After many years of using VMWare Workstation (currently v 15.5.6) to create and use DotNet (Visual studio, SQL, IIS) Development Environments, and trying to follow best practices, I'm finally looking for the right settings (Swap, disks, etc) to give me a development machine that is as responsive and efficient as possible. Best practices seem to vary by source, so I thought I'd expand my search into the userbase. My host is running Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon (soon to be 20) Intel i4790K running at 4GHz 32 GB Ram SSD for root and /home filesystems 8Gb Swap also on SSD, typically about 500M in use when VMs running Development Guest (May be 1 or possibly 2 running at a time in virtual network): Windows 10 , configured with 2 Processors 4GB memory, and single virtual disk per VM settings. So, my question is what configurations others might recommend to make the Guest feel as much like pure iron as possible, without killing the Host for other things.
Same thing with WIn7 guest in Mint17. Seems to only have started happening after I made a disk size change and had to reactivate my Win license in the host.

Sorry if this has been answered, but I couldn't find anything definitive on here. I recently changed from Ubuntu 11.04 to running Linux Mint 16, 64 bit as my host OS, kernel 3.11.0-12-generic with 8GB of memory. The change was mostly warranted by my distaste for the Unity desktop, but I'm almost ready to go back if I can't figure out the right settings. FWIW, my Linux expertise is probably about a 4 on a scale of 10, but where I'm weakest is in the area of "under the hood" configuration. My /tmp is ridiculously big, possibly due to an error in the install. My CPU is a a reasonably good Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz I really haven't done any host tweaking as of yet, but I really think I need to as I just don't think the default settings are giving me the kind of guest performance I was used to with Ubuntu. Mouse clicks are spotty, redraws are slow at times, etc. My guests are where I typically do all my heavy work - windows Visual Studio development, web authoring, etc, and really only use the host OS for the simplest of tasks - browsing, listening to music, light document work. My original motivation for going with a Linux host was simply to avoid the Windows tax for a 64 bit host OS. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. NOTE: I can certainly add any logs, settings, etc that are needed; just didn't know what might be helpful.
