What is the flow over conversations when a client with Horizon client connects to a connection server? Is it that there is a TCP connection to the connection server, the client is directed to their desktop and from then on the Horizon client is talking to its desktop with no more packets going to  connection server? Looking at the numbers of connections on my load balancer - UAG VIP compared to connection server VIP I think that's how it works. But wonder if someone familiar with networking and Horizon could confirm that.

My VDI team was trying to upgrade the OS on the instant clones in a couple of pools. But after it did the first 15 it came to a crawl and took hours to complete the operation. Can someone describe what is happening at the network layer when you perform this kind of operation? If you have any thought as to why this kind of provisioning might slow to a crawl - do let me know! I see no bottleneck at physical network interfaces and I see no errors. Fishing for ideas! Thank you.

vCenter detected duplicate IP addresses as below. The are iSCSi initators A and B on a Horizon Desktop dedicated blade. This is on a Cisco UCS. If I go to the adjacent layer 3 switch I can find these in the arp cache but I only see these mac addresses an no others. Might anyone have a tip as to finding what other mac addresses are competing for these IP addresses?   hview-vc01 A duplicate IP address was detected for 10.1.2.115 on the interface vmk2. In this VMW video on Multi VLAN for instant clones - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snfybp2AM6k - the presenter says at 1:30 "IP addressing size has to match the physical vlan configuration". Coming from the network side of things - a physical VLAN is a layer 2 construct and IP addressing sits on top of whatever VLAN. So saying they must match - to my ear - is like saying your apples must match your oranges. Can someone please clarify for me what is meant by "physical VLAN" in this context?  Also in our environment the admins have set each Instant Clone pool to have port group size 750. Might you have a thought as to where this figure would come from? Generally as the network guy I assign each VLAN a /23 affording 500 or so usable addresses. They were having issues with multi vlan running out of IPs and then they set some of the IC pools to 750 which seemed to make their issue better. But I have no sense why 750 would be better than 1000 or 500 or where that figure would come from.  We have 10 IC pools each each with multiple and many overlapping port groups now each configured with 750 ports. How does VMWare determines which port group the IC should use and whether there are IP addresses available to serve it?

We had some users today complain about their screen freezing up in the middle of a session. They are restored with a reboot of their VDI. In the past we've seen these errors - or complaints of slowness in the VM. I wondered what tools exist for monitoring user experience of Horizon VDI sessions. We have Solar Winds User Experience. Is there anything which gauges who the users are experiencing VDI?

We have a typical setup of UAG open to the Internet and then connections from the UAG to the connection servers. Suddenly today users on the outside going to the UAG when trying to connect their Horizon client were prompted for user name and password and promptly got "You are not entitled to use the system" error message. Users on the corporate network who went directly to the connection servers had no problem getting to their virtual desktop. Does anyone have a thought as to how one path would fail for entitlement but going direct to the connection server would succeed? Thank you.

I had been informed in anther thread that I should be able to see the IP address of the client initiating a Horizon Desktop session by using the Horizon Help Desk Tool. What I'm running into however is that when I find a session of state "CONNECTED" and right click on it I see "Show Details" - which looks so promising. But when I select it, nothing at all happens. Might anyone have an idea as to why? Thanks!

It had been working fine for them. But then when we changed the IP address of the printer on the local desktop, the option to print to the local printer disappeared from the VDI. But sounds like you think that if it had been working that likely Integrated Printing or Virtual Printing was installed on the desktop. Do you know what I would look for on their VDI? Those would be standalone programs? Or an option somewhere? That's a good point on the Horizon version. I didn't ask. Will check that.

The IP scheme in one of my remote offices changed today. We changed the IP address on the local desktop computer. But when we went to print from their VDI the option to print locally was no longer there. How does one setup printing on a local Windows machine and then have that local printer visible to the windows Horizon virtual desktop? My own desktop seems to have just done it with no extra effort on my part. But I don't know how to show someone else how to do it.

We have a standard two router two ISP BGP peering arrangement at our edge. About half of our users connect to their virtual desktop using Horizon client and connecting to the UAG from various spots on the internet. Two for the second time we had one of the BGP peers go do. When that happened all of the Horizon connections to the UAG failed. The screen froze and eventually you were just out. If you tried again just moment later most of us could get back in There is a side issue that a number of users go the "Too many active connections" message. I'll ask about that at the end. But my main question is: Is there anything that can be done to make Horizon Blast connections to the UAG more resilient to a partial outage such as I described? Other applications say no drop at all - our web presence, over a hundred DMVPN spoke sites, vertical applications, connections to the cloud. No other complaints or anything seen in monitoring except these Horizon-UAG disconnects. Your thoughts are appreciated! Also if you have any thought about avoiding the Too many active connections message when a bunch of clients get dumped for something like this that would be interesting too. Thanks.

Do think clients generally have the ability to print locally? e.g say you had a user in a home office with a Samsung thin client running Horizon. Would the user likely be able to print locally from within their Horizon VDI session via the think client's IP reachability to the local printer? Thank you.

The Horizon Helpdesk Agent looks pretty slick compared to the web administrator UI. But what I was most looking forward to was more details on the individual sessions. I am finding that if I click the box to the left of a session then right click that session it gives me the option to choose Show Details. Aha! But then disappointingly, when I click on Show Details absolutely nothing further happens. The session I've tested is using blast protocol. Any thoughts on why the movie stops just as it's getting to the best part???

I'm going to be traveling to remote offices soon to try and evaluate some performance complaints I have from users about Horizon. There's lots to improve on the internal network so it could be issues there rather than Horizon or the desktops themselves. But while I'm there I'd like to gather some metrics on the Horizon client performance in addition to my notes about my subjective experience interacting with the desktop and the array of applications. Is there a diagnostic tool available to Horizon admins? Any set of tests recommended?
That's really helpful. We have dozens of remote office and reports of performance vary greatly.
