Hi All, looking at the VMware Compatibility for IO Devices VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Search its never clear what Firmware and Driver to use when aligned to a HPE Host for example. So example is the 562SFP Adapter VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Search  . On the guide it details that for 6.5 update1 5 combinations are available with 5 different drivers. So i then look on the HPE hosts iLO and there is no trace of this "Firmware" listed on the HCL of 6.01, 5.04, 5.05 etc. All that is listed is 1.1606.01 etc. It seems on the Network adapters VMware detail firmware however the adapters have a ROM version and OROM etc which i believe is what is listed in iLO. This link can be clicked on but i still dont find its conclusive in the exact firmware and driver alignment when compared to the iLO readings: VMware Knowledge Base The Driver for the Adapters is easy as can locate the exact driver and version on esxcli then apply new one via that or VUM, so seems the problem is trying to work out what firmware, ROM, etc aligns to each driver. Any thoughts?

Ping with 1000 packets to analyze the average latency. I had the same issue and was related NIOC settings as had VSAN on a dedicated VDS with VSAN traffic set as 100 Shares with all others not in use and high latency on 9000 ping was seen. Amended share value for management to 25% on that switch and all was then ok.

Hi, As the hosts are affected, you could revert to the previous build.I have also done this and it worked fine, however this was reverted before i upgraded the On Disk format version to 5.0. Reverting an ESXi host is only valid if the host was updated using these methods: VIB installation or removal Profile installation or removal ESXi host update using VMware Update Manager Updated from a ISO In the console screen of the ESXi host, press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to see the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) screen. Press F12 to view the shutdown options for the ESXi host. Press F11 to reboot. When the Hypervisor progress bar starts loading, press Shift+R. You will see the warning: Current hypervisor will permanently be replaced with build: X.X.X-XXXXXX. Are you sure? [y/n] Press Y to roll back the build. Press Enter to boot. With a default HA Configuration, including 2 x ESXI Hosts and 1 x virtual machine with the "Nostalgia" VM from the Market place (no vm tools installed) Would HA work with this VM? As i know HA monitors VM through Heatbeats via VM Tools, so if a VM does not have VM tools installed does this mean HA will fail for this VM? Whereby i would need to install a Windows/Linux O/S, then install VM Tools on that VM for HA to work? thanks
well ping is disabled on my watchguard firewall. So if ping is disabled and ping requests from ESXI hosts are denied, does that mean HA Will fail?

Hi All, I have configured a HA cluster with 2 esxi hosts in vcentre 5. I enabled just HA On the cluster and all was fine. However, since enabling, our network has been slow and our watchguard firewall has been denying pings constantly from both hosts!! So both hosts are constantly trying to ping the default gateway on our network, but Ping is disabled so its been getting denied. I turned off HA on the cluster  and pinging stopped and network was  fast again!! Any ideas why HA is doing this? is it related to the Heartbeat feature? Cheers
OK well i have enabled HA and added my 2 hosts so there is failover. Is there a tester for HA to see if its configured correctly or whats the best way to test HA?

Ok thanks for response. So am I correct to say that HA also mirrors other hosts in the cluster so if one vm has BSOD on one esxi host then it's the same on all hosts in HA cluster? So main benefit of HA is providing fail over for physical esxi hosts? DRS only works with HA is that right? Or does it work with FT aswell? Sent from my iPhone 4S

Hi Andre, I managed to resolve the issue i had earlier, so this is ok now, but i think ijust need some clarification on these solutions. Firstly, Is FT required for HA or are they 2 individual failover solutions? Is HA Required for FT? I have now disabled FT on my two VM's. As i understand it FT creates another shadow VM for every VM Where FT is enabled. The shadow VM is create on another ESXI host so if VM fails, the other VM starts, so FT is a solution for VM failures? And HA is a solution for ESXI Servers Failover and any VMs that are running on them? Thanks...

