Well there are some options that you could try:   - Use a VNC like application which should allow DX and OpenGL   - Passthrough a USB controller and and manage it locally (ie hook up a keyboard , mouse, monitor) Keep in mind that VNC will work, but if you are not on a good connection it will be laggy, crappy looking, and/or low frame rate Personally I passthrough the USB controller (actually both of my USB 3.0 ones) and manage ESXi from a VM inside it, been working well for me
I have a 7970 in passthrough and it works wonderfully (I use 5.0)
With my Logitech G35 (USB headset) I notice USB packets being dropped (lost/clippy sound) when the VM is using most of its cpu allocation Might be something to check out as well
i haven't checked to see if it actually works (as I use a USB headet for everything), but passing in the HDMI sound card on my 7970 does not show any errors

Using a guide to get blu-rays to work with VLC (might not be legal, google search: "Play Blu-Ray with VLC in Windows", second link) I was able to get good playback (ie no missing frames) I will double check this tonight when I get home from work, but I know it was working without any noticeable skipping.  When I tried to get AnyDVDHD to overcome the protection I got the same problem. As for the sound skipping, I get the same thing over USB headphones (the entire controller is being passed through). I will try the cpu reservation and see if that helps at all.
I use a 7970 and it works just fine tbh, I pass it to a Windows 7 VM at this point (along with my USB 3.0 controllers)

I run ESXi 5.0 from my setup: AMD FX-8120 Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Visiontek HD7970 So I have a feeling you will be fine with your setup

Well, I know it isn't just VMware that is having issues with passing through NVIdia cards, this also is a problem on XEN as well (alst I checked) and involved setting the vBAR=pBAR as well as giving the VM access to the original BIOS (one before booting) of the video card as the BIOS gets changed in some way after booting that it does not allow it to be used in passthrough Keep in mind a lot of these issues stem from a year or so ago when I first started looking into the issue with GPU passthrough

I am using AnyDVD HD which is commercial software that allows me to play blu-rays in VLC and the drive is connected to the motherboard SATA connector, this works just fine when it is just windows 7 installed natively
I'll try that and see if it works, though for a permanent solution it will have to wait until I get a cheap card

I am using the secondary PCI Express slot, the GeForce 210 is in the primary slot as I would prefer to still have a console when I need it Also, the 2 USB 3.0 controllers (4 ports total) as also given to the Windows Gaming VM as that makes it easy to have USB input to the VM My only pet peev right now is that I have a blu-ray player, however, ESXi seems to be limiting the speed in which the VM can read the data from the drive to a speed that makes it impossible to actually watch the movie without first using software to sip it from disk (AnyDVD HD to be exact)

So I have had my ESXi 5.0 install running for about a month or so with VMDirectPath passing through my GPU. The build has worked for both the 4970 1GB from the previous desktop and also works with the 7970 that I know have Though you cannot install the AMD Vision Center, results in the VM not being able to load again Hardware: AMD FX-8120 Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 32GB (4x8GB) G.Skill Ares DDR3-1333 CL9 Intel EXPI9301CTBLK EVGA GeForce 210 Adaptec 1430SA (FreeNAS) VisionTek Reference 7970 (Windows) Corsair AX850 OCZ Vertex LE 50GB 2 x WD Cavier Blue 4 x 500GB (Adaptec 1430SA) VMs: FreeNAS - Testing iSCSI + ZFS Ubuntu 12.04 - Software Development Windows 7 - Gaming and ESXi Management Windows 7 - Testing
