I had previously used FC5 as a host. The installation of FC5 was not straightforward, nor an easy task for me. Once installed, the installation of VMware was also a headache. It may have been me, but that's what happened. Then a coworker turned me on to Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu 6.10 on a Dell Inspiron Duo. The installation of the host was a snap. Installing VMware 5.5.3 was also a snap. I am using Windows XP as the guest OS. So far, I only have problems with using a USB memory stick on the the guest. I got around this by simply sharing the device between host and guest.
Kevin, I've posted a detailed procedure that I used to re-create the problem. Just look for all of my posts here. It was a week or so ago.... Ray
I am simply using the share capabilities! I shared /media/usbstick Now I can transfer files between guest and host!! Phewwwww...
So, what updates in particular would I be looking at for the Dell Inspiron 9400 Duo?

I am seeing something similar on my Dell Inspiron Duo. I have Ubuntu 6.10 as host with VMware guest as Windows XP, SP2.... For instance, sometimes when I am browsing the internet using IE from the guest, and I am at a website that has drop down menus (Yahoo Finance is usually the one that does it for me) the entire box freezes. Can't do anything. After a few minutes (I didn't time it), everything comes back and all is ok??? Weird.....
I am doing nothing with the guest, yet VM is constantly flashing the icon. There is no CD in the drive.....
VM Workstation 5.5.3 w/WinXP SP2 Guest Host is Unbuntu 6.10
At the bottom of the VM window (not the guest window) the icon for the CR-Rom is constantly flashing? Is that normal??? This is VM WS 5.5.3

1. Added "usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0" to the host /etc/fstab file as recommended in Doc ID: 3862823 2. Restarted host. 3. Plugged in Cruzer 2.0mb stick, Host auto-recognizes USB memory stick and pops up usbdisk - File Browser. Cool. 4. Fired up VMware XP host. (USB still inserted) VM -> Removable Devices -> USB Devices -> SanDisk Corp U3 Cruzer Micro = NOT CHECKED 5. Clicked on the "VM -> Removable Devices -> USB Devices -> SanDisk Corp U3 Cruzer Micro" 6. VM popped a Question box - "A USB device is about to be unplugged from the host and connected to this virtual machine. It will first be stopped to enable safe removal. With some devices the host may display the message: The device can be safely removed" 7. Clicked OK to the above Question Box. 8. Another Question Box popped: "The specified device appears to be claimed by another driver (usb-storage) on the host operating system which means that the device may be in use. To continue, the device will first be disconnected from it's current driver. 9. Clicked OK in the above Question Box. USB disconnected from host. 10. Guest recognized the USB stick but pops a "Hint" box: "Your VM has sent an ATAPI(CD-ROM) command that is supported only when programming the drive via DMA. You will need to configure you Guest operating system to use DMA when communicating with DVD/CD-Rom devices." Question: Why is VM sending commands to the CD-Rom at this point??? And how do I configure the guest WinXP for this? 11. Clicked OK to the Hint box. 12. The VM Windows XP went to Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). This is reproduceable!!![/b] I have a screen shot of the BSOD but don't know how to include it here. Some of the info in the screen capture is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Technical Information: STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x67536541, 0x00000002, 0x0000001, 0xF9C86F2D) usbuhci.sys - Address F9C86F2D base at F9C84000, Datestamp 41107d62 HELP!!!!
