Any idea how I'm supposed to get around this then? Seems like a catch-22, I can't run Win95 because the CPU is too fast, but I can't apply the fix because I can't run Win95. Any suggestions? Thanks

I created a VM and installed Win95 on it. All went well until the first reboot after install, when I got an error "While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" It seems that this is because the CPU speed in modern PCs is too fast for Win95, and due to a bug, it crashes. There are various fixes around, but as far as I can see, they all require you to be in Win95 to apply them. I found this post, which has a link to a zip with some .exe files that supposedly patch Windows to fix the issue, but they can't be run from DOS, and I can't stat Win95 to run them from there. Is it possible to set the VM's CPU speed, which would allow me to get Win95 running? I can't see any options for this. Thanks for any help you can give.

OK, my bad. I'd previously set 8Mb of RAM (ha ha ha!), which took HIMEM a few moments to check. These last few times I upped it to 256Mb (still rather ha ha ha), so it was taking 32 times as long, ie quite a lot of moments. Seems it wasn't hanging before, it was just checking a lot more memory than before. Is there anyway I could close a question like this? I can't see it being useful to anyone in the future, and it seems a shame to clog the site up with my mistake.

I just created a new VM and ran an MS-DOS installer I got from here. I have created a VM from this before without problem (well, apart from the grief I had getting the CD to work, endless thanks to some kind people here who helped me fix that). However, I just tried again, and when setup completes, it reboots the VM but then hangs at the point mentioned in the title. The previous VM I created used to pause for a few moments at that stage, but then boot into DOS. I've deleted and recreated the VM a few times, but I get this problem every time now. Anyone any idea what's going wrong and how I fix it. Thanks
@a_p_ Ah, well spotted! I had copied what was suggested before, and didn't spot what was in the output in my DOS window. All working now, thanks very much.

I realised that I needed to edit both config.sys and autoexec.bat (previously thought it was either/or), so tried again. Autoexec.bat now contains... LOADHIGH=C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSC001 ...and config.sys contains... DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSC001 When I restart the VM, I get the following... It looks like the device driver MSCD001 is there, but LOADHIGH doesn't find it. By the way, I tried both the way you suggested (ie MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:D) and the way I saw it elsewhere (as shown above, with LOADHIGH= before), as well as both DEVICE=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001 and DEVICEHIGH as shown above, but the result was the same. Thanks again for any help you can give

Just found a copy of OAKCDROM.SYS on computerhope.com, but can't work out how to get the VM to see it. At the moment, the only drive it can see is its own C: drive.

The closest I found was a post in an old thread on this forum asking if anyone knew of a download link for this page, but there weren't any replies. Any more ideas? Thanks again

@mickanoor Thanks for the reply. I tried adding the line for MSDDEX to autoexec.bat, but it gave an error "Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'. No valid CDROM device drivers selected I didn't try the second option, as I couldn't find a file named OAKCDROM.SYS anywhere, so assumed that would fail as well. What do I do now? Thanks again.

I created a new VM, and installed MS-DOS. I would like to install Windows 95 over this. I have an iso file for the installation, but cannot get MS-DOS to recognise it. The VM settings show that the mounted CD is available... ...but no matter what drive letter I type into MS-DOS, I can't see the CD. A: and B: give a general failure, and anything else (other than C: obviously, and up to about H: which was as far as I got) gives invalid drive specification. Anyone any idea how I get MS-DOS to see the CD? Thanks

A PC died. It had Macrium Reflect running, which took a disk image every night. I want to use one of these to create a VM of the machine, so I can make sure I've got everything off it. I used Reflect to create a vhd file from the latest disk image, and now want to use that in VM Player 14. According to a few places I've seen (such as the comment to this SO answer, and this blog post), I should be able to do this. However, I can't see any way to tell VM Player to use the vhd file. Any suggestions? Thanks
