Strange I can't even get it to install in the default path, C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure. It seems that the space in "Program Files" is the issue for me. Anyway, I will not spent more time on it as it can be documented and it does work now. Thought vmware could get this right though.
Having the same issue with path containing spaces for 5.5, did you ever find a solution? CHeers, M

New installation of vSphere 5.5a on a Windows 2008 x64 VM with all componenets (SSO, Web Client, Inventory and vCenter) Cannot get Web Client to work, unless I install it to a path with no spaces, ie E:\vmware\ I get the error: The requested resource is not available with a 404 webpage when trying to access https://serverFQDN:9443 I have seen article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2044953 but it makes me no wiser as it states C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\ If I stick with E:\subfolder\ it works fine Anyone found a way to install the Web Client to path contining spaces? Thanks for any input, M

Currently running vCenter 5.1 managing 100+ hosts and 1000+ guests in development, testing and production environments. Running all components on the same server (SSO, VUM, vCenter, Inventory and Web client) Need to go to 5.5 and my question is regarding the best approach and what is possible. As I understand vSphere Client 5.5 can connect to vCenter 5.1 and 5.5 so we could keep two vCenter servers in parallel. 1. Is it possible to install a vCenter 5.5 side-by-side with all new components such as SSO and inventory service and then migrate hosts, to finally shut down the 5.1 vCenter server? 2. Is it possible to migrate the vCenter DB’s to the new server to get all information over to the new 5.5 server? 3. Is the upgrade approach the only way forward, where the current vCenter server is upgraded and hosts can still stay on 5.1 until one by one is upgraded? This scenario does require the vSphere clients to be upgraded at the same time though as 5.1 clients cannot connect to 5.5. Thanks for any input in this matter. LMT

No CPU affinity is set for the for the VM,.There are 11 hosts in this cluster. The odd thing is that after this error regarding VMotion from and to the same host I see several successful VMotions. It's only when it's stupid enough to VMotion from and to itself that it fails. So I don't see why it sometimes picks itself as both source and destination.

heheh, I didn't mean it to come out so snappy, it's very early and not enough coffee. Sorry. Yes, the host are in the same datacentre.
Just as a late update, followed instructions in http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/vc-201-200702-patch.html and that has not seen this issue since.
Yes, I can VMotion and cold migrate but that is not my queastion. It is, why is DRS trying to move it from and to the same host?

In the "Tasks And Events" tab on several of our VM's I found the following message: Name: Migrate Virtal Machine Target: VM-1 Reason: Status: Operation timed out. 16/11/2007 1:52:16 AM, Failed to migrate VM-1 from HOST-1 to HOST-1 16/11/2007 1:36:45 AM, Migrating VM-1 off host HOST-2 in DATACENTER-1 16/11/2007 1:36:32 AM, Migrating VM-1 from HOST-2 to HOST-1 It seems that DRS is trying to move the VM from and to the same host, and what a surprise, that does not work. Am I reading this wrong or is DRS stupid? Regards, Marten

We are running a number of VM's in a cluster with DRS enabled and most of the time they are beeing distributed around without any problems. However some of the vmotion's try to move the VM from HOST-A to HOST-A and we recieve the error "Operation Timed Out" in the Tasks list. All servers are ESX 3.0.1 managed by VC 2.0.1. Is there any way to prevent VM's to try to DRS From and To the same host? Thanks for any input.

As Im sure all of you know, there are a lot of duplicate answers/questions in this forum, as in all fourms. Many of of the questions could be answered or even avoided if a best practice list is checked first. Preferable before converting. I have seen a few floating around and if it is possible, why not put one up as a stick post on this forum? vmware support is stating that nothing needs to be changed to the processor driver or the number of vCPU's since it should run fine without change. Does not help me though since the VM's time is slow with 1 vCPU and the ACPI Multiprocessor. I have to change something, but I don't know what option to run with in case we will see this over and over again when converting servers to VM's. Thanks for any input. Marten
