Good morning, all! Just a quick check. I need to move one of my 6.5 VCSA machines to a new cluster, made up of older hosts than the current host. Live vMotion won't work, so I need to shut down the appliance, go to one of the hosts in the new cluster, browse to the datastore and folder with the VCSA, and start the VCSA from there. Yes? Thanks! Good morning, all! I'm looking for recommendations for an open source KMS server that has a history of working with VMware per-VM encryption. I originally designed the project with HyTrust's limited KMS server that was going to be free. It's not any longer, and the pricing on KMS servers ranges between a few and several body parts. I did find that, according to VMware, any KMS server that's KMIP 1.1 compliant or better should work. Any thoughts on searching for this open source grail? Thanks! Gregg

Good afternoon, all! While on a short holiday, a colleague updated a VM from 14.04 to 16.04.  Problem is, the network interface is now gone - only from ifconfig. The VM settings show the original E1000 NIC and the /etc/network/interfaces is still there, pointing to eth0. I seem to remember a network issue cloning a Linux VM, but nothing on the upgrade. Anyone run into a similar issue? Thanks! Gregg

Good morning, all! I'm extending our network monitoring to include our ESXi 5.5 hosts.  Using Nagios and SNMP, one of the objects I want to monitor, or at least find out where, is the NTP connection. If the host loses contact with the NTP provider, is there a parameter in one of the MIBs to check NTP connections? Thanks! Gregg

Good afternoon, all! I'm looking into configuring vDS instances in my datacenters.  However, I'm a little unclear on what, precisely, a "datacenter" constitutes in this context.  Here's the outline: I have two physical locations separated by about 30 minutes and connected by an MPLS circuit.  Hosts, networks and VMs are managed by a single vCenter in my main datacenter.  The remote DC networks have different subnets, with Cisco routers on the two MPLS ends. There is no appreciable difference in the VMs running in the two locations; that is, there are mail servers, database servers and so on running on both sides.  Other than the different subnets, it's pretty much a duplicate of the main DC. In this scenario, would a single vDS be workable, or would I need to install a second vCenter server, move the hosts to the new center and define separate vDS instances for each physical location? This may be an easy answer, but I haven't found it yet.......need to work on my Google-fu.... Thanks to all for looking! Gregg

Good morning, all! I have some new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS VMs that are running sendmail.  They're provisioned with only 1 vCPU. If I increase the vCPUs, is there any tuning within the VM necessary, or will Ubuntu look at the new cores and say "Cool! I'm using all these CPUs!" Thanks for looking! Gregg

Good morning, all! We're looking at VDP 4 and/or 6.1 to add to one of our VMware stacks.  This is a new stack, currently running vSphere 5.5.  Our legacy production stack is running Veeam Backup and Replication to handle those chores.  One of the things we needed to do was to implement bandwidth throttling in Veeam so we would not soak the MPLS connection between our two datacenters.  Does VDP have the ability to throttle bandwidth consumption by itself, or would I have to accomplish this with firewall/switch/router throttling? Thanks! Gregg

Good morning, all! We're looking to simplify our lives by using a configuration management package that can also handle patching Windows and Linux in the physical and virtual environments.  This will need to be open, free editions and manage between 150 - 200 devices to start.  These would be primarily Linux and Windows servers, with possible config management of my Cisco and HP network devices. Without starting flamewars, I'd be grateful for recommendations, warnings, sob stories, glittering triumphs.....whatever can give me a good idea of which way to move on this. Thanks to all for looking! Gregg

Good morning, all! I'm working on upgrading the vSphere 4.1 currently running on my C210 rackmount servers to vSphere 5.5.  I found a document that showed that the server would work with vSphere 5.5 with the 1.4.3u software container.  However, when I rechecked my steps, the current interop matrix shows only vSphere 5.0 and 5.0U1 listed.  In my experience there's rarely been a retraction of compatibility on any OS interoperability. Has anyone had good/bad experiences running vSphere 5.5 on these C210 servers they would share?  These will help us work out likely scenarios and traps to avoid in our rollout. Thanks to all for looking! G

Hello, all! My management has a question on the way thick provisioned or thin provisioned machines are depicted on the Virtual Machines tab in the Datastores view in the C# client. The two columns involved are the Provisioned Space and the Used Space.  He would like to know why the fields are filled as "xxx GB of xxx GB" and not simply "xxx GB" as in the VM settings. Also, there seems to be some discrepancy in the way thick provisioned disks are listed.  We have some thick provisioned VMs with the Provisioned Space matching the Used Space, as expected - and a few where the Provisioned Space is double the VM Settings space. Management wants to know how the Provisioned Space and Used Space are related. I'm also looking into where a similar view is in the Web Client to contrast this and help Management understand why this is so. Thanks for looking! Gregg

