This may have been a VCenter issue.  I deleted the pool that was using the parent VM.  I started replication, then ended replication.  Then I removed the VM from inventory, then I created a directory under the VM on the datastore, them moved *digest* and *.hlog files to the folder I just created.  Then I re-added the VM to VCenter.  Took a snapshot, created the pool.  Same problem.  I still could not take a snapshot, same error. Recalling that I had troubles in the past with VCenter not releasing the locks on the parent VM as fast  as I would like, I did the same procedure (above) again, with a little more waiting between steps and this time it worked!  The VM is the parent VM for the pool, and I can take snapshots! Hope it helps someone! Scott
Thanks for letting me know.  I think I may build a host running 6.7 to see if that helps. Thanks! Scott

After I create an instant clone pool, I am no longer able to create snapshots on the parent virtual machine.  I receive the error in VCenter: " An error occurred while taking a snapshot: A digest operation has failed.".  If I copy the parent VM (while Horizon is still using it as a parent), I get the same error when I create a snapshot on the copy. The only thing I have found that I can do is kick everyone out of the pool, delete the pool, then create the snapshot, then recreate the pool.  Kinda rough on high availability. I thought it might be related to replication as the parent VM is replicated, so I ended replication on it the last time I had deleted the pool and deleted all snapshots.  Still had the problem after creating the instant clone pool. I don't have this problem with any other VM when taking snapshots.  I was running Horizon 7.12 on ESXi 6.7 until about a month ago and never experienced this issue. VCenter is 7, build 16749670 ESXi hosts are version 7 with no updates available Has anyone else experienced this?
Bummer.  Looks like I have a bunch of scripts to rewrite.  Thanks!
Vmware PowerCLI is installed, but the Horizon-specific command-lets are not available.  Specifically, I can no longer "Add-PSSnapin VMware.View.Broker".

Hi! I upgraded a test environment from Horizon 7.12 to 8 (2006).  After the installation, PowerCLI is missing from the Start menu on the connection server.  When I try to run scripts, it complains that PowershellServiceCmdlets.dll is missing.  I've looked but found nothing to say that the Horizon PowerCLI has been removed and you must now use the REST APIs.  I've tried uninstalling and installing (running the EXE as an administrator), but PowerCLI is still missing from the Start menu, and the dll is still missing from the system. Has anyone else experienced this?  Did I miss something in the documentation that the Horizon PowerCLI is no longer supported? Thanks a lot!

For several years, when listing active (PCoIP) sessions, our internal users showed nothing for the security Gateway, and our external users showed the name of one of the Security Gateway.  A couple  of years ago, maybe around version 7.10, ALL users started showing the same fully-qualified name of a Security Server, whether they were internal or external. We have removed the Security Servers and their paired Connection Servers (via vdmadmin), and they no longer show up in the Settings / Servers.  We have also installed UAGs. Now external users show one of the UAGs in the Security Gateway column, and the internal users show that same fully qualified name of the Security Server that it used to show before moving to UAGs. All of our Connection Servers do have that fully qualified name under the Edit Connection Servers Settings / General / HTTP(s) Security tunnel, but the "Use Secure Tunnel connection to machine is NOT checked, or is the Use PCoIP Secure Gateway for PCoIP connections to machine checked.  I tried checking it, and wiping out the URL, then unchecking the Use Secure Tunnel connection to machine, but the URL is retained when I go back to view it. Is this a problem?  Has anyone else seen this? Thanks!

Thank you! So, after some testing, most USB devices are available immediately (printers, thumb drives).  The scanners, unfortunately, are not.  If I try to use a scanner in the first 60-seconds or so after logging it, the scanning fails, saying the scanner cannot be found.  Turning the scanner off and back on fixes the problem.  Of course if I wait about 60 seconds, they always work.  If I disconnect from that and log in to a pool that does not use App Volumes, the scanners are always immediately available. It's not perfect, but its (mostly) working. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has trouble like this.  The scanners are Fujitsu models 6130 and 7160 using IP Stream TWAIN driver 1.42. Thanks!

Has anyone else had trouble with USB devices with Horizion 7.8, zero clients, and UEM 9.7? We have these registry entires on the master image of our instant clones: HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\Agent\USB\UemFlags DWORD set to 1 HKLM\Software\Immidio\Flex Profiles\HorizonLogic DWORD set to 0 USB devices on our Wyse P25s with firmware 6.4 do not work until the session is disconnected and reconnected. Master image is Windows 10 LTSC (1809). We are using, in our testing, a single, writable, App Volume (2.17.0.50) with UIA+Profile. Thanks for any input!

We are using VMware Horizon 7.8. We currently use Wyse P25s with 3 peripherals at each desktop. 1. Fujitsu 6130 scanner, 2. Brother 2270DW Printer and 3. Dymo labelmaker printers - various models. These all connect just fine to our instant-clone-based Windows 10 machines. We are trying out using Server 2016 remote desktop pool instead. Most things appear to work better with the significant exception of the 3 peripherals mentioned above. Server 2016 "sees" the devices when attached, but fails with event ID 372 when I try to print. The scanning software says there is a communication error. I purchased a USB-over-IP device. When I connected the peripherals through there, the devices worked fine. We may have to do this, I just don't want to add another two devices to each location (the USB-over-IP device and a small network switch). Since the devices all work when connected via the USB-over-IP device, I'm pretty sure the problem is somewhere with the P25s. The USB keyboard and mouse do work. I also tried a powered USB hub for the USB devices, but that didn't appear to help. At least the printers work when connected via the VMware software client. Just upgraded the firmware in the P25s to 6.4 with no perceptible difference to the functionality of the USB devices. Thanks for any thoughts about getting these devices to connect to our WIndows 2016 server via the USB ports on the Wyse P25s.

