All, I am not sure whether I got the subject line meaningful. I am new to cloud APIs and vCloud - but I understand virtualization. Apparently I don't have vCloud Express to I have no hands on experience. So I am trying to understand some basic concepts + to make sure my understanding so far is on track. As far as I know 1) vCloud and vCloud Express are built on vSphere - which is built on vCenter/ESX 2) Cloud APIs are designed for the end customer (a tenant in the cloud) to manage their own environment My question is Will vCenter SDK calls will work on vCloud as well? Or are there special APIs for vCloud? The reason why I used the term "Provider API" is because the Cloud provider will have an entirely different view of the cloud. So vmware should provide special API's to expose those views. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks ~jx
What's the difference between vCloud and EC2. Given we are aiming for standards here, why did you not adopt EC2? Why isn't Amazon involve in the standards?

You can package your legacy application as a vApp. You can use a freely downloadable tool like VMware Studio to do so. http://www.vmware.com/appliances/learn/vmware_studio.html you can then upload such a vApp to a vCloud. vCloud Express partners already support a subset of the vCloud API . You can find more details about vCloud express partners here http://www.vmware.com/go/vcloudexpress

Folks, We are a software vendor. Our product helps manage ERP/CRM data. It is built on .NET technology. The server component runs as a Windows service. The client application runs on user's desktop and connects to the server. The actual data used by the application is stored in a SQL Server database. Standard architecture. Nothing special. Today, customer's simply install our application on their server hardware. Some of them also install it on a virtual machine running Windows OS. The installation itself is quite straightforward. A few clicks and the product gets installed. I am trying to understand what vCloud would mean to us and how we could leverage vCloud API in our application. 1. What would vCloud "certified" application mean to the customer? How will deploying the application be any easier than what it is today? 2. What are ISVs expected to provide as being vCloud compatible application? Looking at our application, the things that possibiy can be provisioned are disk space, memory usage, and SQL Server usage. But I would imagine these will be controlled from outside the application. The application itself doesn't have to do anything special. 3. What creative ways are you thinking of leveraging vCloud API in your application. Appreciate any insight you can share. Regards, Peter

Dave The VMware implementation of the API has not shipped yet. Each service provider can decide whether they want to provide their own implementation of the API or whether to use the VMware implementation when it comes out. Since the VMware implementation is not out yet, if the vendors you've listed provide the API then they probably wrote their own implementations. The current 0.8 draft spec does not include performance related statistics around the operation of VMs such as CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network; these may be added in the future. If you'd like to find out more about integrating your existing virtualized infrastructure into these cloud resources please feel free to reach out and I can provide some more information to you. I got this confirmed from VMware the vCloud API has not ben launched yet..
Does vCloud API available for download for building Private Enterprise Cloud

Hi All, In one of the presentations at VMworld Steve Herrod was showing a vCenter plug-in for managing resources in the cloud. That raised a couple questions about the vCloud API I had (and I'll caveot this question with the fact I haven't reviewed the API yet). 1. Was that plug-in using the current beta API? 2. If so, can I do the same thing now if I want to move some internal resources to folks like terremark or Savvis today (i.e. view those cloud resources in vCenter)? 3. Assuming the demo had some form of performance or service data in it, is the performance data different (now that i really can't see my hosts and clusters as they are abstracted). Is performance data (CPU, DISK, Memory, etc) represented differently (maybe vApp or for each Virtual Data Center)? The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to figure out how I'm eventually going to integrate all this data with my systems management data and vCenter data if I extent to a cloud. Is the strategy going to be to go to the VI API's for my internal systems and the vCloud API for those in the 'cloud' or have everything eventually funnel through vCenter and pull it from that single source? Topic: vCloud API Overview Webinar Recording (From Technology Exchange Developer Day) http://download3.vmware.com/vmworld/2009/techexchange_vcloud.html PDF Presentation Attached Session abstract: VMware's vCloud API is a key element of VMware's vision for fostering a Cloud ecosystem of Service Providers, Enterprises, ISVs and VARs.The API enables provisioning and consumption of resources in the Cloud, management and publishing of VMs in the Cloud, as well as migration of VMs between internal and external Clouds. In this session, we will get into some details of the API and explore a few usage scenarios. The audience should walk away with an understanding of how the API fits within VMware's overall Cloud vision, what problem areas it addresses and the key concepts it exposes. We intend to release a Java binding for the vCloud API. We encourage folks to work on various language bindings for vCloud API.
Thanks for your support Aaron ! Looking forward to working with our community on this next adventure
I just wanted to say thanks to the vCloud team for submitting the vCloud API to the DMTF. We look forward to working with the API.

Hi, I wonder if someone has already made one step forward and implemented the vCloud API with an OO Java implementation for the vCloud It would probably be interesting to ask the VMWare guys to do this step as this would be used by many tools that are already Java-based. Thanks for your time, Roy
