Quality of instruction online versus classroom. . .

All:

Of the courses I have taken in the past around my area, the instructors did not seem to be all that knowledgeable about real world application of the products. I don't fault them for that, as they are professional instructors, and not professional implementers. But I am going to sign up for vSphere training, and I have a question.

Knowing that the local instructors aren't all that great, is the quality of the online instructors any better? I understand the advantage of doing it online, as far as no travel, etc. But are there other advantages? There is zero cost advantage, so there has to be something else it offers that classroom training does not.

Thanks!

Hantra,

The live-online version of our courses provides a comparable learning experience to the traditional classroom in that you do have the same lectures delivered by a live instructor (alothough you don't get to see the instructor), using the same course materials and the same remote-access lab servers. No travel expense is, as you noted, the obvious advantage of live-online. Beyond that, if the class size exceeds 12, we put two instructors on the class, in which case one can be lecturing while the other can answer questions via chat. Also, students appreciate the Webex breakout sessions where they can selectively team with other students and/or an instructor to work through labs. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts once you take the live-online class. Good luck!

The online course is pretty standard across the board in terms of materials and modules but you missed the live experience seeing friends/colleagues and share knowledge by approaching in person. You may communicate live chat online but that's something you have to decide if you're comfortable having a virtual classroom. Also, it saves you a lot of money for flight and hotel expenses and with this virtual online class you can sit at your desk or on your bed and still login and study fine. It has some pros and cons and really its something you might decide but for the quality of the course, its all the same. I believe in person training its more dynamic and best way to networking with other professionals and good excuse to travel!

I follow some course online (SRM, VI Design, View Workshop) and the quality was of instruction very good.

You need a good (and stable) Internet connection (especially for labs) a "large" monitor and a speakerphone/headset (cause in my cases the audio part was only available with phone callback).

Welcome to the Forums - having worked as a contract instructor for VMware I know the requirements for becoming an instructor - they are designed to insure top quality in knowledge and delivery and after every class the students are to fill out an evaluation on the course and instructor and I can speak form experience there is follow up when there negative comments about the instructor there is follow up - it is these same certified instructor who deliver both on line and in person classes -

Thanks for the information.

I am only going off my experience in the past with Microsoft instructors. This will be my first VMWare class.

VMware values the quality of their instructors - employee, contractor

or through an authorized training center

The qualification process for a VMware Certified Instructor is very strict, and there is an ongoing review process performed by VMware themselves which can highlight any potential issues.