I think removing the older snapshots from the chain would be a pain.  I've dealt with it in two ways: 1.  I have a script to delete the pool, delete all snapshots, then rebuild the pool.  Not ideal.  Especially since I like to keep the last few snapshots around...just in case I need them. 2. Copy the master image (from the last snapshot).  Push a new image from the copy of the master.  After a while the locks get released from the master image and the snapshots can be deleted as usual.  Push a new image from the master (non-copy) image. I fiddled with it some, but disabling the pool never worked for me.  I was hoping that if the pool was disabled (perhaps for a certain amount of time), the locks would be released from the snapshots. I was just hoping someone had found a trick.  Thanks for the reply! Scott

Hello! A client pushes a new instant clone image weekly to a pool of instant clones.  When I delete older snapshots, VCenter (or PowerCLI) respond almost instantly that it was successful.  It does remove the snapshot from the list of snapshots, however it does not really remove the vmdks for the snapshot.  It behaves this way very consistently. Only the 2 most recent snapshots are really in use.  I suspect, however, that Horizon and/or VCenter have a lock on the older snapshots. Is there a proper way to delete older snapshots?  If I disable the pool, can I delete the older snapshots?  If disabling the pool enables that to work, do I need to wait a few minutes for the locks to release before deleting the snapshots? Now that the older snapshots no longer show up in VCenter, is there a good way to delete them without cloning the VM and losing the other snapshots? Thanks! Scott
Thanks a lot for the comprehensive answer.  This is exactly what I needed! Scott

Hello! We are using Horizon 7.8, and would like to, generally block USB access, but give USB access (specifically thumb drives) for a few specific users.  Most users connect via Wyse zero clients, some use the VMware software client. I was unable to find a way to grant thumb drive usage by user.  Is there a way, by running a command when a user logs in to either grant (or deny) access to thumb drives?  If a command can do it, then I could use the User Environment Manager or a login script or other method to conditionally configure the session for the user to grant access to thumb drives. Thanks a lot! Scott

Ha! We have a working instant-clone environment using UEM.  The users with larger profiles can take in excess of 2 minutes to log in.  I was hoping App Volumes would capture everything for the user.  And be faster.  While it appears that it maybe measurably faster, it is starting to appear that it is not a comprehensive way to capture and restore user settings.     I suppose we could look at a combination of UEM and App Volumes for user settings. I wish I had seen that article a couple of years ago about saving the settings in UEM.  I ended up writing a program to save and restore it each time. I just found that when I use the UIA + Profile template (before I was using Profile Only), the Firefox settings are retained.  Firefox is installed in the Gold Image.  They are retained in the same session as well as after logging out and logging back in.  Audio volume, however, is still not retained.  I have a UEM fix already working for the audio volume, but makes me wonder what other settings might not be retained. Thanks for the help! Scott

Well.  That took some "doing".  I started the upgrade in a server that was running Server Core.  It said it had to upgrade the SQL server, but it couldn't.  So I tried to upgrade SQL server from the command line, but that had problems, too. So, I did a fresh install of Server 2016, with Desktop Experience.  Installed the Microsoft updates, then installed App Volumes 2.16, but no volumes would mount.  The App Volumes server had three HTTP errors listed in a row, and the login would just hang. So I uninstalled App Volumes and reinstalled it.  After it was reinstalled and rebooted, it was asking to join an existing App Volumes server.  So I uninstalled it again, and reinstalled it, selecting the "overwrite the existing database" option.  Success!  At least, I could log in. I still have the same problems, though.  Firefox settings are lost WITHIN THE SAME SESSION.  So if I load Firefox, change a bunch of settings, then close Firefox, then restart Firefox, it is like Firefox has never run.  The speaker volume setting is not retained between sessions, either. Does anyone know if the volume is a setting that should be retained in the User Profile Only writable?  Any thoughts why the Firefox settings are not retained in the same session? Thanks for any help!

Hello!  We have installed App Volumes 2.15.  The instant clone is Windows 10, 1607 with UEM and the App Volumes agent installed.  The test user has a profile-only writable volume, is excluded from UEM, and can login, but some of the settings are not retained. Things that ARE saved: Calculator settings Taskbar settings Background settings Internet Explorer settings These settings all persist across logins. Things that are NOT saved: ANY Firefox settings, although we can see the FIrefox profile being updated in AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles.  If I, for example, change the default page, close Firefox and restart it, the default page change is not retained. System volume We are currently using UEM to persist massive amounts of data, causing login times to grow to 2 or 3 minutes in some cases.  I am investigating using App Volumes to retain user profile settings.  Firefox is the only application currently installed.  I initially tried putting FireFox in an AppStack, but found the settings were not being saved.  I put Firefox into the Gold image to see if that helped. Thanks for any help or suggestions as to why these settings are not being persisted across logins.
