just for the record, I suspect this is a nonsense answer to keep you from getting a refund.  If they can electronically take your money, they certainly can give it back.
And I tried, workstation and player vmx files don't play nicely.

Always pay by CC.  VMware support is terrible.  Just reverse the charges, and it will sort itself out.

I run a number of VMs for my work, all Windows 10 Pro.  I'm in the middle of migrating to a new laptop, and one of the VMs will no long sleep - either with the VMWarwe pause button or from Windows Power settings displaying the error: "Failed to suspend the virtual machine: Internal checkpoint error." The same VM works fine on my old laptop.  Other VMs on the new laptop suspend just fine.  I read about the read only possibililty - already checked this.  Also read through https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Pro/WS-Pro-15-5-quot-Failed-to-suspend-the-virtual-machine-quot/td-p/517197 but no joy there.   Suggestions?  It would so happen that this is a fairly important VM.   Thanks
Andrew - thanks bud.  I'll check it out and get back to you.

Windows 10 Pro guest running on a Windows 10 Pro machine - 64GB ram, all SSDs.  Base system responds fine.  I'm into the process of migrating a development project into it's own VM.  Everything seemed to be fine yesterday, then.... I've run into performance issues before, but this is a new one for me.  The mouse moves fine as I navigate across the display within the VM.  There is no stutter as I've seen before.  But for some reason, I may need multiple mouse clicks to select a Window or a menu option or a file.  The lag is really weird. I might click once and move the mouse... and the click then applies to where the mouse is.  The keyboard lags as well, having a bursty response at times. I've rebooted, re-installed VMWare Tools, etc.  All the standard stuff. Any ideas?
hey, I don't know this CG guy, but I just found his post and it solved my mouse stutter problem.   face palm
Unfortunately not. I need to clarify my comment - my issue has always been mouse stutter _not_ flickering pointers.  Sorry for confusing the thread.

I'm a relatively happy user of VMWare Workstation Pro.  Started with player, bought 14, upgraded to 15, looking at 16. Scanning through all of the posts in the first few pages here, the only thing I can conclude is "upgrade to help VMWare debug."  But that's just the old fart, got the t-shirt and scars in me. But seriously, is their a succinct list of things I need or might want as a developer?  I really don't care about cloud integration and what not.  I use VMs to isolate customers, protect code bases and development environments, and make system backups trivial. Appreciate any advice.

Having suffered with various surprises over the years with VMWorkstation - yes, I paid for it, I expect nothing from vmware.  That said, this issue has been corrected by people fooling around and seeing if it gets better - case in point, the alleged NVidia drivers.  Some saw it works, I've marched through about 10 releases and had no joy.
good luck.  If you're a new customer, you might still be under support.  I cannot think of a time when someone from VMWare actually wandered by.  Me?  I'm checking out VirtualBox.  Kick it's tires.

Sadly, I am going to have to follow another contributor in this thread - migrate to VirtualBox.  It's free, and things cannot get any worse.  I'm going to make it this week's project as a test.  My take on VMware is that if you want something fixed, you have to pay for support.  I rarely see practical feedback from the development team in the forums.  Since VirtualBox is open source, there are probably millions of developers passionately supporting it,, because they don't have a life For me, I've used VMWorkstation Pro for years supporting older legacy systems.  From a hardware support perspective, it generally just works.  My typical development environment includes a USB 2.0 hub, a USB 3.0 hub and many usb to serial devices.  So it must work.  Should be an interesting test. best of luck

I actually have two machines. My main server (Ryzhen 9) and my laptop (Intel i7).  I mainly work on my laptop with the VMs.   I found that no manner of driver changes affected my mouse behavior - just turning off 3d acceleration helped. When it comes to VMware and updates,, follow the golden rule: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." To be fair to VMware, apply that rule to Windows and Mac OS as well.

Going to reply to my own post with a possible solution.  Over in this thread:  https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Pro/Workstation-15-5-5-performance-hit/m-p/1863135  a suggestions were made to see if a similar but not quite the same issue with WS 16 could be resolved.  One idea was to turn off 3D hardware acceleration: Edit virtual machine settings -> Display -> 3D graphics -> uncheck accelerate 3D graphics. save and start the VM.  All of my machines are behaving now.  I suppose I lose some performance, but these are all development platforms, and I don't need accelerated 3d graphics.  Maybe this will help someone. My belief is that a couple of things are going on here, as I have seen this mouse stutter on a number of versions and I want to say mainly NVidia cards (can't prove that though).  I haven't bothered to do exhaustive testing, but I do know a few things: It does not seem to be specific to an NVidia driver release.  I went through 4 different driver builds from NVidia.  Nothing helped.  Includes rebooting host machine as well as VMs. It is not related to the guest OS.  The stutter happens across my Xp, Windows 7 and Windows 10 virtual machines. What I don't know is if later versions of WS 15.5.x turned on 3d graphics acceleration as a default or not.  It feels like some odd interaction between WS Pro and NVidia.

sadly this is VMware behavior for a very long time.  It's the community contributors that usually fix things or find work arounds.. HOWEVER, I seem to have resolved my mouse stutter problem.  After upgrading to 15.5.7, my mouse radically slowed when moving through menus.  I came across this discussion: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Pro/Workstation-15-5-5-performance-hit/m-p/1863135 which had someone from VMware post some ideas. Maybe this will help.

Andy -   What NVidia card do you have?  I must respectfully disagree with your conclusion.  Using your post, I grabbed the version you suggested, one before it,, and two after it including the latest.  In my case - VMs running on my base laptop (i7 with 64GB of ram and a 1070) suffer from mouse stutter (so I am a little different from the OP who is using RDP).  The VMs are Xp, Windows 7 and Windows 10.  Oddly, the stutter is worse when mousing over menus and what not.   Changing the mouse input mode only makes matters worse. This issue comes and goes for me.  I had been running 15.5.5 happily, and I gave in to the nagging of 15.5.7.  As soon as I applied 15.5.7, this mouse issue started.  I've gone back to 15.5.6, and it's still stuttering.  Based on my notes, people using versions of 14.x have seen this as well. regards,

8 months later.. just installed 15.5.7 build-17171714 since it was nagging me.   Same terrible issue with mouse stutter in hosted operating systems:: Xp 7 and 10.  Interestingly, the mouse moves fine across the desktop background... it's not until you get into the menus where the lag starts.  Time to rollback my installation (again). So, VMWare, do your support people ever read the forums?  You're pestering me to upgrade to Pro 16, but I see no reason to bother.
