Sadly it seems pretty clear that Fusion has mostly become abandonware for VMware. No release last year and so far little to no indication if/when the next release will happen. The point releases have simply made performance worse and long running issues, especially for Linux VM's, such as broken audio/video/conferencing continue to be ignored (for these we had to switch to VirtualBox). After many years of supporting and purchasing the updates and lack of vision/communication we have to explore other solutions. Also, Broadcom purchase doesn't bode well for the future of this desktop product.

Sadly doesn't surpise me. facetime camera for me (and some others) has been unusable in Linux VM's for a long time under VMware Fusion. This has been reported multiple times with no progress (same goes for audio issues). Haven't tested it with a Monterey VM and will post once I try it. In the meanwhile the camera works fine in Linux VM's under VirtualBox. Again, haven't tried Montery VM.

Just as an update, the situation is unchanged at the end of 2020 and all the way to fusion pro 12.1.0 (on latest Catalina and latest BigSur). There is a good indication that VMware doesn't seem to give any love/care to Linux hosts for a while now and the focus seems solely on Windows and MacOS guests. Some of this is emphasized that we are not getting any feedback on any forum posts/support requests regarding the bad audio and camera performances (aside of a comment a long time ago saying 'it's a known issue and being worked on').

Hi when trying to use the Microphone in Linux based VM's the result is distorted/cracking sound, making it unusable for any application such as zoom, skype, voice recorder, obs studio, etc. Tested on VMware fusion 10.1, 11 and 11.5 on newest and older MacBook Pros (2019 to 2013) with MacOS Mojave and Catalina. Also tested with various Linux distros such as Fedora 31, Arch Linux, Ubuntu 16.04/20.04 and CentOS 7/8 Windows VM work fine. Would be great if we would start seeing some more love putting back into Linux VM's. as things seem to be getting worse, such as the issue that since 11.x the webcams have become unusable (see Re: Fusion 11.5 turned my Mac integrated webcam into slooooooow and ruined ) Big
Yes, as mentioned in my reply above "...in all vmware versions since 11.0, all the way to the current tech preview..."

Hi just to add to the original post and the following, mostly frustrating answers is, that this is not a problem with Ubuntu only. Most major Linux distributions are affected by this and cause the webcam to be unusable in all vmware versions since 11.0, all the way to the current tech preview. As you can see from other threads, such as Webcam performance inside VMasked by rakshak_r on October 14 2018 4:29 PMI am getting (approx)1 frame a sec on my webcam's video stream when I open it using an application inside my VM. It this expected behavior or is there something I can do to improve my framerate? D... this is a well known issue at VMware and so far they have shown zero interest in 'fixing' this issue, which affects quite a bit of users. Running containers natively, etc. are much more interesting features to work on for the engineers, than fixing long term existing and reporting issues. At this point your only options are to downgrading your Mac to at least Mojave and run 10.5 or move to any of the competing virtualization products. We certainly sadly have given up to use fusion for anything linux desktop related and moved to other products for those needs. It is also sad, that for a paid product that isn't very 'cheap', it is impossible to get any support from the company. Only option is this community forum, for which we also get practically no support from related company employees. Regards
