After recovering from a corrupt VMWAREVM bundle by using the "Copy" option instead of "Move", I had to re-Activate Windows 10 and now USB drives that can currently be read by all other machines including Mac and Windows, get the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug it into the MacBook Pro running macOS 10.15.7 and choose to see it in the guest VM with Windows 10. In Windows Device Manager, all these devices then appear with a warning "Unknown USB Device (Invalid Device Descriptor)" only in this VM and not on any other machines. I have followed the uninstall steps for VMWare 11.5.7 and reinstalled it and all the VMWare Tools.  Nothing I have done has changed anything about the result. Based on this article: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/57195 I note that in macOS System Preferences | Security & Privacy | General, I no longer see the option (that I remember seeing at some point in the past) to click on "Allow" to enable 'System software from developer  "VMWare, Inc"'. There is also NO message like this: "System software from developer VMWare, Inc. was blocked from loading". I have NOT tried adding the following line to the VMX file: usb.generic.keepStreamsEnabled = "FALSE" I have the ZIP file of information gathered with verbose USB messages enabled, if that would help. Next step?

Thank you.  While awaiting your reply, I decided that there as no danger in proceeding roughly as you had suggested on my external drive. However, I did not know about the "Register" process so I started the VM on the external drive.  Yes, it did ask "Copy or Move" but I chose "Copy". Apparently, deleting the 2 snapshots accomplished the "commit" operation as needed before splitting the disk. After taking about 6 hours to reconfigure the VM disk as split (it ended up choosing 16MGB files and I didn't see it offer to use a different size) I copied the bundle back to the Mac and when I started it, I again chose "Copy" and all has been working well. Subsequently, I have copied the VM bundle (now 450GB) to a fast external SSD and that only took about 15 minutes.  As long as I don't start the VM there, I guess the Copy/Move issue will not arise with using that copy.   Q1) Do I need to do the Register process on the copy on that SSD, or is that only needed if one will perform operations on it while it is not running? Q2) Is there some other issue I should be concerned with since I had used Copy instead of Move?  For some reason, I thought I had read advice to use Copy even if that is counter-intuitive, but that was probably in a different situation in that they didn't wish to fire up the VM to confirm that it works correctly on the external drive.

On macOS 10.5.7 Catalina, I'm running Windows 10 in a Fusion 11.5.7 VM that was originally created in 2011.  I understand that the ancient practices of creating a VM are no longer the default and I'd like to use the existing VM as the source to create a new VM that employs modern configuration parameters.  I read somewhere that new VM are created with parameters that make things like resizing and maybe space reclamation more likely to succeed (when you choose "Split into multiple files" instead of "Pre-allocate disk space") The VM is for a 500GB drive for Windows but currently occupies 700GB of space on the Mac, so I'd like to consolidate snapshots too, as I understand that this would reclaim some space.  The Mac drive is only 1TB so it's not big enough to do this in-place, but I have a large external drive from which I have started the VM with no problem except that it's slow from there. Q1) Is there a process for migrating a VM to a new one that is created using different configuration parameters?  (I tried creating a new VM and selecting "Import" but when other existing VMWAREVM files are displayed for selection, they are disabled and cannot be selected) Q2) If migration from one VM to another is possible like this, is there a list the steps for doing this migration? Q3) Would it be better (though maybe slower) to have both the migration source and target VM on the external drive, or does it make sense to take advantage of the speed of the Mac's internal drive by having one end on the Mac?  If so, target the Mac so then one could see the differences immediately after completion?

Thanks for confirming what I figured the answer would be. I have seldom restored the VM for the 500GB guest drive for Windows, but I recently did actually fire up the VM from an external drive just to see if it would work.  Of course it was slow, but it appeared to be all normal.  I realize that this means I am more fortunate than the average user you try to help.  Of course, we cannot really rely on backups unless we regularly test the restore process and few people do that, even among the minority that make the backups. The only significant downside of this now is that I will have to retrieve the 800GB package over the 'net because I didn't make a 2nd recent backup to a drive I brought with me.  Won't make that mistake again.

Thanks for that info. If I thought that I knew how long it would take, I could decide accordingly about letting the Cancel process continue to run. As of now, Activity Monitor reports over 2.25TB of data being read and most of that is since the Cancel was started.  The guest disk is only 500GB and the VM package is about 800GB.  AM reports that it's only written 32GB in that time, so this is what makes me wonder if it would ever complete. Q4) Do you have an opinion about whether any actual progress is being made in the Cancel process? I have a full backup of the Windows VM from a couple of weeks ago, and all work since then has been backed up to multiple external devices and that includes some USB drives I have with me on the road. Though I'd have to retrieve that 800GB VM package over the Internet, I can restore the old VM and then get things like Windows updates to make it current and restore from my USB drives.  But of course, it would be nice to avoid that if possible.

In Fusion 11.5.7 under macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) I have tried to use the Cleanup Virtual Machine (for a Windows 10 VM) process because it shows 24.9GB of reclaimable space.  This resulted in a progress bar that reached the end and stayed there for a few hours.  (It also shows 32GB of snapshots that I was not aware of and intended to address after the Cleanup.  Not sure why the Hard Disk Size is only 82.4GB and the Total Size is only 114.4GB. After reading messages about this topic of problems with the Cleanup's "Reclaiming" step, I decided to try the Cancel option.  Now, I just get "Canceling. Please wait..." and the progress bar also is at the end (right end) which suggests it is complete. The VMWAREVM file is 807GB for a 500GB guest drive on a 1TB host that has about 100GB of free space.  I do not have sufficient space on the host to regenerate the VM in one piece.   Q1) Would VMWare have offered the "Cleanup Virtual Machine" and subsequent "Reclaim space" option when there was insufficient diskspace for that operation? I do not know if this VM was set up as a single file but I suspect that it was because it was created a decade ago when that might have been the default. All operations are compromised by the macOS UI being slow despite Activity Monitor only showing about 39% for VMWare Fusion as the only app consuming more than 10%. Activity Monitor shows over 550GB data read but only 22GB written. Q2) Is it safe to close the lid on this MacBook Pro 2016 while this "Please wait..." message is displayed.  I must travel tomorrow and will not have wall power for several hours and I doubt the battery will last long enough to continue the current activity for 8 hours. Q3) Is it safe to use Force Quit on Fusion or will that damage the VM?

