Hi, Is it possible to execute automatically a program (Dsynchronize) before the VM closes after pressing the suspending button? I use Windows XP on Wimdows 10 Thanks and regards METsen
I have no problem accessing with Player a folder on W10. But how can I access on W10 a folder in Player?
Forgot to mention: Host: w7 pro 64bit, using Player 15 with guest WXP pro 64bit
How can the correct keyboard layout be selected in the player?

I noticed only by chance that a right-click on the vmdk-file contains the option "Map first volume as Z: (read only)" and indeed this allows to access the VM's C: content. However, with this selection the VM could no longer be opened (started). I actually would not require access to all of C: My intention is to backup a data folder on the VM's C from the host because it becomes more and more difficult to obtain online backup clients and anti-virus programs which are compatible with the old, but still required guest OS. Is there a possibility to achieve this, and - if yes - how?

I finally decided to try recovering the corrupt VM. At the moment its loading ends because the vmdk-file is either corrupt or missing. Is there a way to recover/recreate a working vmdk-file OR import the configuration from a corrupt setup into a newly created VM with the same OS (WXP pro)?

On the search for a hidden bug related with an other program I decided to uninstall my 2 versions of the Windows XP Mode on W7 pro x64; i.e the "independent" (non-VMware) and the Workstation 12 Player also with the XP Mode. Both VMs did before work normal. Because these VMs may possibly have had some relation with a bug in an other program I decided to remove them again for verifying it. The uninstall was started "as usual": Start -> Control Panels -> Programs. I do not remember but at some state I had also to use this Microsoft Fix-it-tool. The tool confirmed that the programs have been successfully removed and they  are no longer listed under "Porgrams". The VMs have however not been completely removed. The folders VMware and its sub-folder VMware Player are still there with their contents. Starting the player shows the XP Mode; clicking on it produces however an internal error. The "independent" (non-VMware) XP Mode produces also an error asking for a new configuration file. Assuming that it would possibly be best to first completely remove the 2 VMs and install them afterwards completely new I tried to manually delete all of them which are in a folder under "Virtual Machines" but I was not granted permission, even being "owner" and "administrator". Any suggestions on how to obtain again "clean" Windows XP on the VMware Player? Thanks in advance for helpful suggestions.

The player provides the setup of Shared Folders which allow access to folders on the host. Is it possible to setup also on the host (W7pro 64bit) Shared Folders which allow access to folders on the VM, and if yes, how?

Thank you, blachnis1, you may probably be right. However, before I start with it I really would appreciate if a "professional" vmware member could chime in to confirm that the previously obtained recommendation is indeed no longer valid, and that it really requires to uninstall the Workstation and install the Player instead.

Some years ago I installed the VMware Player. At that time I was told that I could have installed the Workstation instead which, after the trial period, could continued to be used for free with the limited functions of the Player. Recently I had to replace the hard-disk and installed therefore the Workstation for running the XP-Mode. Now the trial period has ended and the form asks to buy now... How can I continue to run the installed Workstation with the limited functionalities of the VMware Player? Or, is the previously obtained recommendation no longer valid?

1.) Had on the previous (now damaged) hard-disk WXP on W7prof with VMware player, it was superior to XP-Mode. 2) Replaced hard-disk with new one -> system recovery -> installed this time WXP on W7prof with VMware Workstation. Installation was possible and VM worked. 3) Performed 2nd system recovery on new hard-disk because of this processor-related issue. This time I tried to install for WXP on W7prof again the VMware Player because I preferred it. But now I am no longer able to download the vCenter Converter and trying to install it by copying it from the old damaged hard-disk to the new one is also not possible. I would very much appreciate your help for getting the VMware Player again work with WXP on W7prof. Thanks METsen

Had to replace a damaged hard-disk and try now to install the player on the new one. I had no problem installing the player. Next I tried to download the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone. It seems that I cannot download it from the Web-page because I downloaded it already before. When I press the link "manually download" the Web-page jumps to the top showing the "Welcome .." with the link to the list of previous downloads. I then copied the previous install-file from the damaged to the new HDD and run the installation but this ends with Error 29163. Could not copy file C:\Users\....\AppData\Local\Temp\converter-client.xml How can I install the Converter and afterwards also the Tools? Thanks METsen

Just in case someone stumbles over this thread. Before asking here for help I tried to solve the problem by adjusting the language/region-settings in W xp on the Player. Not having succeeded I blaimed VMware having installed a wrong driver. I am ashamed to admit that the problem was not VMware but rather me not having adjusted in W xp the language/region-settings correctly. Now having it done how one is supposed to do it, the keyboard works fine. Sorry.

I do not remember at which moment during the installation I was informed that the keyboard driver "German" would be installed. Looking afterwards at the installed keyboard drivers in my W7prof showed: i8042prt.sys, kbdclass.sys and VMkbd.sys. I assume that the last two of them were added somewhen along this installation. Note that the installation only changed the keybord driver for the guest; the host (and also Windows XP Mode) use still the correct driver. The installation is a first one and followed the instructions which I received in this thread here https://communities.vmware.com/message/2298568#2298568 namely installing Player without Workstation and using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client for "handling" the existing Windows XP Mode.

It's the VMware Player installation procedure which selected the wrong keyboard driver. When the procedure indicated it during the installation I feared to stop the running installation and pressed "continue"; I was hoping to be able to change it afterwards. That was the reason for posting this thread. Not having received a reply during the past few days I assumed that there would not exist a feasable solution. How do I continue now from here? Does it need a new installation of the Player (or Workstation)? Or how else can I change the keyboard driver so that the VMware Player uses the same as the Windows XP Mode?

Not being able to use the correct keyboard driver for the Player turns out to be a no-go criteria for working with the Programming Environment on the VMware Player. There are just too many "sign keys" which are different. I decided finally to continue to do this work on the Windows XP Mode. The quirks I encounter when using the Programming Environment on the XP mode are a smaller handicap compared to working with wrong keyboard on the VMware Player.

I installed W xp on the Player and it appears to function well, except that using the keyboard is now a little bit quirky. When installing W xp the procedure suggested to install the German keyboard. This was almost, but unfortunately not quite correct. The installed driver relates to this keyboard here https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/German/Appendices/Keyboard Note the remark below the figure: "German and Austrian keyboard layout, but remember that Switzerland does not use this layout." My computer does acually have this "odd" one, namely the Swiss-German keyboard as shown here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Swiss.svg  Do I have chance to get finally a correct driver working? FYI: Looking at the installed keyboard drivers in my W7prof shows: i8042prt.sys kbdclass.sys VMkbd.sys I presume that the last two drivers where added during the Player installation.
