I want to use the VCS to VCVA converter to migrate my vCenter 5.5 U3 off windows to the linux appliance. I have checked all of the requirements and my environment is ok except for SSO. I am running 2 vCenter servers, one test and one production. They are both connected to the same SSO instance running on a separate server. The converter requires that SSO be running on the same server as vCenter. I would like to try this on my test vCenter to document the steps before moving production, but I'm not entirely sure of the sequence of the steps. There is so much disparate information out there on the subject. So has anyone done this before? I am thinking I have to: Install SSO on my test vCenter server. Un-Register my test vCenter server from the old standalone SSO and re-register it to the new SSO just installed. Then at this point I have my test environment in the correct configuration for using the fling to migrate it to linux appliance and once done I could do the same on production vCenter. These steps sound simple enough but I'm not sure how to go about them. Would I have to unregister test vCenter from old SSO first? My thinking is that I'm going to run into problems when I try to install SSO when vCenter is already registered. Will I have to bring vCenter down before doing this? All of these servers are virtual machines running on my production vCenter server by the way, and all are at 5.5 U3. Any clarification and or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I need to audit whenever a console is opened on any virtual machine running within a certain cluster. The cluster has 3 hosts. The information is readily available through the GUI in the "events" tab, but I need to be able to find it in either a vcenter log, or an ESXi host log that I can send to a centralized logger. In the ESXi hostd.log, I see the console connection to the virtual machine, but the userid is always vpxuser: Ticket issued for mks service to user: vpxuser In the vmauthd.log I can also see the connection, but the user name is not included: Local connection for mks established.   In the host vpxa.log and in the vCenter server vpxd.log I see vim.VirtualMachine.acquireTicket but nowhere can I find the userid as it is shown in the client GUI (both the fat client and the web client) where it shows the connection and the user. I've searched all the host level logs, and the vCenter logs, but can't seem to find it. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks very much,

Yes that's it. The request entries stay out there even after a machine is destroyed - I assume for auditing purposes, but I would like to be able to clean them up, especially after all the testing I have been doing. There is a delete button but it doesn't seem to be available (grayed out).
Has anybody found an answer to this? I just did a lot of testing and would like to clean up the successful requests by deleting them. The delete button is grayed out however.

I am trying to set up vcac 6.2 for the first time. Without going into all the detail of how I got here,I am finally at the point where I can try and test out my setup. I request a machine through the catalog, and the machine is named according to my machine prefixes, it is assigned an IP out of my network profile - everything looks like it should from within vcac and even in vCenter. But when the vm is deployed and built in vCenter, I open the console and log onto it, the hostname is that of my template, not the machine name assigned to it. The network information is also that of my template, and not the IP assigned to it by vcac. If I look at it in vcac under item details, it's listed the way I want; the properties are just not actually getting assigned to the vm. I've set up all of the pertinent custom properties in the blueprint; Does that make any sense? What is the huge piece of this that I am missing? Any nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'm trying to upload an ISO from my desktop to a catalog, the transfer seems to go fine; I can see the file size increase within the transfer directory; I then get a message saying the transfer was successful in the uploads progress window. But the media file is then marked as in error under the media tab. Details show Operation as: Finalized upload of media file, status: error Details: internal server error. And from here the only option I have is to delete it. The logs on the cell server show everything looking ok until about an hour after the transfer is done, and it says: TransferSessionCleanerJob      | Unexpected error setting quarantine expiration for transfer session Has anyone else seen this? Thanks,
Thank you for that "smart help guide". That showed me what the problem was. The virtual machine was outside of the "discovered virtual machines" folder.

I am trying to create an OVF from a vm in vsphere - I'm running ovftool on a linux machine, and using the following syntax (I got this from the ovftool users guide): ovftool username@myvcenter.aaa.com/"datacenter name"/vm/vmname /local/path/tostoreit/vnname.ovf It prompts for a password, I enter the password, and it comes back with: Opening VI source: vi://username@myvcenter.aaa.com/datacenter name/vmname Error: Locator does not refer to an object:vi://username@myvcenter.aaa.com/datacenter name/vmname Incidentally, I get the exact same error when I try using the mac version of ovftool, and the windows version. Please help - I know this should work. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I have to get this working pretty fast. Thank you!!

Is there documentation available for converting to oracle while maintaining our data? I have been unable to find any. Thank you!

Can't even ping the gateway. Tried restarting the network, no help. Reboot, no help. I uninstall tools and the network works fine. Anybody got any ideas?
That's just what I was looking for. Thanks!
I don't know. That's what I'm trying to find out.

I am looking for a command I could run on a linux guest machine to query what version of vmware tools is installed on that machine. I'm ultimately looking to automate the tools upgrade - hoping to find a silent tools install for linux, but initially I just need to query the currently installed version (outside of virtual center). ESX version is 3.5.

When attempting to vmotion a 512M virtual machine onto a server that has 4.1G available memory, I'm getting an error saying "Insufficient Memory Resources". This particular host is running ESX 2.5.4. I checked the MUI to see what it thought incase VC was improperly reporting the memory, but it shows the same thing. 4.1G free. I'm having the same problem on other servers as well. Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be going on? Thank you.

Hi there, When upgrading a vm from RHEL4 update4 to RHEL4 update5 I'm getting a kernel panic at boot time: can't find the root disk (changing from BusLogic to LSI Logic. This machine just migrated from an ESX 2.5.4 host to ESX 3.0.2). If I install a new vm on ESX 3.0.2 I don't have this problem. Any ideas?

When I upgraded, I vmotioned VM's off my 2.5.4 host to my 3.0.2 host, and at the same time I was given the option to relocate the disk files to a VMFS3 datastore. I'm in a situation now where I need to move some VM's around within 3.0.2 - but since I'm not upgrading I am not given the option to move the files to another datastore. Is there a way to do this when you're not upgrading? This would come in very handy.
I just rescanned for everything at the same time. The LUN #'s are different between the 2 servers. It was always like that in ESX 2, and I never had a problem. Is this something different?

Hi, I created 4 new VMFS - 3 volumes on an ESX3 server. I just upgraded another server in the datacenter to ESX3 from ESX2.5.4. That went fine. Now I'm trying to share the volumes I created on the first server to the newly upgraded one. I did a rescan, but I can only see the raw LUNs, not the volumes. They've got virtual machines on them running on the first server, and my intent was to share the volumes on the second server so I could vmotion a few over to the second server. I can see the LUNs however. Has anybody run into this? I tried doing a vmkfstools -V to discover any new volumes but that didn't help. I can provide more details if necessary - I was hoping somebody would know right off what the problem is. Thanks.
