ok i followed the advice on the link found below and "solved" my problem. as screenio suggested i "Fixed (or at least, circumvented). Added a second NIC to the virtual machine that was NAT (the first NIC is bridged), and, voila! It works." here is the link: "windows xp x64 host and windows 7 x64 guest - can't connect to each other over bridged network to share files" http://communities.vmware.com/message/1471940#1471940 thanks for the help!!! would have taken me for ever and ever to figuret that on my own.

Win7 x64 host; WinXP SP3 guest; VMware Workstation 7.1.0 build-261024 Windows 7 can see all MSHOME or XP computers except for any virtual machines. i can ping the VM machine just fine from the host. Network discovery on the network is slow (on the Windows 7 computer)...it takes 45 - 90 seconds to detect all the computers. The funny thing is...I am able to see the Windows 7 computer from XP computers just fine and quickly too. I can ping from XP to Windows 7 just fine. VMnet1 and VMnet8 are automatically recognized as public networks and thusly controlled by windows 7 firewall. if, and only if, i disable firewall for both public and private networks can the host and VM machine fully communicate. Currently the VM network settings are set for "bridged" What other information should I give that would help you? Thanks! btw... i looked at link below, but not sure if it will help me. not really knowledgeable if i need to customize the script for my particular situation or run as is. i have also looked at link below. but not certain if this is a problem corrected in version 7
thanks continum, but that is a bit deeper than i care to go.

How are you trying to get to the shares (Start->Run xxx or mapped drive)? i can access the shares in every conceivable manner. Start->Run> //192.168.0.10 (host machine) succesfuly mapped drive from guest machine to host Are you using a host name or IP address ? ip address Is there a route from the guest vm network to host machine? yes What do you get when you "nbtstat -A host.ip.address"?when run from cmd line on the guest machine the results show mac address of host machie and several instances of the host machine with "registered" as the status.

host os is winxp sp3 vmware workstation 6.51 build 126130 with winxp sp3 whenever i attempt to access shared files on the host machine from the guest vm i get the folllowing error: "cannot copy file "XXX" the specified network name is no longer available" the share permissions are properly granted. by the way accesing shared files residing on the guest machine seems to be no problem when attempting to access from the host machine any thoughts? any additional info i should provide?

i am a bit new to this. so having now said that, i have one guest machine running winxp pro. i have created three snapshots in a lineal progression. when i navigate vm> clone> clone virtual machine wizard> clone source (or alternately to "ace master wizard") and then attempt to clone the machine from an existing snapshot, i get the following error message: "this virtual machine has no existing cloneable shapshots." why aren't any of my existing snapshots "cloneable"? hopeful someone may have some thoughts. thanks mark

thank you for your answer. it sounds easy. i am not quite sure how to affect your recomendation though. would you dare post a bit more info please. sorry i am a bit new at this. by the way, i understand how to limit access of a physical machine on the lan to the internet by stipulating mac address filters in my router set up. however not certain how to do the same with a virtual machine; or once again doing as you suggest.

ok so i am really new to vmware. i just downloaded and installed the workstation beta. the host machine is behind a software and physical firewall / router. I now install winxp pro with sp2 (which is also installed on the host machine) on the guest machine. no file sharing and connect the guest machine to the internet. i provide some snot nosed 13 year old, or someone with better abilities the key to the kingdom. in other words, i provide him with any tools or information needed to gain unfettered access to the guest machine. To what extent will the security of the host machine be compromised if at all? If there is a security risk, what should be my concerns. would they be the same as with any compromised workstation on my home lan?