Hi All, I have a vmware network setup and am looking to setup HA So i can shut one server down and all VM's will failover to other Host. So i have vcentre server installed with: 2 x ESXI Hosts, 1 x iScsi datastore. 1 x datacentre 1 x cluster Adapters with Vmotion and fault logging enabled. 2 X Virtual machines. I have enabled HA on the datacentre and then also right clicked each VM and enabled FT. However when i now attempt to start the VM's i recieve this error: Any idea whats gone wrong? Have i missed seting something up?

Hi All, i have configured iscsi storage with openfiler, following this guide: http://www.techhead....with-vmware-esx This has setup fine and i can log onto device and manage openfiler etc, i  have followed all instructions as detailed and then logged into my  vcentre and have 2 ESXI hosts. I have clicked onto "storage adapters" and added an ISCSI Target then  enabled it and simply put the "openfiler" devices IP Address into the  "dynamic discovery" tab. so it reades: 10.10.20.19:3260 However the LUNS created as detailed in the guide do not show, nothing shows! I rescanned the adapters and restarted the host however still nothing, any ideas whats wrong? I also added the management network to the adapter however it says path not used. cheers,

hi all, i now have a pc with 2 x 160GB Hard Drives in that i amd using for my SAN by configuring with openfiler. I installed open filer from the CD version 2.3 and this installed fine. So i setup openfiler on the first drive and used the second drive for my ISCSI Voulme. All was configured and followed the openfiler guide. I could ofcourse also manage the openfiler pc from a web browser with IP Address. However i restarted the openfiler pc and then i see this screen on the console and cannot connect to it from a web browser now. I reinstalled openfiler and configured the same way however hit the same problem. Anyone know what could be wrong???? I have obviously checked the LAN Cable etc
ok so i could turn off the openfiler host, add the new disk and then power back on and it will automatically register in the webadmin page? thanks
Hi All, When installing openfiler can the host have just 1 physical hard drive?

Hi All, I am setting up my vmware network and want to know the best way to configure storage so i can utilize the VMFS Datastore file system. I do have a HP Storage server with 9 disks installed. But not sure what i need to install on this server to configure the IP Address, etc? Also this server simply have 2 x GB Nics, will these be ok to connect to my vmware network? Would you think iscsi would be the best connection with the setup above? Please let me know if you have a better suggestion or what i have said is not quite right. Thanks,
Thanks for the response. I have now setup the 2 servers with ESXI installed on them. ESXI 1 = 10.10.20.1 (Static IP) GW: 10.10.0.254 ESXI 2 = 10.10.20.2 (Static IP) GW: 10.10.0.254 So i... See more...
Thanks for the response. I have now setup the 2 servers with ESXI installed on them. ESXI 1 = 10.10.20.1 (Static IP) GW: 10.10.0.254 ESXI 2 = 10.10.20.2 (Static IP) GW: 10.10.0.254 So i have connected to ESXI 1 via Vsphere client on my laptop. The task i then want to perform is installing Openfiler within a Virtual machine. So i created a VM on ESXI 1, and selected the Operating System as "other 64 bit", i then started the VM and captured an ISO image that was on a CD In the DVD Drive of the ESXI 1 Host This then launched Openfiler install and the options were available to install. But this is where i got stuck. I started the graphical install but when i got to the "enable network interface" eth0 is selected and i want to select to set a static ip address but not sure of the details of what to put here? IPV4 Address: ill set this to the same range as ESXI Hosts so 10.10.20.3 Gateway: 10.10.0.254 (Our routers GW) Nameserver - What should i put here?

Thanks for the response and the welcome. I have burn the iso for open filer to disk so when i boot the server from the disk is it fairly easy to set up as a SAN for VMWARE? Also with your idea: Install ESXI Directly onto the 2 physical servers Then presumably install vmware vsphere server onto another machine such as laptop to manage hosts and vm's etc? When you say to install the storage as a virtual machine onto one of the esxi servers, do you mean as in creating a virtual machine through vsphere server and then installing openfiler via iso and setting virtual machine up as a SAN? Thanks.
