Very sad but I am guessing that Fusion is not really core to the VMware business, Fusion is one of the last things to have resources thrown at it.  VirtualBox is a bit clunky by it works and it is free!  Will use it for external ESXi VM connection but as for local VM, I am about done.  Fusion 12 ended up being a downgrade for me.  Fusion 12 should be a beta or experimental piece of software not $199 for the Pro edition.  I wonder if there is anyone who has it working as well as Fusion 11 did.

So after the update that was released months ago and creating a new VM.  I can safely say that if my VM outputs sound the screen will go black and redraw.  Any sound however quick or small.  Usually occurs after the sound is played rather than during for longer sounds.  What's worse is if it continues to do this over a period of time, say you have filled the "keyboard buffer", it will then change you to a "safe" resolution which unless you need massive icons and very little usable desktop, requires a VM restart.  There must be something in the sound driver that causes a memory leak or something.  Bit tired that VMWare has done nothing to help.  Had no problems under Fusion 11.  I guess I'll have to find a better hypervisor since it has been so long.
I would say that the new driver makes it more stable but whenever there is sound put through, it seems to go into fits of blank screening.
Okay.  Whilst not a fix.  The new Windows 10 VM is way more usable and not prone to what I would call "Screen blanking fits" and the complete failure of the driver.
Very good description of this problem and more concise than I have previously been.  We seem to be a growing group.  Maybe VMWare will take notice?
Worked great for a few days.  Then I had to post the post I am replying to.  Now it is slowly coming back.  Urgh!

***UPDATE***  The problem returns after a few days, which is by itself quite odd.   So I have been unsuccessful in getting my upgraded windows 10 VM to stop the described behaviour.  However, my new Windows 10 VM does work perfectly.  I thought my new VM might provide some more insight.  The only difference is that my new Win10 VM is UEFI rather than Legacy BIOS. So I noticed that in my new Win10 VM, VM Tools exercises more control over scaling than in my previous VM.  Maybe there is an issue with windows allowing the VMtools to exercise that override or could be the difference between the UEFI vs Legacy BIOS.   Again, may not be helpful but I could not stand it anymore and broke down and installed a new VM.  This one has no problems updating either.

All combinations tried.  No effect for me.

Interestingly enough when playing sound from the VM, my screen goes black and starts flashing on and of (looks like it is constantly trying to resize) then if the piece of sound is particularly long it goes to 800x600 then logs me off and logs back settles at 1152x864. @robkersey Is there a link between sound and your problem?  I thought that if teams is setting it off for you it might be sound related.
Ramped the GPU memory all the way.  No change regardless of Nvidia or Intel Iris Pro.

For those that are having a problem of their screen flashing as if VM is changing resolutions intermittently and Windows 10 is redrawing:  I created a separate subject after viewing one of the videos as to what was meant by "flicker".  Mine ended up not being the same symptom so I wanted to separate out the symptoms I was having.  So I apologise to @erikread if I mistakenly hijacked your thread.  I have created a new thread at "Fusion 12 Big Sur - Screen going black for a few seconds". Sounds like @robkersey is having an issue more like my issue.

Tried all work arounds from Big Sur Flicker.  I was previously working under that one but then saw a video of what was meant by flicker.  Mine is a slow flicker like windows is trying to constantly redraw because of a change in resolution.  Latest version latest VM hardware.  Today it stopped flickering logged my out of the windows CM and decided to stick with XGA on a 4K monitor.  So Restarting the VM.  Only time I have seen this kind of behaviour was in Fusion and I believe it ended up being a memory leak.

While using windows 10 within VM Fusion 12 on Big Sur, screen goes black for a few seconds then will come back with a few flashes.  Sometimes requires some input in order to prompt this.   Almost like it has to redraw the screen.   Sometimes occurs in close succession sometimes can be quite a while.  When happening in close succession it becomes unusable.  This was created to seperate out my problem from that of the “flickering” problem also mentioned in this forum.  This problem does exhibit a flickering as it redraws from black and could be considered a flicker but realised the issue mentioned elsewhere is a constant monitor flicker rather than a flicker while redrawing.  Not sure redrawing is what it is doing but not sure how else to describe it.  I’ve seen this sort of thing occur when there is a memory leak but I have not confirmed that is the case.

Just realised that my problem may be different.  That in my mind is way worse.  Mine is annoying but semi-usable.  My screen had been going black for a few seconds and then coming back.  As of late it seems to make the windows program I am running disappear showing only the background and then coming back usually requiring some sort of input.  Very interesting.  If people could let me know if @ChrisSmithIT 's video is typical of what they are experiencing and if I am the only one where it either goes to black or background for a couple of seconds then comes back.  I will create my own discussion.  @ChrisSmithIT very good to see your video as I thought of mine as a flicker but yours seems to be illness inducing from what I can tell.
