Just as an addendum, I can connect to the host remotely but I'm not sure how I can vmotion machines off when connected directly to the host.

The database server that was storing the vCenter database had an issue and I was forced to move the database to another database server (SQL Server). I did a backup and restore using SQL Server. vCenter will connect fine and loads up, but there are 3 hosts that I just recently (last week) upgraded to v5 from v4, and after I moved the database vCenter will not communicate with them, even to disconnect them. I see an error in the yellow "alert box" that tells me it's a bad user name and password, which I understand is the internal vmware password, not root. My question is, how can I get the hosts disconnected so I can reconnect and redo the password, without having to power off the host and take all the VMs on it down with it. Yes they will start up on other hosts, but there is still a downtime and I'll get complained at. The other hosts that I have not upgraded are working fine, just the ones I recently upgraded are having the problem. And yes, before this database problem I was able to disconnect, reconnect, whatever. Now I can't even put them in maintenance mode. I tried restarting the management network, but that doesn't help. I need to get to the shell on an ESXi 5 server to turn off Netqueue, since it's hosing up this machine for some reason. I turned on the shell and the service is running. I also have Direct Console UI turned on and enabled. I go to the console on the host, and I log in just fine. I go into the shell, and when it prompts me to authenticate I enter the same root password I just used to log in, and now it tells me "Authentication Failed". Is there another password I'm supposed to be using for shell access? Matt

I was notified of a problem where an alert was set up to alarm at 90% CPU. This alarm has triggered several times, but looking at the CPU statistics does not show any points where the CPU went to 90%. In researching this I found these entries in the system logs. It looks to me there is a bug wither in VMWare code, or the field in the database needs changed to a larger number format. Anyone else see this? A month or so ago I replaced the server that vCenter Server was running on due to end of lease. Since the talk is everything going to 64 bit, I installed Windows server 2008, 64 bit. Then I set up vSphere Server with no problems. Over all it seems to work ok, but it's extremely flakey. The Web service crashes several times a day, every day. I try to look at the hardware status and all I get is "No new host data available". The performance overview page works sometimes but not others (mostly it doesn't work. Sometimes I get an error, other times I don't). Just a lot of these type of things. Is there a problem running vSphere Server 4.0 U2 on a 64 bit machine? I'm tempted to take it back to 32 bit and be done with it. I didn't seem to have near the problems on 32 bit server 2003 as I do on the latest and "greatest". Matt
I meant to come back and post what I did, but then I forgot. I upgraded VC to U2 and all of a sudden it worked. Apparently EVC had some issues in U1. Matt
I agree, very odd. I knew to turn VT on because I made that mistake before. Matt
VT is turned on, and also Execution Disable is on. Matt

I currently have a cluster set up with 14 hosts in it . They are all either 5570, 5160, or 5460 Intel processors, and I have EVC mode set to Xeon Core 2. It's been working fine, but now I need to replace a host that is going end of lease. The new machine has 2 @ 5650 6 core processors in it. I took the old host out of the cluster, built the new one, and tried to add it to the cluster and got: "The host's CPU hardware does not support Enhanced VMotion Compatibility, which is enabled for this cluster." I found many articles and postings about this [problem, but no solution. The processor is on the supported processors list for EVC. I'm using v4.0 of vCenter and ESX . Does anyone have any ideas to try before I open a ticket with VMWare? Matt
Thanks for that information. I'll start digging into the logs. Matt

I have a small group of people defined as Administrators on the farm I manage. Recently someone made some permissions changes and messed things up. Naturally nobody did anything, so I want to determine who made the permissions changes and when. I did look through the logs by filtering for the word permissions but nothing came up. I am going to make them much more limited administrators in the very near future, but I still want to know who changed it. Is there a log somewhere I can use to determine who made the change? Thanks Matt

I canceled an update manager scan several days ago and the message about me canceling it is still in the recent tasks list. How do I get rid of these? I have another one from today and it's a pain having to scroll past these as they build up there and never go away. I thought I saw somewhere that restarting the vCenter service clears them, but that's ridiculous. Isn't there a "non-downtime" way to get rid of these? They should just go away like all normal messages do. Matt

I am in the planning phase of phase 3 of the ESX to vSphere upgrade. I am going to use update manager to do what vmware calls an orchestrated upgrade. I wanted to do the machines by cluster (I have 3), but I was wondering how vum will handle the machines that don't have vmware tools installed. There are a couple of machines (all linux) that can't have vmware tools installed (the vendor does not provide login information and refuses to allow vmware tools to be installed). Will vum see it's not on there and just skip the vm or will it make an attempt to install and possibly corrupt the vm? Matt

The SAN guy here asked me for information on ESX and SAN. I pointed him to the SAN configuration guide, but I wondered if there were any other web pages, white papers, etc that I could provide him. He's trying to get a general (and better) understanding of the details of ESX - SAN interaction. Right now the focus is on SAN migration, because a new SAN (an IBM XIV) was purchased and all of the vm's are being moved to it using storage vmotion. He just wants to better understand SANs and ESX. Can anyone point me to any information I can give him? Thanks Matt
