Chris - are you running VMWare Fusion 4.02? A "bootcamp VM" would be a VM that uses a bootcamp partition (and its Windows OS) on your Mac, if you have that.

I've tried to run Homeworld 2 and Battle for Middle Earth on Fusion 4.0.1 and the two games wouldn't even start. Some process was consuming endless ressources (an svchost.exe I believe) but nothing ever happened on screen. This is on a VM migrated from Fusion 3.1.2 to Fusion 4.0.1 (I've not yet bothered with 4.0.2), on which said games run very well. This was quite a bit of a disappointment to me...

I'm running a Win7 64bit based Fusion 3.1.3 VM on the MBAir. The VM has 1.5 Gigs of Ram and a 32 GB virtual hard disk and that works just fine. I run the VM concurrently with Entourage, Safari, iTunes, and occasionally other programs, and the MBAir is ecrypted with FileVault2. I've yet to run across performance issues - these i5/i7 processors and the SSD hard drive are fantastic. While I do have a BootCamp Partition, the VM doesn't access it. I did try Fusion 4 but quickly went back to 3 as I encountered too many issues; I'm waiting with 4 until I find they've been resoved.
You can uninstall the tools using Windows' uninstall feature (control panel > software > uninstall). Hope this helps. Good luck!

Ah, I didn't catch that, good one

The speed of the graphics "acceleration" will vary with your requirements; I assume that with some functions, it will be really quite a bit faster and with others it won't. I have no experience with Solidworks. The best way to find out is to install the Fusion 4 trial - mind that you back up your VM prior to trying it out and that you keep your Fusion 3.1.3 images so that you can revert to Fusion 3 if you're not happy with Fusion 4.

Yes, I see your point... but you can navigate within Windows with the keyboard. This is how you can get to the Uninstall feature: CMD (the "propeller" key) is the Windows key and opens the Windows "Start" menu then type "uninstall" into that menu's search box, Software Uninstall should show in the Start menu Now hit the "Tab" key until Software Uninstall is highlighted in the Start menu Hit "return" to open it Hit "Tab" a couple of times until the first item in the installed software list is highlighted Use the arrows keys to go down to the VMWare tools Now hit the Alt key on your keyboard, a menu will appear in the software uninstall window, with "File" highlighted Hit the Down arrow key to open that File menu The first entry should be "uninstall" ... select that by hitting return and you should be set to go (navigate in any dialog that may come up with the tab keys, and activate your choice of button with the Return key Good luck!

Hm, odd. Have you tried changing the mouse settings from "automatically optimize for games" to "never optimize for games" (or whatever that is called in English), in the general Fusion settings? If that doesn't help, I suggest you uninstall the VMWare tools (using the Windows uninstall feature), restart the VM, and then re-install the tools.
what happens if you connect a regular (i.e. USB) mouse?
Ouch. If 10.7.2 broke both Fusion 3 and 4 it'd be a major bummer.

I found a dramatic decrease of workload on the host when I upped the memory of my Win7 (64) VM from 1 Gig to 1.5 Gig (1,536 MB). I guess it's the fact that Windows has to do a lot less swapping.
It *is* an MS problem which is why it can be fixed (actually: workarounded) with the registry hack.

Hmmm... > OS X will convert inactive memory to free memory when it thinks it's in an OOM condition, but no sooner.  Obviously, there's a performance hit when this occurs. How will that impact on performance? All the system is doing is flagging a block of memory as being free to use for anyone. Granted, the procedure of flagging may take a nanosecond or so, but is that noticeable? Keen to learn, s.

can you select any Mac folder in that shared folder control panel and add it to the list of shared folders? I'm not sure I understand "I cannot create new shared folders either" - you can only select a Mac folder to be shared with the VM. What happens when you try that and it doesn't work? does the new folder not appear in the list, or does it appear there, but not in the VM?

3 and 4 can't coexist. to trial this (applies to a non-BootCamp VM only): a) back up your VM b) make sure you have your Fusion 3 install disk (or image) around c) uninstall Fusion 3 (but make sure you keep your VM files) d) install Fusion 4 - make sure you use the "upgrade from 3" icon on the trial disk image e) start the VM If you don't like Fusion 4, there are several threads here talking about how to revert, and there's a kb article, too. Example:            What is the proper procedure to downgrade from Fusion 4 to 3.1.3?       I'm not sure how to do this with a BootCamp VM.
