommands.c:457]: VMAutomation_Reset. Trying hard reset Sep 14 16:14:47.017: vmx| Sep 14 16:14:47.017: vmx| Sep 14 16:14:47.017: vmx| VMXRequestReset Sep 14 16:14:47.018: vmx| Stopping VCPU threads.. According to KB Determining if a High Availability Virtual Machine Monitoring event caused a virtual machine to reboot http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1027734 This happens when HA triggers But, if HA has triggered it should affect all VMs per the definition rt ? Is it possible that HA have triggered restart of a only one VM on a ESX box ?
