Hi All, I have a site which has a server where the host RAID set has been broken. I need to reinstall the VMWare ESX Server, 3.0.1, 32039 on this host but no longer have the install media. Is there anyway of downloading old versions of ESX anywhere? Agreed, however the MacPro tower is a work machine that I have available to use for testing ESXi at the moment. Thats what I thought regarding "... Virtualization Technology cannot get passed to a VM (server on ESXi host) within a VM (virtual ESXi host)...", hence I asked about running ESXi barebone on the MacPro tower.  Sounds like trying to get around the Apple EFI boot partition is going to be more trouble than it's worth though. What would you recomend when you say "... There are some excellent priced server hardware out there if you just know where to look..."? TIA Danny

Hi All, I can create an ESXi5 Lab as follows: Host = MacPro OS X 10.5 (Dual Quad Core Xeon 2008) 1st Layer virtualisation = VMWare Fusion 2nd Layer virtualisation = ESXi5 3rd Layer virtualisation = does 'not' allow for for 64bit OS (Windows 2008 R2).  A 32bit OS does install fine. a)- As I understand it, although the host cpu's are Xeon and support Intel VT-x technology, the Apple Bios (EFI) settings switch VT-x off!  Is this correct and/or is there a fix? b)- If there is no fix for (a) Has anyone managed to install and crate a Lab environment for ESXi5 barebone on a MacPro ? TIA Danny

Hi All, I have got 8 VM guest machines (Novell OES SLES) running in VI3 ESX3.1 & the they keep losing timesync (time keeps slipping by 3 or 4 mins). I have set the NTPD service on all of the guest machines to a source external to VI3 (e.g. an NTP server on our network), restarting the NTPD service contacts the NTP server and gets the correct time, running NTPDATE also does the same but if I do not manually intervene the time slips out of sync. I have read lots of different ways to setup time sync sources but am now a little confused wether I should set the guest to get it's time from the Host via VMWare Tools & also there are threads suggesting edditing grub boot files! Help! Is there any official way of setting up time sources for SLES VM guests? TIA Danny

Hi All, Interesting, & similar scenario for me! I'm at the ''should I go iSCSI or FC..!'' stage. Also with a choice of either HP EVA4000 series or an EqualLogic PS3600x SAN devices, I'm trying to figure out what would be the best combination... http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=102080&tstart=0 The environment where I work is a new build and where at the design stage (all though it's got to be fully functional by Jan 08) theres lots of sales people trying to sell their product that the overall picture sometimes gets a little blurred and a good old chat in a forum tends help Also we're have a two server room environment, approx 100m appart. Our problem at the moment is, what is the best combination of: -FC/iSCSI (respectively) -HP-EVA4000/EqualLogic-PS3600x to host a large VI3 project, that also aims to be HA/DRS Vmotion enabled, across both of the SAN's & all servers? Hardware: -HP C Class proliants -SunMicrosystems v40z (16Gb Ram, 20000Ghz) Any suggestions or tips welcome TIA Danny

Hi All, I'm looking for some advice on what good/bad points I should consider when buying a SAN for use with VI3. The college I work for is investing upgrading back-end hardware, we are going to be using a mash-up of Sun v40z servers & HP C class proliants, all connected to a SAN, questions is should we use Fibre Channel or iSCSI. The SAN units we are considering are either an HP EVA4000 or an Equallogic PS3600X (http://www.equallogic.com). We have been aiming for an HP EVA for the last year, but during the last month Equallogic have demoed their PS3600X unit & I was very impressed (not that I'm an expert regarding SANs). So, I'm hoping that someone will share their experiences with different units (hopefully an HP EVA &/or an Equallogic) I mean an HP EVA is a safe bet but, can an Equallogic unit really outperform an HP as they claim? TIA Danny