A quick follow-up to this as well:  when I start the vSphere client for my legacy 4.1 stack (we're migrating to 5.5 over the next month) I can use the tick box "Use Windows session credentials."  This points to the same A/D domain as the standalone hosts belong to.  Logging in to these standalone hosts - I need to manually enter usernames and password to log in.  Since they're pointing to the same authentication source, I'm baffled as to why this difference in behaviour. Thanks!

Hello, all! I ran into a new (for me) situation this morning.  When I tried to access two standalone ESXi 5.5 hosts last night I could not access them via vSphere client or by SSH.  Ping also did not respond. When I got in this morning, I found they also did not recognize Active Directory credentials.  The VMs, however, were unaffected. After rebooting both hosts the problems went away and access was returned to normal. My question is: What would account for such an eventuality?  No changes were made to the network that I have any knowledge of, and I'm the guy who makes those changes. If anyone has run across this or similar issues and has found any clues about what caused it, I'd be thankful for pointers. Thanks to all for looking! Gregg

Found it! This posting had the clue - I SSH'd over to the host in question and restarted services - and I could see the domain and the group!  I added them as Administrators and it worked! One caveat - the client did not like the "Use my Windows Credentials" check box - that generated the "Cannot log in......" error.  But logging in by hand seems to work - don't know why that would be, but....... http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.htmlGood afternoon, all! I'm working on joining my ESXi hosts to Active Directory and using Windows credentials to log in.  However, I've run into a snag that I haven't found a solution for. I used this document as my guide for setting up the ESXi host and put a new group in ADUC called ESXiAdmins (tried with and without spaces) with the appropriate people in the group. When I try to log in to the host using my Windows credentials, I get the message "Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password."  I've checked with other users in the ESXiAdmins group and they have a similar problem. I've checked both sides and, AFAIK I haven't missed a step. My production stack is running a vCenter server and Active Directory - that works fine. One difference - I haven't gotten the unknown certificate dialog on my workstation; my coworker has - but he got the same login error as I did. I downloaded the client logs and it appears that there's a SOAP error inside - ????? Thanks to all for looking! Gregg Message was edited by: Gregg Hughes I also followed this document (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.html) and found that when I went to add permissions the Domain drop-down list didn't include the Active Directory domain. Hmmmm.

Good morning, all! This is probably an easy questions, but I haven't found the definitive answer yet. :smileyconfused: I have a stack of test machines on the free ESXi 5.5 server.  The settings for the virtual disks are (mostly) thick provisioned eager zeroed.  I would expect that the Provisioned Space / Used Space tabs in vSphere Client would show identical figures for each machine so configured.  That's not the case. On one machine it shows correctly. On one thin provisioned machine, the VM settings show the provisioned size of 12G, but the Provisioned Space tab shows 8.6G.  On one thick eager disk, the VM settings shows 8G provisioned but the Provisioned Space shows 16G. I've refreshed the datastore (which is local storage) and it now shows the correct free space on the host. Where is this going off the rails?  I want to be able to accurately show disk usages for the dev team and help them get and keep their needed resources. Thanks for looking! Gregg

Greetings all! The next phase of our migration to a newer vSphere is imminent.  One of the tasks is to join the Windows server (2008 R2) to an Active Directory domain.  It should be a simple as joining the domain, rebooting, and logging in as the local user to re-assign permissions.  However, I'm sure there's something I'm missing. If anyone has run afoul of complications in this area, I'd be very grateful for any warnings you might have. Thanks! Gregg

Update on how it all went down....... The only VMware action we had to take was to disable host monitoring for the remote cluster.  vCenter yelled at us when it couldn't see the hosts, but otherwise took everything in stride.  When the network came back online vCenter found the hosts with no intervention required. Hello, all! We are planning a network upgrade that will put our remote datacenter in the dark for about an hour.  We have two vSphere 4.1 hosts and attendant storage that are HA configured and monitored by the vCenter server in our main datacenter. We're going to disable host monitoring in the remote cluster.  Is there anything else we should check on to avoid unnecessary alarms or system panics? Thanks to all for suggestions on this! Gregg
