We are notign all our Linked CLones are misaligned on the storage array. Note that the parition within the guest is aligned to 64KB as it should be, but the actual linked clone is misaligned by View composer. Apparently this is to do with Vmware's relazed palcement of VMDK's in linked clones, and apaprently it was due to be fixed in VIew 5. However I have just tested it and we still are getting reports of misaligned files by the Netapp. Has anyone had anything confirmed by Vmware wither about this issue, or about a fix?

Yes those advantages are true. I'm not sure about the integration with Xenclient and Xen Desktop, if it doesn't already exist it will soon. Thinapp is a great app-virtualisation tool in my opinion. Very simple and fast. With Xendesktop, if you dont get your profiles right, application launch times can be slower.

That will be great if you have anything. Yes when a session disconnects, it remains in that state for 2 hours. It's interesting you said that consumes a license, as we have an email from our VMware rep stating a disconnected session does not consume a View license. I think I verified that in the terms of the license also. Be interested if you have any links to that on the VMware site?

Not really - I can get a list of events out of it, but my problem is I am running out of licenses so need to prodcue a report of users and the amount of time they are spending in VDI so we can target the heaviest users. My SQL is only good enough to do a select of log on and log off events based on user ID. Now If I could get that into a SQL report summarising hours per day spent against user, that would be ideal

I have deployed both Xendesktop and View, and I must say I have less headaches with XenDesktop generally. Areas I would take care to compare are: Bandwidth consumed over a WAN with each protocol Performance of each protocol for the end user Do WAN accelerators need to be used? PCoIP can't be accelerated in this way Work out how apps are going to be delivered, to have XenApp to fill in the gap between virtualised apps and apps installed as part of the image is a big advantage System alerting and reporting Profile Management (View should have the advantage with version 5) Disk IO load

This seems very lacking in View 4.6. I have had to write powershell scripts to report on usage, but now am trying to write a report to show logon and logoff times of users, ideally pulling this into a report of how many hours each user is logged on for a day. Has anyone got any scripts/SQL queries/ other reporting mechanism to produce reports such as this? Thanks
I tried disabling AV completely after your answer, but the application is still slow. Is there anything else I can look at?

I have several applications that are noticably slower when streaming from a CIFS fileshare. If I copy the Thinapp files locally it runs much faster. The performance of the CIFS share is pretty good, being able to copy down large thinapp files at a rate of around 280MB/sec. The application I am looking at currently is around 270MB in size. What could be causing this, or how can I troubleshoot it?

PCoIP does not work across Direct Access because of the IPv6 components. I have had this confirmed from Vmware. It looks like RDP also doesnt work when tunnelling through a Security Server, I cant get it to work but am about to log a call too. Using UAG gets round this issue, although we have been having a lot of issues, we are not sure if they are UAG related yet.

OK, but did you run into any issues when setting the idle time over 20 minutes? It seems that PCoIP blacks out the screen and prevents the screensaver from running. But over 60 minutes the screen locks. I am testing but with these timeouts it obvisouly takes hours to get to the bottom of it!!
Why did you move away from the screensaver method? Did you experience some of the issues I am getting? If you're using the AutoIT script, what determines if the session is idle?

I am having trouble with the screensaver method, wondering if you had anything similar? It works fine when setting the timeout to less than 20 minutes. Over 20 minutes, PCoIP seems to black out the screen and the screensaver is not invoked. If I leave it long enough to actually invoke, I am presented with a locked screen meaning the user needs to send ctrl-alt-ins to unlock. And yes I have trawled through GPOs to ensure they are setup correctly.

I am using PCoIP to connect to View 4.6. Is it possible to set a session idle time when using PCoIP, similarly to RDP. So if a user launches their View session, but minimises it, the session is still marked as connected and consumes a session. In this scenario, I want View to detect that the user is not actively using the session and disconnect it, then after a set amount of time, to log the session off. I cant see any settings in GPO for this, but I havent tested if the Remote Desktop idle session settings work for PCoIP?

We are using PCoIP gateway and remote users connect in from home using Microsoft Direct Access. This works over IPv6 so that the IPv4 address of the PSG is translated as an IPv6 address. But this means that the external URL setting on the connection server cannot be added as an IPv6 address. Has anyone got this to work or is it not supported?

I am going through a security review for using localmode in View 4.6. I am trying to determine whether NAT or bridged networking is more secure? In this use case I have a secure VDI which can be used in offline mode from a non-secure machine. This non-secure machine can be taken home or run from any internet connection and I am trying to protect the localmode desktop. My initial thought is that NAT is more secure as the IP address is hidden from any public networks. but what if somebody could hijack the VMware NAT service to read any network traffic going though? Has anyone ever gone through anything similar or got any views on this?
It sounds like a firewall issue to me. Do you get a black screen for 30 seconds or more? Do you get an error message? Is there a security server involved in this?
