Update: VMware Player 16.2.4 sees not to have vmrun in the package so I have installed VMware Workstation 16.2.4, moved vmrun (which Workstation installer does have from its directory) uninstalled Workstation installed Player and moved vmrun back. Now vmrun -t Player suspend works but vmrun -t Player start does not. Any suggestions?

I am having a problem with vmrun This command works almost as it should (the vm does start): vmrun -T player start '/vm/strategy.local/strategy.local.vmx' ...except there is this error message once the VM is running: ."Error: Cannot connect to the virtual machine" However, when a VM is indeed running, these commands don't: vmrun -T player list "Total running VMs: 0" vmrun -T player stop '/vm/strategy.local/strategy.local.vmx' "Error: The virtual machine is not powered on: /m2/vm/strategy.local/strategy.local.vmx" Operating system: Linux Mint 5.15.0-41-generic x86_46 Vmware player v 16.2.3 V Mware VIX vmrun version 1.17.0 build-6661328 Any insights as to the cause / resolution greatly appreciated.

This I think is an issue with libpython3.7 (which the VIX installer requests). BUT when the 3.7 libraries are removed (leaving the default 3.6 version), VIX no longer runs since it still seems to think they are there, when in fact they have been removed. This works fine... vmrun -T player start '/vm/bpg_winserv/bpg_winserv.vmx' but it fails when I add the nogui option... vmrun -T player start '/vm/bpg_winserv/bpg_winserv.vmx' nogui Error: The operation was canceled The logs seem to suggest (line 728 in vmware (nogui).log) that the nogui option can only be used if the product is licensed fro commercial use. Does anyone know if is this is the case? Many thanks Simon

Apologies for what may be a really stupid question. I've just installed Player on my wife's PC under Ubuntu and the Windows guest appears to be generating rolling snapshots (and generating crippling amounts of IO in the process) so I would like to turn shapshots off. (I didn't think Player generated snapshots - and it doesn't on my PC) I don't recall seeing any option in the VM setup. but can I diable them now? I have no evidence that snapshots are being created other than this output from iotop (also attached)... Many thanks Simon

I recently moved from Player 3.1.5 to V 4.0.1 - and then back again. While 4.0.1 solved one problem - my Logitech C910 webcam now attaches to a guest without crashing the entire system (host and guests) - I dislike two aspects of the new version so much that I downgraded. 1) The pop up progress bar on suspending and restoring - I found the progress bar at the bottom of the guest window far nicer. 2) The guests in V4 are no longer retored to the monitors from which they were suspended, so I have to move them every time I start up. Not a huge deal in relative terms but sufficiently irritating when it happens every day. Does anyone know if these are things that can be changed by the user? A long shot I know... Thanks Simon

Many thanks. Your suggestion notwithstanding, I have now been running a software RAID based system with Ubuntu 9.10 as the host OS, VMware Worsktation, and Ubuntu 9.10and Windows XP guests quite happily for some months. The rationale was to avoid data loss (a drive crshed on me a while ago and while backups prevented a major loss of data, I wanted something that made recovery easier) The host OS is installed on a RAID10 spanning 20GB partitions on 4 disks. My data and the VM's themselves reside on a RIAD 5 array spanning 280GB partitions on the same four disks. (I also have a RAID 0 swap file - don't know whether thats such a good idea but it seemed so when I set up the system). All VMs (windows and Ubuntu) share the same desktop and document files. Ubuntu 9.10 makes setting up a software RAID system a breeze.

I have been using VMware workstation for some time but recently switched to VMware player 3.0, (largely due to irritating instllation problems for Workstation 6.5.3 under Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64). With Workstation, I use the vmrun command to shut down all my virtual machines. Despite downloading the latest version of Vmware-vix (1.8.1), vmrun suspend <path to vmx file> generates this error message: Unable to connect to host Error: Service type VIX_SERVICEPROVIDER_VMWARE_WORKSTATION My reading of the documentation seemed to suggest that vmrun shoudl work with Player as well as Workstation. Please could someone help me understand what' I'm missing here? Many thanks

I am running two linux (Fedora 9) and one Windows XP guests on a Fedora 9 host. The system runs on four disk drives which are partitioned to create a small boot partition, a software (mdadm) raid0 swap file (8GB) across the four drives, a raid10 root partition for the host OS (50 GB ) and a raid5 parition (800 GB) with the guest OS files and my data. Aabout twice a week, the mouse and keyboard in the linux guest freeze. If I have an ssh connection into the guest and the host I can occasionally shutdown the host but the guest is usually unresponsive. More often than not I have to do a hardware reset whcih is a problem because the raid5 array sometimes takes several hours to resync. I decided on the raid aproach so that in case the system crashed I would have a first line of defense (I do also backup offsite every night). However I'm beginning to wonder whether the raid arrays are perhaps causing the problem. I'm nervous about going back to a simple volume group configuration on the host bcause if I'm wrong, I will still have the regular crashes and may then have to restore from backups which will take even longer. I know this is a bit bizare but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts?
