Indeed it seems that the "non ASCII" characters can be the cause. In fact these are ASCII but not in the same code page I think. Note that once the drag/drop failed because of this, there is no way to copy any other file by drag/drop (forbiden sign as mouse cursor). I can only restart the VM as it seems that the Dnd hanged .... Thanks again for your help.

The problem seems to be solved when rebooting the Host. Clues to find the cause : \- most of the times I just 'hibernate' the host when quiting my job \- most of the times I just 'suspend' the guests to come back when I'll need them \- I use a lot of USB 2 devices which can be plugged/unplugged anytime ... Maybe a combination of this caused the guest and the host to be unable to communicate anymore until reboot ?

Hi, I receive the "Cannot determine local file size You may not have permission to perform the operation Aborting the file copy operation" message when trying to copy a file from a local hard drive (any of them) to the guest desktop. I tried this both by drag'n drop or copy/paste. Sometimes though it works because I remember copying files this way. Does this have something to do with the file name ? (many dots in it) Environment : Host = XP Guest = XP File size = 11 Mb Sample File name = Setupv1.1.3.exe Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I spend almost an hours trying to understand how to install the vmscsi driver (asked when upgrading a XP Pro VM to Vista Business. Here is what I did, if anyone else needs the same explanation. The download is found in the download page (drivers tab), currently : http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp Once downloaded : \- start the XP VM \- choose to connect the A: drive to an image -> browse to the vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp file \- when asked by Vista setup browse to the A: drive \- validate the choice of the SCSI driver found on A: Setup will go on ... Hope this helps

Just another info after the solution. After setting the vmnet0 as described above I discovered that the bridged network did not work. My VM was unable to connect the internet. Solution : \- shutdown the VM \- open the VWare Network settings \- in the DHCP tab remove the DHCP activated for vmnet0 \- click OK \- restart VM This way the VM will be a DHCP client as the host computer. Bye

I did stop/start WMWare but I also had to restart computer to enable everything. Thank you again everything works now, and for those having the same problem here is the full solution (which worked for me) to avoid you reading the full post : \- access the network connections in Windows control panel \- double click the chosen network adapter for bridging \- add the "VMWare Bridge Protocol" if not found -> browse to the VMWare installation dir (default C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation) -> choose "netbridge.inf" \- restart computer \- open Edit..Virtual Network Settings \- go to the "Automatic Bridge" tab \- unckeck "Automatically choose an available physical network adapter to bridge to vmnet0" \- go to the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab \- select the network adapter in the Vmnet0 drop down list \- click ok Hope this will help someone else.

Thank you for your quick answer. I had to add the "VMWare Bridge Protocol" in the physical net adapter properties as it was not listed. Thank you for that. "Automatically choose ..." cannot be unchecked as it is disabled. The vmnet0 drop down is empty in "Host Virtual Network Mapping". Hi, First the context : \- XP Media Center (up to date) \- VMWare Workstation 5.5.3 \- Sony Vaio PC VGC VA1 \- One ethernet card connected \- One wireless embedded, on but not not connected This message appears when starting a VM and thus this VM has no bridged network. I have browsed many messages on forums and tried a few things, uninstall/install even with a command line to clean the previous install ... Nothing appears to work so far. Any help would be great ! PS : I tried installing the same VMWare Workstation on another PC (Vaio laptop) and everything is just fine on this one.
