Thank you for the detailed instructions.  I was just curious and I am going to leave things as they are as everything, VM & MacBookPro are both working just fine. Thanks, again. John

I am running VMware Fusion 12.2.4 on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro.  I run my Windows 10 Pro virtual from an external USB mechanical drive.  I was wondering if there would be any benefit, mostly performance, if I moved the C: Drive to the MacBook Pro internal Solid State Drive.  Any issues I may encounter?  Anyone ever done this? Thanks for any suggestions. John

My apologies for not replying sooner!  I found, through much searching, that the issue eventually goes away if you just let Fusion sit there trying to restart a VM.  My readings said it can take from several minutes to up to 6 hours.  Mine eventually came back in about 3 hours.  Has been working fine since. Seems no one knows why this happens and a post from a VMware employee says they can't reproduce the problem to do any kind of investigation! Thanks to all that read this thread and offered any kind of suggestion. John

I am running VMware Fusion 12.2.4 on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro.  I recently upgraded to Big Sur 11.7 and Fusion will not start.  I get “Not Responding” in Activity Monitor and have to quit the application.  Fusion ran fine previous to the upgrade.  I do keep up to date with MAC OS and Fusion upgrades and apply them as they become available and I am notified. It seems I had this problem in the past but cannot find the solution!  I don’t remember the time nor the various versions. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, John

Thanks for the replies. I had to log into Microsoft each time, so my account was not local.  I did have 2 other local accounts that I had created for test reasons and they are fine! I do not use snapshots, so I did not do a restore!  However, maybe I should have and I could have restored back to a known good snapshot, before the update, and my account would be there! Well, I'm pretty much back to where I should be, though I have a few apps that I must reinstall. Thanks for your insights/suggestions.  I did find this to be rather interesting, but not something I will spend any more time investigating, as it's less time and resources just putting things back than trying to ascertain what happened.  And, as I stated, I'd never seen anything like this before, so whatever it was it clearly is not a common occurrence. Agan, thanks. John

Thanks for you response. I really don't know that it has anything to do with Fusion, but I had never seen anything like this happen before, in my 20+ years dealing with and supporting Microsoft OSes, both on hardware and as virtual machines.  So I thought Fusion might be a good place to start. My instincts tell me it was some random occurrence where all the planets, moons and stars were in some kind of alignment, or maybe they were out of alignment!   Anyway, I thought it was curious enough and was wondering if anyone else had seen anything similar. Thanks, John

About a month ago I did a Windows 10 update on my virtual machine and lost my identity!  When I tried to log into my Windows 10, it did not recognize my login credentials and when I logged in as Administrator I did NOT have a USER account and of course no data, meaning all directories and files under my username, which did not exist, were NOT there!  I have no idea how this could have happened and I have NOT been able to recover. Here is my pertinent info: Running VMware Fusion 12.1.2 (17964953) On a MacBook Pro running Big Sur Version 11.5.2 (20G95) Windows 10 Pro virtual machine, 64 bit Version 10.0.19043 Build 19043 Important data was backed up and can be accessed.   If possible I would like to know: What could have happened? What could/should I have done to prevent this? Is/was there any way to recover?   At this point I am rebuilding my user.  Some apps that I had are no longer functioning or are not available.  These are apps that were installed by me for me, like MSOffice, which I had to reinstall and configure, as well as a few others.  I’m assuming there are others which will have to be reinstalled.  All in all, a royal pain.   Any insight would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you, John J DiMack

On Tuesday, 9-Oct-18, I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mojave.  When I went to load my Windows 10 virtual machine I could not login.  The behavior appears that the keyboard and mouse are NOT recognized by the virtual machine.  I can get to the login screen by going to Virtual Machine > Send Ctrl-Alt-Del.  Nothing I do from then on is recognized. I am using Fusion 8.5.10. I have also tried other virtual machines, Ubuntu, Windows 10 32 bit & Windows 10 64 bit.  The same behavior was experienced. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions??? Thanks, John

Thanks, Wil. I don't think the USB External drive is being put to sleep, as it is accessible from the Mac, meaning I see it and can access it and the data on it.  Having done that, the VM Settings still DO NOT show any USB External disks.  Having said that, I did check out the link you referenced and I will try the utility, "Keep Drive Spinning", to see if that helps.  I'll post any results in a few days, as sometimes it takes a couple of days before it goes missing!  (Points awarded IF it stays for several days!) The VM is NOT stored on this external drive.  Yes, unplugging the drive that contains the VM would be bad!!!  And yes, that's experience talking!  We all have to learn from experience. Actually, I did call VMware support and they remoted in, looked at the settings and saw no USB disks available, said, "Hmmmm!", shut down the VM, restarted it and checked the Settings again, and of course the external disk was there, connected it and said, "There, all fixed.".  So I thanked them, and now I thought I would ask the "world" if anyone has any ideas. Again, thanks for your time and advice.  I do appreciate it. John

My virtual machine keeps losing connectivity to an external USB Drive that is hosted on my Macbook Pro.  Is there any way I can a) prevent this; b) edit a file so that the connection comes back; c) understand what might be causing this to happen? There is nothing that is obvious that makes this connection go away.  When it does go away the options under "Settings" > "USB & Bluetooth" also disappear.  I cannot duplicate this at will. This has been happening for quite some time and I find it a pain to shut down the VM and then restart it. I have Fusion V 8.5.8 (5824040). Thanks for any help you can provide. John
