Here are a few things to try.  Restart the vcenter service, login into ESXI and power on the vm.  That last one did it for me when I got this error.  Here is a post on this I found when I was troubleshooting, VMware: The operation is not allowed in the current connection state of the host | VMpros.  Also if you are running DRS make sure that none of the hosts are in maintenance mode.  This was another thing I found out when I was turning on and off of nobs to test and learn.

For vMotion to work the vm's have to be within the same datacenter.  If they are not, you have to do a cold migration.  Some requirements to check: Ensure the VM is not connected to a CD-Rom or Floppy Drive Cannot be clustered with another vm Both ESXi servers must use same share storage Both ESXi must be connected via gig or better The two servers must have compatible cpus access to same physical network These are some of the requirements.  To understand them all include vmotion storage, check out the 5.x Admin guide.  Take a look at virtual machine management/migration and migration with vmotion.  By reviewing these, you will be able to see what the issue is.  Here is the URL to the guide, VMware vSphere 5.1.

Thanks for the post Mustafa.  I did install the same router and it worked.  My limitation was how much of a router workstation is and did not know if I was doing something wrong or missing something.  But basic routing knowledge told me I needed a router.  Things are progressing with the lab and thanks for you and everyone's assistance.

I have reconfigured my lab.  I have attached the topology.  The vm network is nat'd and is able to reach outside network.  However, I cannot reach the DC and believe I need to add a virtual router in order to traverse different networks.  My next step is to add the host again within ESXi-host1 and configure it for vCenter and I will need to be able to route to the DC which is on a separate network.  However, watching VirtualizedGeek video, it did not appear that he had a virtual router.  Thoughts!!!

I was not aware of the hub aspect with workstation.  I am in the process right now rebuilding the lab and will have it done in a few hours.  I am switching it so that the vm's within ESXi are nat'd which should allow them access to the public network.  Only time that I will add additional vmnic will be for fault tolerance testing.  Thanks for your help everyone so far.
I will try it with nat and see how it goes.  I will also look at the url that you provided above.

Workstation is setup as vmnet0 bridged, vmnet3 custom host only, vment4 custom host only.  Vmnet3 is management, vmnet4 is storage.  Yes vmnic0+1 are connected to vmnet3 in workstation. vmnic2+3 are connected via vmnet4 for storage. The vm's in workstation dc and vcenter all have vmnet3 and vmnet0.  The vcenter has vmnet4 using Microsoft ISCSI target.  I hope that helps!!!

I am using a standalone desktop with 16 gig memory with windows 7 and installed workstation 9.  I have created my based configuration, DC, ESXi-host1, ESXI-host2, ESXI-host3 and ESXI-host4.  I have also installed vcenter as a vm within workstation and I can access all of the hosts and vm's (DC,vcenter) by name and ip.  I can also from the DC and vcenter connect to the internet using vnet0 (workstation).  My management is vnet3 and my storage is vnet4.  I created a new vm called vcenter within ESXi-host1.  I then installed vcenter server and vsphere client.  That all works fine.  I went to install web client and for the adobe flash player it needs internet access.  For switch 0 I have vmnic0 active and vmnic1 standby.  The VM port group  has vm network which has vcenter vm and vmkernel port with management network.  I went into properties and accept promiscuous mode for both vswitch and vm network.  I still cannot access the internet.  This is where I do not know what next to do.  Suggestions?  If you need more data, let me know and I will provide it to you.

I was going to post this in vSphere community but I could not start a discussion so I am placing it here and I am sure the moderators will move to the appropriate community. I have added the iSCSI software adapter, added the storage adapter, etc.  I then went to delete it and I could not.  The only thing I could do was disable it.  I then reset the host and later realized after the reset, the storage adapter is now gone.  Is this the only way to remove the adapter is by a restart of the host?  Did I do something wrong?  Is this a bug? Thanks, Tim
Thanks for the URL.....
Thank you for the information Marcelo!!
I have found database sizing for 4.x but I have not found one for 5x.  Is there one and if there is, can you point me to its location?
Thank you for the clarification AakashJ!!!!
I understand that part and thanks for your response.  My question is: Is there anything different done when using the wizard versus going into database, sso and starting the service?

When you are deploying vca and connect via web browser and the installation starts, you get to the static IP and dns information.  It says to perform those tasks and then relaunch the wizard to complete the installation.  Is there any reason why I cannot go into each area, database, network, sso, active directory and configure them there instead of relaunching the wizard?  To me the wizard may save you a couple of seconds but nothing significant.  I have not found any documents that talk towards this.

Andreas,  Thanks for your post.  I have gone to control pannel and it is not there.  I have double-clicked the VMware Tools icon in the system tray, and it only brings up About VMware Tools and it does state that The VMware Tools Service is running.  However, I never am able to get to the VMware tools to open.  I did a repair and remove and re-installed to same results.  Any suggetions? Thanks, Tim

Thanks, Tim
