Managed to update an existing macOS vm to macOS Sonoma developer preview. Known requirement is a developer Apple ID which is part of Apples's developer program.
Folks? Wow. When you talk about alternatives are you referring to buying an Apple Silicon mac?

VMware Fusion 12.2.3 Kubuntu 21.04 Check for updates via Discover install all update Low Disk Space warning shown: Your Home folder is running out of disk space, you have 0 MiB remaining. Ok great - we know what the problem is. Recover from a backup of the vm. Shut down vm. Open vm Settings > Hard Disk. Disk size is at 20GB. Increase to 40GB and click Apply: Virtual disk resized successfully. Use the disk maintenance tools in your guest operating system to resized or create partitions to fill the available space. Well, a link to a KB article with some details would have been splendid. stackoverflow to the rescue: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/26471342/how-to-increase-hd-size-of-linux-running-on-vmware Nice we are going back to vmware now: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1004071 "If you are running a file system other then ext3, you may need to research an alternative way of accomplishing this. Reiser has its own tool for accomplishing this, GParted Live CD is another popular tool for this." Great, vm runs on ext4 - now what? Lets go with https://www.howtogeek.com/114503/how-to-resize-your-ubuntu-partitions/ sudo apt-get install gparted That gives us gparted. Oh wait "Partitions can’t be modified while they’re in use" which would exlpain why https://stackoverflow.com/a/66417686/2923765 is not working and the unallocated space cannot be allocated to the existing partition.   Any clues how to proceed? Most solutions talk about creating bootable CDs. I am sorry, we now have 2022 and I have not used CDs for a very long time.   Thought maybe creating a new vm will be easier than dealing with those unsolved issues. Turns out, vmware fusion again defaulting to 20GB of diskspace and no apparent way to change this during setup.
So vmware has remained silent about this for over a month. Safe to assume I can throw away the stuck vm?
Would be very interested to hear some response from VMware. Certainly can create a new vm, but would be nice to continue using this with the latest macOS betas.

VMware Fusion: 12.1.0 (17195230) host OS: macOS 11.2.1 guest OS: macOS 11.3b2 I thought 11.3b2 already had the fix to check for lack of free space. Also that would be surprising as this vm has been used for a while and previous macOS 11 betas along 11.0.1 etc all updated fine. As we have at least one other user running into this, it feels as if it is not an isolated local problem.
No longer a problem with Kubuntu 20.10 and vmware Fusion 12.1.0.

While attempting to upgrade to macOS 11.3b2 the vm is now stuck in a rebooting loop.  update download and ran its pre-install routine vm rebooted for installation install progress bar completed another reboot, showing boot bar and apple logo That's it - it instantly restarts after filling a small portion of the boot bar. Shut down vm and restarted to run into the same problem. Any ideas how to get out of this loop?

Is there a tutorial on how SIP can be deactivated for a big sur vm in vmware fusion 12? Seems holding the Command+R key during boot should work, but it does not for me. Another solution is described in this blog entry, which uses alt to get into the vmware fusion boot menu: https://maclovin.org/blog-native/2018/boot-to-macos-recovery-in-vmware-fusion
For what it's worth this problem with VMware Fusion is persisting with Kubuntu 20.04. It would be great if VMware would address this problem.
Working with scripts is above my skill level. What is the timeline for vmware fusion to add official support for ubuntu 19.10?
Does that translate to "Kubuntu is not supported so odd behavior is expected"? vmware tools are installed. Not sure what to make of that blog article.

vmware fusion 11.5.2, macOS 10.15.3, vm: kubuntu 19.10   Network is working fine in vm after booting. Problem is, whenever pausing and resuming I end up with a non working network. Can get back to working state by restarting the vm, but that's somewhat annoying. Any ideas how to fix this?   Screenshots show network working state and non-working state.
Found the answer and edited the original post. See above for steps to solve this if you are in a similar situation.

Host System is macOS 10.15.2, vm is Kubuntu 19.10, attempt to update vmware tools resulted in stuck installation. Virtual Machine now shows "Cancel VMware Tools Installation" but that entry is greyed out. So now I can't cancel the installation nor restart the installation process. Restarting the VM does not bring any change. Steps to resolve the problem: sudo vmware-uninstall-tools.pl sudo: vmware-uninstall-tools.pl: Command not found sudo apt-get purge open-vm-tools* Removed some old stuff. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-lts-trusty Package open-vm-tools-lts-trusty not found. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-lts-trusty-dkms open-vm-tools-lts-trusty-desktop open-vm-toolbox-lts-trusty Package not found. Shut Down and Restart Yey - I can now reinitiale installation of vmware tools. Going to Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools Trying to follow Installing VMware Tools in a Ubuntu virtual machine - YouTube But 0:44 does not apply. The CD is not mounted. I see Device Notifier showing me three options VMWare Tools Copy with K3b Open with File Manager Download Photos with Gnenview Select 2nd option Right clicking VMwareTools-10.3.10-13959562.tar.gz Select Extract To… Next mismatch: Extract To… is greyed out. Now what? (see screenshot) Selecting "Open with Ark" instead. I then extract the vmware-tools-distrib folder to desktop by right-clicking on vmware-tools-distrib > Extract to… > Desktop attempt with sudo ./vmware-install.pl -d failed as the process was option out with [no] default option. Thus tried sudo ./vmware-install.pl instead and was asked 30 or so questions which I answered all by following the default as I have no clue as to what any of those are doing and there is no explanation to that, neither in console nor in the KB from vmware. And with that I finally succeeded. Sincerely hope this is helpful to other users that may be in a similar situation. I fail to understand how linux community can think this is a good way to install something and I would appreciated if VMware Fusion documentation could be updated. This is crazy complicated already. Having the documentation not match current systems behavior adds to the confusion unnecessarily.
Yeah, the host OS / vm OS part was indeed unclear. And you actually read it correctly as host OS . In this case both host and vm are macOS although the thread title was only referring to host.

Downloaded vmware tools for macOS (zip). uninstalled restarted installed VMware Tools 10.2.0 restarted ran into message about blocked system extension. opened system preferences and allowed system extension. another restart was required. then and only then did the shared folder re-appear. thanks a lot for your help and linking me the newer version of the vmware tools.

Thanks wila Tried that. uninstalled vmware tools reboot vm install vmware tools reboot vm wasn't working yet, so disabled sharing reboot vm re-enable sharing Still no luck. The linked folder appears on desktop but the shared standards downloads folder still does not show up inside of that. Added other folders in Preferences > Sharing but nothing shows up. Again, this is working in all other vms.
sharing the default "downloads" folder from macOS. restarted vm various times. unticket sharing and re-enabled sharing. still no folder / content is shown. the same folder is shown for other vms.
