Par your request, I tried VMWare 14 on the freshly installed MX Linux 17.1, which is based on Debian, not Ubuntu. VMWare was installed without any error but when I tried to open pre-existing VMs, I got a following error message: Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory. Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded. Now, it looks like a problem not only in Ubuntu, but also in other Debian derivatives as well. UPDATE: I retried upgrading Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04 since the automatic upgrade notification just arrived. After this update, VMware 14 worked normally and I got no error message. I suspect I upgraded to a beta version of 18.04 by mistake. I think O.P. could also try upgrading to 18.04 to see if that helps. UPDATE2: By unistalling and installing VMware 14, I managed to make it work in mxLinux as well.

I have exact the same problem as you have. I had a perfectly working Windows guest in VMWare Player 14 on Ubuntu 17.10 host. But after upgrading to 18.04, USB connection was completely missing from the puldown list. 1) I removed VMWare 14 and tried to re-install, but the installation for both ver. 14 and ver. 12.5 got hung and never completed. The log file shows error related to "USB Arbitration Service Version 17.1.3." 2) I tried a clean installation of Ubuntu 18.04. But I could not install neither VMWare ver. 14 nor ver. 12.5. The log file shows error related to "USB Arbitration Service Version 17.1.3." I am currently revert back to Ubuntu 17.10 with VMWare player 14. I hope smeone find a solution for this problem before the support for Ubuntu 17.10 expires.

I am using Windows 10 guest OS on Ubuntu Mate (17.04) host running VMware 14.1 on AMD Phenom II X4. When I installed KB4056892 update, Windows 10 VM crashed and the host Linux got rebooted. I have been using the vitual environment for about 4 years and it was the first time I witnessed a guest Windows crashed and took host Linux with it. Windows is indeed a powerful OS . There are reports of imcompatibility between KB4056892 and older AMD CPUs. I am not very clear if mine is one of those CPUs, but I blocked KB4056892 installation as a precaution. There is a handy tool called "wushowhide.diagcab" which can be downloaded firectory from Microsoft for this purpose. At any rate, my understanding is that this patch is mainly for Intel CPUs and AMD CPUs will not be benefitted much from it.

I just remembered I updated my granny's MacBook to HighSierra last month. It was late 2009 model and originally came with Snow Leopard (10,6). What is the model of your Mac? You might be able to upgrade your Mac to HighSierra and install the latest Fusion which will definately solve this imcompatibility issue.

Sorry it was me, who deleted the post. After I posted the comment I realized that the OP was talking about MacOS VM which can be only opned in Mac OS. I felt so stupid and deleted my comment. I think the best course of action is that the OP makes a copy of VM and ask someone who can open it for him/her. Since Fusion can be used for 30 days in trial period, anyone who has a current Mac can help OP without purchasing a copy of Fusion.

I have two network printers. One of them (old HP laserjet) is indeed connected to Raspberry Pi print server, but the other one (newer Brother inkjet) has a built in LAN/WiFi connection. If anyone is interested I can give a step-by-step instruction for how to set up this kind of network printer in Fusion or Workstation. I am surprised to read that you still have a MS Word problem after the VMware tools update. Just to confirm. Did you  install the new tool manually using the file downloaded from VMware site? If you install the tools in a usual way, i.e., click on the toolbar for "reinstall vmware tools", you would get an older version, not a new one.

Finally I managed to use both LAN and WiFi printers from Windows 10 VM, using NAT connection . The page which gave me a hint was this: CUPS Printing with Windows 10 - Spiceworks HTH Happy to add another sucess story. I also managed to setup network printers in Linux VM, using NAT connection. The trick is to "disable" printer sharing. It goes a bit against my intuition, but now everything is working as before.