The machine has 8GB of RAM and half is dedicated to VMWare Fusion 11.5.3 and the RAM is PCIe which should be faster than regular SSD of the day. The MBP 2016 15" came with macOS Mojave but now as latest Catalina 10.15.4 The guest is Windows 10 (1909) which is the same as on a desktop that doesn't exhibit any graphical anomalies using no VM. Accelerate 3D Graphics is selected 256MB is the shared graphics limit I do not specify "Use full resolution for Retina display". Battery Life is set to "Use High Performance Graphics for 3D Applications Only" The MacBook Pro is running on AC power. In MS-Excel 2019, vertical scrolling a small spreadsheet is slow and jumpy. When running apps I build, dragging the sliders to change contrast or brightness on a small JPG file (2MB) in the VM on the MBP, I see that the slider just jumps to the ending location as the image is updated all at once instead of incrementally, whereas on an old Windows desktop with no VM, the graphics are smooth. Is this expected performance?  Are there changes to settings I could consider that would improve this?  Any other selections?

Yes, my laptop is the 15" MacBook Pro WITH the touch-bar, which I mostly love. AND I think you have probably guessed correctly that since the Suspend option is often offered on the touch-bar just above the 5 key, bumping it is what I'm doing.  If that's the case, it has nothing to do with profiles or short-cut key assignments. Since the whole purpose of the touch-bar is to have generated buttons that change in accordance with context, I will have to run the apps in which this problem occurred to note what is in the touch-bar at that time. I think my previous answer, lacking a screen-shot, failed to convey that I did go to that Preferences screen and saw the settings that indicated "Profile - Default" and that the other box you asked about was left un-checked.  I'm only running one VM on this machine, so there's no confusion there. I will see if I can change the contents of the touch-bar so that the Suspend button and all other Fusion-related buttons are elsewhere in the bar, or absent entirely. To stress why I know the provided answer must be correct, let me remind a key part of the description of the symptom: "This seems to happen mostly when I'm using numbers 5 and/or 6 on the MacBook Pro 2016 (High Sierra and Mojave) keyboard" Here we see the placement of the Suspend virtual key on the touch-bar is above and almost exactly between the 5 and 6 keyboard keys.

I do have "Profile - Default" I do NOT have the "Mac Host keyboard shortcuts" enabled Does that combination tell us anything about my symptoms? I forgot to mention that I encounter this on the laptop's internal keyboard and trackpad, but when I'm working with an external keyboard and the Apple Magic Trackpad, I don't think I've encountered this.... that's what makes me think I'm bumping something on the laptop keyboard or trackpad that I don't do on the external keyboard.... which is the large external keyboard with full-size arrow keys that are not surrounded by any other keys. Thanks for your help
Yes, that worked perfectly.  Thanks.

When I'm working in VMWare 11 Windows 10 client side, I often bump some key combination that causes the Suspend of the VM.  This seems to happen mostly when I'm using numbers 5 and/or 6 on the MacBook Pro 2016 (High Sierra and Mojave) keyboard along with arrow buttons as I'm editing any numeric value.  I could be accidentally pressing a number key and and arrow key at the same time, and I also could be bumping the trackpad as I'm typing. What I'd like is to just disable all ways of triggering a Suspend of the VM except by explicitly choosing it in the VMWare menu, or by closing the lid.

Thanks, I'll try another venue that is not VM-specific. I have resorted to the folder shortcuts for similar things but didn't think that the motivations for doing so could be quite as extreme or common as you've experienced, though this case has me using streams of profanity with the word "Windows" in there a lot due to its general flakiness that continues to disappoint.

I have 3 machines and each can ping the other two, and all 3 can access the Internet.  All are on the same workgroup. ThinkPad T60p running XP-SP3 New i5 desktop running Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. MacBook Pro i7 came with Lion, runs Fusion 4.1.3 and Win7 Ultimate 64-bit The WinXP-SP3 laptop: 1) in workgroup computers, can see and access folders on the Win7 desktop. 2) was seeing the VM on the MBP but could not access it, but at the moment it's disappeared on the XP laptop. 3) The "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder" is running. The Win7 desktop 1) doesn't see the other machines in Network The VM-Win7 on the MBP 1) doesn't see the other machines in Network 2) Network adapter is set to NAT Both Win7 machines are set to a "Work network" so homegroup does not apply. Both Win7 machines have in their "Home or Work (current profile)": 1) Turn on network discovery 2) Turn on file and printer sharing 3) Enable file sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryption 4) Turn off password protected sharing (though all 3 machines have an account of the same name and password) 5) Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers 6) Windows Firewall is OFF for "Home or work (private) networks" The Win7 desktop also has Norton 360 on it, but it's not stopping the XP machine from accessing its shared folders. The only thing that I can find that's different about the 2 Win 7 network settings is that on the desktop the network is named "Network 2" and in the VM it is named "Network". Can you think of something I've missed here that is hiding the machines from the other's Network display?
