Rajeev, Looks like you have a lot of questions around VMC, you should probably contact your dedicated VMware sales team to get in touch with a specialist. Going back to your question, we do not have an official tool within VMC to import on premises NSX-T rules. Do you have hundreds or thousand defined rules? If it's just a question of dozens, could be more efficient to do it manually and take the opportunity to clean it. But you have some "unofficial" ways to export/import rules as per these websites : - Wiliam Lam blog: https://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2019/01/managing-distributed-firewall-rules-in-vmc-using-powershell-nsx-t-policy-api.htm… - A github project: GitHub - tonysangha/PowerNSX-DFW2Excel: Export the NSX for vSphere Distributed Firewall to MS Excel Hope that helps and don't forget to set my answer as useful. Cheers Emmanuel

Rajeev, Even if both are doing L2 Extension, it's slightly different: - L2 extension is the way to go, if you just need to get workloads on both side (on premises and cloud) to communicate or eventually doing a VM per VM migration. But you really need to plan this interconnection for workload communication at an app level within same subnet. - HCX Network extension: HCX main purpose is to migrate with many options (cold migration, hot migration, change VM options like thin/thick disk, VM tools version, virtual hardware...) with the ability to stretch a DVS to the Cloud. So, you have the ability to migrate VMs and keeping same IP, same subnet and eventually unstretch this network once your entire subnet has been migrated if needed to avoid the tromboning effect (default gateway stays at source side). I hope these explanation helps you to understand the difference between the two. You have to know that both of these are included in VMware Cloud on AWS at no additional costs: virtual appliance are provided within the interface. Cheers Emmanuel

Manivel, I've answered to a quite similar request on this forum, please have a look, but long story short: AWS Import/export tool works if EC2 instance was initially converted from VMware to AWS. Other way to do it is the tool you mention, I've heard we can also convert from AMI to vSphere. Otherwise, you need to reinstall your app into VMware, since this is a tricky process to convert from EC2. Emmanuel

Rajeev, You can find a great explanation of NSX-T Advantages we choose to integrate within VMware Cloud on AWS: Unveiling NSX-T 2.5 – A New Marker on the Innovation Timeline | VMware Even if NSX-V was included in first time of VMware Cloud on AWS, we decided to move to NSX-T that brings more feature and interconnection possibilities: we are talking about Cloud use case and not only on premise: integration with native AWS Services and ENI (link between our respective VPC's); Hybrid linked mode with on premises, etc... Hope that helps Emmanuel

Hi, I'd ask myself this question: why do I need to migrate an EC2 instance to VMware? This instance has probably some dependancies in AWS (EBS, S3, RDS...) so migrating only one component can be tricky. So, if you are still convinced you need to do it, you have many ways to do it, but is this EC2 instance is a fresh EC2 instance or was it converted from VMware as well? - using AWS import/export tool : VM Import/Export (works only if previously a VMware VM) - A tool to do it: VMware Knowledge Base https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vm-import/latest/userguide/vmexport.html These conversion could be not 100% efficient, you have to figure out with network adapters, Re-IP, cold migration, dependancies with other components, etc... Hope that helps Emmanuel

Hi Luc, Tried it in the meanwhile and could export it but I don't understand why it generates an error. I'd like to get a statement about dVS in the export-VApp cmdlet, if someone has the official answer ? Could bee useful for potential use cases in the future... Thanks anyway !

Hi, Trying to export a VMware vCenter Operations Manager (v5.6) from a vCenter v5.0.0 to a folder, to import later in a new vCenter environment (v5.1). Just played with the export-VApp cmdlet but got following error: Export-VApp : 3/29/2013 1:49:38 PM    Export-VApp        Failed to retrieve OVF descriptor for the export operation with the following errors: One or more properties are refering to an unknown network 'dvPortGroup 062'. At line:1 char:69 + get-Vapp -Name "VMware vCenter Operations Manager 5.6" | Export-VApp <<<<  -D estination "z:\VMware\backup\" -Format Ova -Force     + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (VirtualApp-resgroup-v742:ManagedO    bjectReference) [Export-VApp], ViError     + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ViCore_VappServiceImpl_ExportVApp_ExportSpecFail    ed,VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Cmdlets.Commands.ExportVApp Here's my script : get-Vapp -Name "VMware vCenter Operations Manager 5.6" | Export-VApp -Destination "z:\VMware\backup\" -Format Ova -Force Just to precise that this vApp containing 2 VMs (vCops UI VM & Analytics) is powered off, running well and bound to a dVS and dVportGroup well configured. Any idea? thanks by advance

Hi all, Is there any people with similar issue, please? I tried many things but nothing can stop this issue at random interval. I still can vmkping my Iomega NAS, he's still reachable through other protocols (ftp, cifs,...) but inactive on ESX/vCenter in NFS mode. I've changed tcpheapsize and each parameter as explained on Iomega IX2 User manual. thanks Emmanuel Pitoovi-La virtualisation http://www.pitoovi.com

If you want to spend useful time on VMware Workstation to prepare your VCP exam, do you know that you can download it as a 30 days trial version here: And don't forget that once you have successfully passed VCP exam, you get a workstation license. So, take your browser, download it and enjoy a faster experience! Emmanuel Pitoovi-La virtualisation

Dale, Just before investigating further, have you checked and followed this document: I was always used to install ESX on VMware workstation, not Server, but it's a license problem that you probably meet and forced you to run it on Server version. Have you activate this parameters? monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware" and monitor.virtual_mmu = "hardware" (if your CPU handles EPT/RVI) see: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9150 Let us know if it solved your issue and don't forget to rate my answer. Hi all, Can, you, please give me your feedback about ESX installation on this machine? It could be a cheap solution to host ESX with its 2 x CPUs (dual or quad cores), 16 Gb RAM max Checked vm-help and ultimatewhitebox sites but nothing about it! thanks!