I spent some more time for testing VMware Tools (10.2.0). I ran the same virtual machines on macos (Fusion10.0.1) and Linux (Workstation Player 14.0). If you care to know, I am using Sierra (10.12.6) and Ubuntu Mate 17.10 (on a physically separate Linux box). The same printer problem was observed in both Fusion and VMware Workstation Player. Clearly, the problem resides in VMware Tools, not in Fusion. This is what I observed: With printer sharing enabled, Linux (Mint XFCE 18.3) VM lists printers but they are not accessible. Manual addition of printer fails. Windows 10 (ver 1709) VM cannot see the printer in the control panel. Manual addition of printer fails. The network connection for both VMs are set to NAT (as I do not wish to expose my VMs to the internet via Bridge mode). When I changed the connection to Bridge mode, Linux VM can see both LAN and WiFi printers. Windows VM can only see WiFi printer. Since I cannot afford any more time to solve this issue, I have resigned myself to switch temporary to Bridge mode to use printers. Hope this work-around might help other Fusion (and Workstation Player) users.

After I installed the latest VMware tools (10.2.0) in the latest Fusion (10.0.1), printers are not working in Windows 10 (1709) as well as Linux (Mint XFCE 18.3) VMs even the printer sharing is anabled. There is no way knowing what is going on in Wndows, but I got the follwoing error message in Linux printer setting. "/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/sRGB Profile.icc" is not available : No such file or directory Yet, this file does exist in the right folder. In my setup, VMware virtual machines are on a data SSD while Fusion app is on a separate system SSD. But this set up always worked till this VMware tools update. I cannot revert to the previoud VMware tools (10.1.0) since it has a critical bug not be able to save documents in MS Office.
I think it is a good idea. I will start the new discussion with an appropriate title.

I am one of those who purchased the Fusion upgrade in hope of fixing this major bug in Fusion/Win10 (1709). Since I am running Sierra and have no plan to upgrade to High-Sierra, this upgrade was not necessary. As I wrote in my previous post, printers are not working in Windows 10 (1709) as well as Linux (Mint XFCE 18.3) on the Fusion 10 after I installed this latest vmware tools (10.2). There is no way knowing what is going on in Wndows, but I got the follwoing error message in Linux printer setting. "/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/sRGB Profile.icc" is not available : No such file or directory Yet, this file does exist in the right folder. It seems tpvmgp printer driver cannnot connect this prfile which locates in the system drive.

I also installed this new version of VMware tools in Linux VM in Fusion. The same printer problem happened. I found the work wround is to disable the printer sharing and setup the printers independantly in Linux VM using its network connection. I tried the same in Windows 10, but this strategy did not work. So my current choice is either print the document (with previous VMware tools) or save the document (with new VMware tools). But I cannot do both at the same time. It is getting ridiculous, considering Fusion is a commetial software with a decent price tag. Maybe I should have a second look at VirtualBox....

I confirm I also have a printer problem with this new wmware tools. Wifi connected network printer (Brother MFC-J870DW) shows in Windows Control Panel, but the printer does not respond to test page printing. LAN connected printserver (HP P1005) does not show in Windows Control Panel and impossible to add as a new printer. All port selections are grayed out in Control Pnel for MFC-J870DW. I suspect some sort of port problem here but have no idea how to fix it.

I also purchased version 10 upgrade like you, but of course that did not solve this problem. Following the suggestion by other forum members, I opened the ticket with VMware. But the only thing I was offered was a work-around solution using SAMBA, which I cannot be bothered at the moment. Fortunately, I had 3 days old VM backup in tar.gz previous to this ill-fated 1709 update. I went back to the older 1703 VM and locked down the version using the group pliciy editor, changed the upgrade channel to CB to CBB, and finally set a time to delay upgrade to the mamimum 365 days. There are 2 major alternative softwares to Fusin. If you run your VMs in Mac only, you can use Parallels - a commertial software more or less the same price as Fusion. If you need crosss-platform VMs, then Virtualbox is the only solution as far as I know. Virtualbox is an open source free software. But you have to be prepared to accept lesser level of user experience in Virtualbox. At least, that was my impression when I tried it about a year ago.

I am a former Paralles user. Indeed their product is slightly nicer. If I give 100 points to Paralles, Fusion will score 95 for userinterface and functionality. But Paralles has a major drawback. While VMware is a cross platform, Paralles runs only on Mac. For majority of the people, it sould not present any problem, but I also use Linux machine. Fusion cretaed VMs will run without any modification under WMware Worstation under Linux.
