And the external disk is formatted as hfs+ afs ntfs a version for linux ??????
Drive assignment are a Windows thing, not VMWare Start up Fusion Boot up Windows Select (My) Computer In Menu bar, select Tools Select "Map Network Drive" follow prompts
Past install you are, OK.  Search on next items - I only had the install to get past, (no remote access!!  Apple was so kind.)

check your macOS settings in System Preferences ---> Mission Control
VM has automatic snapshots enabled. What did you expect? Each snapshot takes disk space, real space, not virtual. And, remember, a snapshot is not a back-up.
Apple's  System Preferences has tabs/panels for initializing devices and changing device settings .

mine is "/Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Public/" which is  erroneous  with the trailing "/".
Instead, Copy as in make a back-up
