I tried to migrate a VM with RDMs to a new host and get errors like "Disk 8 not found, disk 10 not found, etc".  These are Cisco UCS blades using the same profiles.  The storage on the back end seems to be zoned correctly.  If I look on the storage adapter of both hosts, they seem to show the same devices. I'm not sure if what shows up as devices on the HBA include the RDMs or, are they just the regular VMFS volumes?  Is there a way to tell? From the command line on a host, is there a way to display the RDMs that are zoned to that host?  I know I can see them on the source host but, is there a way to see them on the destiation host before doing a Vmotion?
This ended up being a broken Windows patch that was released with the May 2018 updates.  It was fixed with the June 2018 updates.

I currently have 32 ESXi 6 hosts in 3 different clusters that boot from SAN.  We're making changes to our storage environment and rather than doing LUN migrations on the back end, I'd rather just boot from SD card.  I can reinstall ESX, that's not a big deal.  it's the virtual distributed switch that is killing me.  Is there an easy way to export the config (Including VDS port mappings) before I rebuild and import the config after I rebuild.  The KB article that explains how to do it specifically says it's for standard switches.

We're having an issue in our DR environment connecting to virtual center (v6 VCSA).  The DR site is on its own network, with its own VC and domain controllers.  From the corporate office, we can get to VC with the fat client just fine.  Once we cut the link to the DR site and start working from there, the fat client times out but, the web client goes right in.  If we login with administrator@vsphere.local, it works fine so, I'm thinking this has something to do with authentication. What is different with authentication between the thick client and the web client? When we do a packet capture, we see the thick client going to several different DC's where the web client doesn't.  What controls this?  The utility VM we use at the DR site only points to the DC that is at that site.  Same thing for VC. If we change the timeout on the thick client to 300ms, it works.  Why doesn't the web client need such a high timeout value?

We have a huge SQL VM that we run by itself on a host.  No other VMs running on it.  The host has 1 TB of RAM.  The VM has 512 GB of RAM.  Someone posed this question to me "Would there be any benefit of reserving all 512 GB on the VM?".  There is no intention of ever running any other VMs on this host. We're not planning on increasing the RAM of the VM. One downside I see is that if this VM has to fail over to a host that does have other VMs running on it. Is there any upside to doing this? What are your thoughts?

How can I manage multiple Virtual Centers from one interface without Linked Mode?  Like back in the Virtual Center Administrator Portal days?  We seem to have a Virtual Center Sprawl issue. Horizon View? ....... you need a separate VC.  VxRail? ...... another VC.  Vblock? ...... another VC.  Our DR site? .... another VC.   With VxRail and Vblock, they won't even let us use Linked Mode or a shared PSC or anything like that. I was wondering if there's some over-arching web interface that could manage them all.  Even a third party solution. When a tech needs to do something with a VM through VC, they've got to guess which VC they need to connect to.  It's kind of a pain. Just basic functionality really.  Reboot VM, get a console, etc.  I don't need to patch hosts or do snapshots.

No I didn't but, I'll try that.  Thanks.

I have an environment with 2 VMs on a single host. A DB server and an app server. We had memory reservations set on the VMs.  It was 255GB on the app server and 50GB on the DB server.  I'm not sure where those numbers came from.  The host itself has 512GB.  We had an issue where we saw ballooning on the DB server so, VMware recommended getting rid of the reservations.  I went into VC and removed the reservations on both VMs but the ballooning didn't stop. While VC shows no reservation on these VMs, if I connect directly to the host, it still shows a reservation and won't let me get rid of it. Any ideas?

"I have the same problem but as i said to my boss i can create the dashboards and reports but it is up to him to decide on the threshold that is going to be used to trigger the purchase"  That's it EXACTLY. He needs to decide if he wants to buy additional capacity when we're at 50% remaining capacity or 10%.  I suppose I could decide that and have an indicator turn red when it's time to buy.... maybe at 20% remaining.

Is there a good tutorial or document out there that can show me how to create a cluster capacity report for specific clusters? I want to create a report that shows "Cluster A" remaining VMs by CPU, Remaining VMs by memory going out 30 days, 90 days, and 180 days.  Then, the same thing with "Cluster B" and "Cluster C" all on the same report.  I think I have the 30, 90, and 180 days worked out but, how do I get more than one cluster on the report?  Do I setup a custom View, group, or application?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but, here goes. What are people's thoughts on testing support? We just got a new converged infrastructure with a new support model.  We have a single phone number to call for any of our issues.  If it really is a single phone call, that would be great.  My issue is that I'm not sure I want to wait until we have a critical situation to find out ... "Oh wait, you have to get Microsoft on the phone yourself because this might be their issue".   I don't have an expectation that all of our issues can be resolved with a single call B=but, I can dream can't I? Should I test it or, is this morally wrong? The system isn't in production yet.  What could I break so that it may not be obvious if the issue is hardware, hypervisor, or OS?

So far, this is happening on 2 different Windows 2008 R2 servers on different hosts in different v5.5 clusters. I can reboot these VMs all day and they always come back up on the network with no issues. If I apply a Microsoft update (even one that doesn't require a reboot) and reboot, it comes up disconnected from the network. When checking the NIC settings, everything looks normal. No missing IP addresses, no missing gateways. I can't ping out from the VM either. If I go into the OS and disable then re-enable the NIC, it comes back online. If I clone the VM, the problem goes with the VM. Here's what I've tried: Upgraded VMware tools Upgraded VM hardware version Deleted VMXNET 3 Nic and re-added it Switched to the e1000 Nic Moved the VM to a new host (v6.0) Rebooted the host Beating the VM with a hammer It's getting to be a pain because, with every monthly Microsoft patching, we have 2 VMs that we have to manually disable and re-enable the NIC. Any thoughts?

First, I'm very new to PowerCLI. I've read all the Get-Esxtop blogs (Yellow bricks, hitchhikers guide, etc).  They seem way above my head. I'm trying to get the same output I would get through the regular esxtop in batch mode on a single host but, through PowerCLI: esxtop -b -d 2 -n 900 > /vmfs/volumes/vol1/esxtopcapture.csv This is a lot more involved than it would seem isn't it?  I just want to dump all the counters to a file. We have an application running on 2 VMs on a dedicated host.  This application sometimes slows down to a crawl. I want something that our Helpdesk can just click on to get esxtop in batch mode to run.  Is there another way to do it other than PowerCLI?
