Sure. The best experience you can get (my opinion) is to build your own test lab. You don't have to spend a lot of money (relatively) either. You can actually have one ESX server running with another PC running vCenter on it, but what I suggest is the following: >2 Dell 1850 Servers (between $100-$200 on ebay) With the built in IMPI support you can get familar with the automated power managment features. >1 IOmega ix2-200 NAS drive. (This is VMware certified and has block level iSCSI SAN support) This will enable you to learn to use HA, VMotion, DRS, and other higher end features of vSphere. >1 5-Port GB switch for your iSCSI network >1 5-Port 10/100 switch for you main data network. associated ethernet cables etc. With a setup like that you can get a firm grasp on how things actually work, try your own scenarios and generally get a comfortable feeling working with the system. I have this exact system (and more) in my home lab. Check my blog for a more details. Hope this helps Hugh http://www.1zero1.net

Hi All.. This one has the best of all the vendors stumped. I have 2 DL580 G5 set to HA. The machine just hang after as much as 2 weeks or a few hours. They drop out of Vcentre (non-responsive). I log onto the console and if I'm lucky I'll get thru the password prompt then the machine just hang. So on to the ILO and give the machine a hard boot. (And I'm getting close to a hammer with these things) A little back gound. Hardware; HP Dl580 G5 4 X x7460 six core proc 128 gig memory 2 Emulex FC local SATA drives for Host only All guests SAN hosted. Software: ESX 3i, 3.5.0 Build 153875 VCentre 2.5.0 Build 147633 I have other HA machine sets on HP dl580 G5 with 4 core and no issues.. So I believe this is related to the hardware or some setting I'm missing for this hardware. Once the mahcine are up and running, they seem to run very well with managing the guest and balancing just fine.. So if any one has any idea where I cna look for this. Please help. BTW: Had calls into VMware, HP, and even the SAN people.. and no one had any ideas..

I am in the process of setting up a two node ESXi cluster for use in my DMZ environment. I have a paranoid network admin who refuses to allow any network links from the production ESX cluster to the DMZ vlan. The solution was to set up a separate cluster in the DMZ to isolate network track to the host. I would like to connect the management ports for the two hosts to my internal network so I am able to manage them with my existing virtual center server, but the network admin still sees that as a potential risk. He saw the issue in ESX 3.0 where the service console could be access through a compromised host. He wants me to put a virtual center server in the DMZ to manage these two hosts. Due to the licensing cost and complex connection process to connect to the DMZ virtual center I really don’t want to do this. Can anyone point me to documentation that can help me convince him that placing the management in the internal and virtual switches in the DMZ does not pose a great security risk?

It's 64 bit hardware pc and 64 bit operating system. See the attached pictures. I do not use XP mode.

Hi, you can check this to be sure sure about if it's a 64 bit version. If workstation 7 is installed in the x86 program files then maybe you have installed it in the XPM mode that permits running 32 bis applications inside a XP 32 bit virtual machine. Hi, this is strange because newest cpu's are usually 64 bit processors. To be able to run run 64 bit guests the host must support virtualization technologies. Are you sure your host (not guest/virtual) operating system is 64 bit? Maybe it's 32 bit. In fact this would explain that Workstation 7 is running in 32 bit mode, because the workstation 7 installer is 32 or 64 bit capable. In a 32 bit host operating system it will install the 32 bit version. Hope this helps you Regards/Saludos, Pablo Please consider awarding any helpful answer. I have run the 64 bit compatibility check and the message I got was “This host is capable of running a 64 bit guest operating system under this VMware product” When installing VMware workstation 7, by default it installs in C:\Program Files(x86)\ and when running I see that it’s running in 32 bit mode because there is a “vmware.exe*32” under task manager. When I create a new 64 bit virtual machine, it runs perfectly. My only problem is that the program itself runs in 32 bit mode.

We have setup an ESX Host to test out VMWare View for a couple of users. One of our users has been experiencing strange errors on their VM. They were losing PCOIP connection and internet explorer was sitting at 100% cpu. WE tried to update from Ie 6 to 8. All worked fine. We completed a restart of the server, all fine. Then I resized the View window and back and was unable to click anything inside the Guest. So then I opened a console to it (Windows XP by the way). Got an error that it was unable to connect to the MKS. Tried shutting it down but this was unsuccessful, so in the end had to do a Kill -9. After this I could not restart the VM because the .vswp file was locked. In the end the only way to get this VM back was to restart the ESX Host. Now this is the 2nd time we've had a locked file on this VM in the past week. Previously when we tried to restart it we had the same issue and had to restart the Host. Please can someone explain why this VM keeps getting this problem and what can be done to prevent it? Thanks, Nick
