Hiya everyone, Long time no see. I was pretty surprised at hearing this news today. It sent ripples through the entire virtualization industry. First, a couple of business related thoughts: 1) Microsoft presents a real threat in this space, but doesn't offer the wide variety of other virtualization tools that VMware has in it's toolbox. Also, the MS technology is not likely to be as robust or stable as the VMware core technology, at least not in these early stages. 2) VMware certainly has a business challenge ahead of them. Coopetition with MS is no longer the possibility it once was for VMware. Having a new CEO onboard who understands the business side of Mightcrosoft at a very high level is probably a good thing. 3) The fact that EMC, VMware, and Diane herself didn't have any specific things to say leads me to believe it was not an amicable breakup. I have no inside knowledge of what happened, but it doesn't look like it was one of those "I'm tired and I'm going to walk away" type of things. On a more personal note: I didn't know Diane super-well, but I had occasion to speak with her briefly on many occasions. She's personable, approachable, and was a fantastic field general when I was working for VMware. She was all for the creation of our first knowledgebase (which I was the lead project guy for), and was an avid supported of these boards, even when they were small and growing. She recognized individual contributions of people that did well inside the building at VMware, and was quick to take corrective actions when things weren't going the way she thought they should. She made sure to take care of the employee stockholders when EMC bought VMware. A lot of things could have played out when that happened, but the employess losing their options, having them devalued, or some other bad thing, was not acceptable. I, as well as many others who were there during the very early stages of the company, really appreciated that. Thanks for your great leadership Diane. Although you may never read this, I'll always consider you one of the good guys. Peace, everyone. Think happy thawts and keep on truckin.

Hello all, Starting this thread here since I can't find a more appropriate location for it... Tomorrow is my final day in the employ of VMware, Inc. I'm relocating to an area where there's not a VMware office, and have decided to start a small business and try to make a go of it as an owner. Wish me luck!! Over the last few years, it has been a distict pleasure acting as the forum main moderator and administrator. "Steering the brick", as it were, has never been more fun In those few years, I watched this user forum turn from small watering hole, to semi-popular advice site, and finally into the virtualization discussion center of the universe that it is today. A tremendous amount of behind the scenes work has been done along the way to keep the site going strong and keep the people happy, and I have a lot of people to thank for that. You all know who you are. I'll make comment that my leaving will not change the way that this community is managed. VMware values what their users have to say, values free speech (within the constraints of the terms of use), and will continue to monitor and moderate this forum after I'm gone. A replacement community manager/administrator will be found, and life will go on. You guys ARE in good hands with VMware. While a replacement for me is found, there are a couple of forum users who will be helping do moderation and administration: rdellimmagine johntroyer are the go-to guys for now. I'm sure that they'll chime in here and make comments if there are any management issues or questions going forward. When a replacement community manager is found, you'll most likely hear the news from them. Finally, I'd like to thank a few individuals and small groups of people (some of which may never read this thread) for helping me along the way: 1) My co-workers who had a direct hand in making the forums a success. Michael, Scott, Julie, Jason, Stephen, Robert, John - you guys are the best and I'll miss you all. 2) The User Moderation crew. You guys know who you are. You'll never meet a nicer group of guys than the volunteer user mods that moderate the VMTN Forums. You are the guys who keep the forums going on a daily basis, and I'll never forget ya. 3) All of the people inside of VMware who helped me along the way - Kris, Challo, Kenon, Craig, Hans - I'll never forget those early days in support when we were loud and crazy and nobody wanted to sit in the office next to us It has been a REAL pleasure guys. I would not trade the last three years for anything. On to the next big adventure!!!! -Daryll
Moving to virtualization general discussion. I can't fix this problem on the forums -Daryll

At the request of the original poster, I am locking this thread. It's not a behavior issue or anything like that, the OP wants all of the comments/conversation in one place. If you would like to follow up on this topic OR make comments, there is another thread that they would prefer you added to: http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=77227 Thanks, Daryll

Hey there, According to a couple of our top support engineers, it should not be nessecary to invoke esxcfg-firewall --allowOutgoing in order to perform the function you're trying to perform. Since there's probably something specific to your environment going on, or some information missing from the problem description, we can't write a KB article or more documentation without a better understanding of the specific problem you're having. My suggestion would be to open a support ticket with VMware and have them look into this issue. I'm going to move this posting to the ESX configuration forum for more comments. -Daryll
