This is sort of difficult to explain but I will try my best.  I have just resolved an issue related to VM connectivity with the network boys.  I supplied them with the physical Mac associated with VMNIC1 "00:18:FE:33:A4:47" I told them it was patched into port eight.  When they logged onto their switch they couldn't see it at all, eventually however when they tagged the port with VLAN 208 which happens to be one of the configured VM port groups with a VM on it they were suddenly able to see the Mac from the VM that routes via VMNIC1 "00:18:FE:33:A4:47". For future reference so I can learn and better understand things going forward can anyone clarify how this works.  Does ESX hide/mask the physical Mac in favor of the Macs from VM's on this occasion it was an old ESX3.5 host but I assume 5.5 would have done the same?

Management have asked me to provide kWh energy usage for a select number of VM in our environment.  They are spread across 100 hosts made by different hardware vendors is this viable, anyone know how I can go about doing this or should I tell them its a no go?  I have Foglight in place within our environment however I haven't seen this feature in the web interface.
You have actually give me two brilliant solution mate which I will be sure to remember.  Unfortunately however as luck would have it I have a 5.1 environment and no vDS :smileycry:

A little background on this one I have to introduce two new hosts into a 6 node cluster.  Unfortunately there are no vDS but that’s a different matter. I have been assured by the networking guys that all the VLAN presentation is consistent across the entire chassis containing all blades.  However I can’t rely on this information due to past events. I know I can ping out of specific adapters using the syntax below… vmkping –I vmk1 192.168.1.254 However how could I ping specific VLANS on specific gateways to be assured connectivity exists?  What would be the syntax for the command would someone kindly provide a example

Would some kind soul help me out with a script that can export the associated VLANs Networks and storage utilization for a select inputted lists of VM's.  I am frequently being asked move a bunch of VM's from one cluster to another and as part of my sanity checks at the destination cluster I need to log a call with networking to confirm all the VLAN's are present.  In addition I also need to log a call with storage to check the space is available. This whole process takes me a hell of a lot of time/effort to manually document the details for each VM.  I just wondered if someone had already created a script for a piece of work like this?  I typically manually come up with something of this nature (see attached).

I Need to urgently export a list of all VM's and their respective Datastore's including LUNS ideally.  Would some kind soul show me a script I can use in PowerGUI.  I may have missed it but I cant find anything that fulfills the requirement.  I have the community PowerPack set and cant seem to find it unless I am blind. Unfortunately scripting is not my strong point but I hope to address that.

Can anyone tell me where/how to get hold of ESXi 5.5 and associated vCenter etc.  I want to take a look in my lab environment, my understanding it that it is virtually RTM now but correct me if I am wrong, I have looked at torrents the lot. I have seen reviews and screenshots etc I just want to take a look and do some initial testing for work really.

To be more specific I am referring to the Anti Virus component.  Which we are hoping will save money and improve performance.

Has that worked for you in the past mate?  I assume you mean uninstall the web server component and re-install on the Windows vCenter server.

Hi all, I just installed vCenter in a test environment and irritatingly I can't console onto the VM's using the vSphere web interface.  I get the attached message, strange thing is that I could have sworn that I was able to do it from my home desktop PC (currently trying my work laptop) Any idea's how I can get onto VM's wherever I am browser compatibility permitting of course. So far I haven't had much joy using IE10 but I get much further with Chrome and I am sure it worked with Chrome at home. I have a feeling I could work around this error if only I could un-tick the silly little box in my screenshot.  unfortunately however its grayed out completely, is anyone able to help?

Firstly apologies is this is a silly question I am a relatively newbie VMware user only just finished the "VMware vSphere, Install, Configure, Manage course and my exam is a couple of months away. Within our environment we are unable to perform a hot-migrations from a cluster comprised of HP ProLiant BL 460c G1's to a cluster comprised of Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5670 @ 2.93GHz.  We get the error...  The virtual machine requires hardware features that unsupported or disabled on the target host: * SSE4.2 Presumably this is because the family type is different but it would be nice to be able to provide definitive proof of this for the indeviduel attempting the hot migration.  So my question is does a tool/spread sheet/web tool exist for people planning to purchase new hosts or for those wanting greater detail on how to force compatibility using the CPUID Mask feature? p.s I did warn you this could potentially be a total newb question
