Gee, that a very intriguing piece of information! The reasons you provide sound very reasonable to me: By now, my hardware is about 10 years old. NVIDIA GeForce 980-GTX or Quadro 5000 graphics cards. VMware Workstation regularly complains about these graphic cards not supporting 3D support. So, my hardware may actually be "out of support without notice". I am going to try your suggestion soon. Thanks a lot for sharing this information!
I can't tell. My host has 16 cores and the VM has been assigned 4 of them. It's the only VM running at that time. So, there should be plenty of resources available to run smoothly.

I just created a brand new VM. It's running extraordinarily slow. I'm not running Hyper-V on the host, and I have plenty of free RAM available. The Task Manager on both, host and guest, are displaying mediocre workload. What is causing this extreme sluggishness of the VM? Attached please find the VMs log file. Perhaps this can shed some light to the issue?

Today, I inadvertently installed Hyper-V in my host instead of my VM as I can't tell host from VM when the VM is in Fullscreen mode. Not to mention the many times I'm inadvertently shutting down my host instead of my VM, just because the mouse pointer was moved to the upper corner of the screen. Please, PLEASE, VMware … Add this very neccessarry usability feature!

I installed VMware Workstation to a small Microsoft Surface Go tablet with only 128 GB SSD built in. So, I need all the free space that I can get. In order to keep a VM's footprint small, I selected the VM's "Clean up disks after shutting down the virtual machine" option. This, however, becomes a pain in the arm when trying to close the WMware Workstation application window or when shutting down Windows. That's because there is no progress indicator telling me how much of the optimization has finished and how long i have to wait before continuing. There's even no indicator that's telling me that optimization has completed. Please, VMware, add one or more progress bars to the VMware Workstation status bar, indicating progress and status of optimization.

After a night of sleep I now learned that the password isn't queried when starting the VM but when launching VMware Workstation, or, to be more precise, when the VM's configuration file is loaded by VMware Workstation. So, everything is working fine now, and this case is solved.
Yes, absolutely. I explicitly refused to have the password saved in the Credential Manager store.
I created a fully encrypted VM. Yet, every time I start that VM, I'm not asked for a password. Why am I not getting asked for a password when starting an encrypted VM?

Thank y'all for replying. @wila: The logs read: "Monitor Mode: CPL0" Some of my VMs run Hyper-V themselves, of course, as I'm using Docker for Windows and WSL for development in these VMs. But I've configured all my VMs to use all virtualization options there are:   Strange, though, that the most simple VMs I set up (de-de_windows_10_enterprise_ltsc_2021_x64_dvd_71796d33.iso, nothing else installed, just using Microsoft Edge) are slow and cumbersome.

I recently upgraded my main machine to have 128 GB of RAM in order to improve my guests' performance by granting them more memory. Yet, on the contrary, they seem to run more slowly after the upgrade. When I launch programs in a VM, I'm often launching them twice under the impression that the program didn't actually launch in the VM. Some applications in the VM take 10 seconds or more to launch (e.g. Microsoft SSMS). Same for VMware Workstation itself. It's taking up to 10 seconds before the Workstation application window appears. I very often find myself launching it twice because nothing happens for seconds after launching the program. I configured VMware Workstation to not use swapped memory. This is the only manual config setting I apply: mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE" devices.hotplug = "FALSE"

I can't help it, but I'm pretty sure my Windows 10 guests are all running extremely slow. Sure, I have no means to measure it, yet I have a strong feeling that they are all running quite slow and clumsy compared to their performance 1 – 2 years ago. Currently, I'm running VMware Workstation 16.2.4 build-20089737 on three different machines (all running Windows 10 Enterprise as host OS). Two of these machines I'm running for a number of years, so their performance shouldn't have changed. The third one is a new, top-notch HP notebook. Is anyone here sharing the same observation? Does anyone have a clue or remedy for this?
Ah, yes! Thanks for clarifying! @VMware: All these 3D issues would easily be resolved if you decided to implement GPU Passhthrough in VMware Workstation …

It's 2022 now, and I'm facing the same issue. Has there been added an option to Workstation 16+ to have num-lock being enabled when a guest is booting with EFI?
Here's a screencast depicting the issue:

I'm making a strange observation whenever I try to install software in a Windows VM: Installers take their time, so I'm regularly switching VMware Workstation to Windowed mode and give focus to, e.g., the Firefox browser window in my Windows host for browsing. Sometimes the host windows then fully cover the VMware Workstation application window (I have one application window, one display screen). Many times when I do that and then close or minimize the host application windows after a minute or two (… or five) I notice that the installer application in the guest OS doesn't progress at all. The progress bar just doesn't move. The throbbing animation of the installer's progress bar still is throbbing, the guest OS is still working … but no progress is made by the installer. When I move the mouse pointer to the VM window and click into the guest OS, so the guest OS will be given HID focus, the installer application then continues to progress. This is also true when I'm updating VMware Tools in the guest. So, this strange observation of mine can easily be reproduced. I'm not quite sure what actually causes the installer in the guest not to progress any further when I'm leaving the guest OS and fully cover the VMware Workstation application window. Yet, this behaviour becomes quite annoying when I set-up new VMs, because I'm unable to finish other tasks in parallel. Anyone have any idea what's causing this strange behaviour?
Thanks a lot for sharing this very helpful information with me!
