Thanks roneng. That was it!! I disabled Windows firewall on the VM since it's just a test machine. I didn't think of checking the firewall because it was working fine earlier even with the firewall enabled and I hadn't made any changes to it. Not sure what happened, but it's okay for now.

Hi, I'm not really sure how to go about troubleshooting this. So, if you could help me point to the right direction, that'd be great. I'm working on a work laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). Let's say the hostname is win7 and it's ip address is 10.111.112.xx. This machine is part of a workgroup. I have access to VMware View (I believe it's version 5). I've created a VM through vSphere client 5. The VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2. It's joined to a domain instead of a workgroup (unlike my laptop). The ip address of this VM would be 10.111.113.xx. Notice that it's ip address is just in a different subnet. I'm not able to ping the VM from my laptop. So, obviously I'm unable to RDP as well. However, from the VM I can ping my laptop. Right now the only way I can access/use the VM is via "Console" in vSphere client, which is not really ideal for regular work. Would you be able to help with this issue? Basically, I'd like to be able to RDP to that VM from my laptop to work on it. Where's the issue?
Hi, Yes, the application was captured on the same OS (Windows 7 64-bit) as the deployment OS.

Hi there, I've been trying to capture an application for sometime now and keep running into this same issue. I'm using ThinApp 5.0. The application installation involves several reboots and manually registering various dll files. The application works fine on the reference machine where I capture the setup process. Once I take the captured application to another computer (same environment: Windows 7 (64-bit)), it launches through thinapp and shows the login prompt. As soon as I enter the login credentials, the following error pops up: "C++ Runtime Library: the application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way" During the capture process, I made sure to launch the application and log into it successfully before doing a post-scan. I've already compared that the test machine and the captured machine has the exact same C++ runtime installed. In fact, I tried running through the installation without c++ runtim installed on the capture machine and noticed it doesn't install any c++ runtime library and still works fine. My only problem now is that even though the capturing of the application "seems" to be successful, I can't take that to another computer and run it successfully. Has anyone run into a similar issue or know where the problem might be? If you need more details or have additional questions, please let me know. Thank you,
Cdog8251, You may want to open a new post or search for existing posts on Java 7 Update 51. This post is about IE 10.

Hi Cievo, Yes, I've tried to use the ThinApp 5.0 but unfortunately it didn't work and it's not entirely a packaging issue. It's difficult to get that website to work in one shot. I don't even have proper setup/installation steps. This time, I couldn't even get the site to work properly after upgrading to IE8. I started with a fresh Windows XP SP3 installation and then did a prescan using ThinApp 5.0. Performed an IE upgrade from version 6 to version 8. Configured the necessary IE options (i.e. adding the site to trusted site list, enable activeX related options, view in compatibility mode, disable pop-up blocker, registered the necessary dll files, etc.). But the website still didn't work. So, there wasn't really any point in running the postscan at this point. There's probably some other components that needs to be setup and I don't have any info on the requirements. Unfortunately I had to drop this and move on to other work. I was able to successfully configure this only once before doing a postscan but that was done using ThinApp 4.7. The website was working fine before the post scan but after the project was built, although virtual IE8 was working, that website wasn't working on that virtual IE.

Hi, I'm working on a virtualizing IE8 using ThinApp 4.7 because of a website's compatibility with Windows 7. The site needs special configuration/setting change for the browser and it also depends on some activeX. Those activeX controls are installed manually by extracting dll and inf files from some cab files. The inf file needs to be installed by right click --> Install and the dll file needs to be registered on Windows XP. The inf file doesn't install on Windows 7 natively. I've captured IE 8 from Windows XP with all the required settings and installed the activeX files. Tested and confirmed that the site working properly. After building the project, I can run the virtual IE 8 on a Windows 7 machine that has IE 9 installed natively. But that website is not functioning properly. The virtual IE8 is fully functional. So, it seems that the activeX setup or the dll registration didn't get captured. Could someone help me troubleshoot where this went wrong? Thanks,

The step by step guide you pointed to is a good reference. I've followed that as well and captured Java 7 Update 25. It worked out pretty well so far as a proof of concept. My goal was this: 1. Uses' computers will have latest versions of Java installed. 2. The standard browser is IE 9 There's one webapp that won't work with latest version of Java (7 Update 51) but various other sites needs the latest version. So, I only virtualized the older Java and used the local IE (version 9) as an entry point, which uses the virtualized version of the java runtime instead of the latest version of java installed locally on the computer.

