Thanks a million Troy. I went up this morning and set it to use Foundation and voila, all working. I never noticed that selection before (probably because the production install of VMWare was done before Foundation was an option).

That helps. So then should I be able to use a Foundation license from the normal vCenter client, or is there a separate client? I already have the esx license, as well as one vCenter Foundation license, I'm just not clear if there is a separate vCenter for foundation vs the full blown one. My full blown vCenter install didn't seem to recognize the Foundation license. Thanks! Matt

This might be a dumb question, but I am having trouble finding information on vcenter foundation. Is vCenter foundation the same as vCenter, except it only supports three hosts? Does it work with ESX or is it just for Server? Where can I download a copy? I had a vCenter Foundation license in my list that I downloaded and tried with a normal vCenter install but it does not seem to work. The situation I am looking at this for is a secure ESX lab that currently has only one ESX host in it, and may grow to another, but I don't think (as of now) it will grow much past that. It needs to be a totally standalone (in its own network segmented from the regular network, etc...), so it needs its own vCenter. In order to cut the costs down I noticed vCenter Foundation, but couldn't find any kind of information about it, other than it only supports 3 hosts. Any assistance anyone can provide would be very much appreciated! Matt

Thanks for the reply. Since it's Friday afternoon I don't think I will be trying this any more today. Monday I'll give it a shot on one host and see what happens. Matt

I have been diligent about updating esx 3.5 when I'm notified that update manager downloaded patches (a bit too diligent as I was hit by the time bomb). I got an email the other day that UM had downloaded new patches. Today I went into VC and did a Scan for Updates on a host (2 hosts actually). It came up and said I had 53 non-compliant updates. I looked at what it says are non-compliant and it lists patches going back to March as being missing, but two weeks ago everything was up to date. What scares me even more is that Update 2 is one of the patches listed as missing, and after the time bomb fiasco I'm extremely leery of installing these patches. Has anyone else seen this type of thing from Update Manager? If so, what did you do? Thanks for any information anyone can provide Matt
My results: 10 hosts, used Update Manager to do the update, VMotioned all vm's off host, applied patch, set date/time to current day, no problems I see.

Hi all - I was wondering if anyone here could recommend any web based training or books on VI3. I have installed, configured, and maintained VI3 here, and now I'd like to get more in-depth about the product. I'm looking for something that goes beyond the "this is virtualization" and "here's how you install VI3" and get more into the internals, like "here's how something works underneath". Hopefully that makes some sense. Does anyone have a receommendation? Thanks Matt

Thanks to all for your replies and links. It's very helpful. It seems like the correct answer is... it depends. I'll probably go with 1 vmdk file unless there is a reason to go with multiple. I do want to avoid having a bazillion little vmdk files scattered around. Again, thanks to all. I'm not sure there is a "correct" answer to this question. Matt

Hi everyone - I had a question concerning best practices, and I wondered what others are doing. Currently all VM's here are using one vmdk file, then partitioning it in Windows into 2 partitions (a C: and an E:). We have started running into vm's that need their C: drive to be expanded, but as I understand it I can only extend the E: drive (the last partition) when there is only one vmdk file, but with a bit of effort (disconnect the C: from it's vm, attach to a helper vm, expand, then attach back to original vm) a vmdk file with a single system drive on it can be expanded. How do you do your vm's with multiple drives? Do you do it like I am now with one vmdk partitioned in the OS, or do you make separate vmdk files for each drive? I thought I had seen somewhere a limit to the number of vmdk files per LUN, but I can't seem to find that any more. Did that change between 2.5.x and 3.0.x (I'm using 3.0.x now, started with 2.5.x) Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer me Matt