Hi, I've got two/more websites that has different java run time requirements. One website is depenedent on older version of Java and the others need the latest version of Java runtime. So, I'm testing the thinapp package on a computer that has the latest version of Java runtime installed. I've packaged the older version of Java runtime using ThinApp 4.7 and configured the entrypoint for that package to use IE installed on the local computer. Configured the entrypoint to open that particular site automatically. So far this is working as expected. However, if users open any other websites on that same IE window or on a different tab, it still uses the virtualized java for the other websites. Only way to bypass it is to open a new IE session window and then open other websites. This could be confusing for the users. Is there anyway I can configure the thinapp package so that only the website mentioned in the package.ini file will use the virtualized java runtime. I'm trying to avoid virtualizing both IE and Java runtime. Could you please advise? If I didn't explain the issue properly, please let me know and I'll try to write down step-by-step on what I've done and what the issue is. Thanks,
Thanks Linjo for the suggestion. It seems promising. I'll look into it.

Thanks Linjo for your reply. I've worked with ThinApp a little bit. I think I can get this packaged so that it'll map a network drive and then launch the appropriate program from that network share. But how would I go about configuring the package so that the app will ignore all future Windows updates that are installed locally? Would you be able to help with that?

Hi there, I have some users who are using couple of applications that are run directly from a network share. The applications are legacy products and are not fully/officially compatible/supported on Windows 7. Is there anyway to wrap these applications using ThinApp? Although the users are able to run these applications on Windows 7, some of the features are currently not working. In case one of the apps, the issue seems to have surfaced since a recent Windows security update. Prior to the update, the application was working fine on Windows 7. As mentioned earlier, the applications are run directly from a network share. The users just have a shortcut on their desktop that launches an executable from a network share. So, there's no local installation. Is it possible to use ThinApp in this scenario? If you need more information, please advise. Thanks
Looks like "Enable the shade" is the only option I can get closest to what I was looking for (at least for now). So, I've marked this as the answer. Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for that hint. I just tried it out and it works great, but that's not what I'm looking for. Although I can see this would be useful sometimes. I'd still like the menubar on the top. I guess what I'm looking for is something similar to the policy "Pin the shade" but for the other buttons on the menubar. But looks like there is no such policy that can enable/disable the minimize or maximize or disconnect button.

Thanks for the suggestion. Somehow finding the documentation on view client was challenging I've gone through the client configuration settings available through GPO from the following documentation. Unless I missed somehow, it doesn't have any setting that can control the minimize/close button on the client. http://pubs.vmware.com/view46/ol/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=admin/GUID-76498F8F-BAD5-4835-86F1-2981EBA6ECF9.html

Hi there, I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I couldn't find the info I was looking for while searching online. Is it possible to disable the maximize/minimize/disconnect button from the top bar after that appears after connecting to any VM? I'm using VMWare View client 4.6. If you need more info, please let me know. Thanks,
Thanks grossag. I will try out the command line of the wswc.exe and see what I can find out. Regards, Pman

Thanks a lot for your reply. I already have EWF enabled on the thin client, so users changes won't be saved when the thin client is rebooted. You're right that a reboot or log off will bring back the fresh image again. I guess it's more of a wish . Thought there might be a registry setting that can enable or disable cancel button or prevent users from editing the "Connection Server" field. Regards, Pman

Hi there, I'm relatively new VMWare, so my appologies if this is not the correct forum to post this question. May be a moderator can move this to appropriate forum if necessary. It might be a trivial question, but I wasn't able to find the answer. So, I thought I'd ask here. I'm setting up a Thin Client (HP t5740 running XP Embedded) in Kiosk mode where the VMWare is the only application available to the user. When the computer is booted up, the VMware View Client 4.6 is automatically loaded and it's also set to automatically connect to vmware server waiting for users to enter their login credentials. If I click on the "X" on top right corner of the view client login window, the client automatically loads again and connects to the vmware server. That's the behaviour I want. However, if I click on the "Cancel" button on the client's login window, then the client goes back to the original window that asks for entering "Connection Server". If a user does click on Cancel in the login window, I'd like the client to automatically connect to the vmware server that was used initially and bring back the login window again OR, disable that "Cancel" button on the login window. Can this be done? I hope I was able to explain clearly above, but if you need more information, please advise. Thank you, Pman
