Uem to DEM upgrade process

We are looking at updating dem we are at 9.6 going to 2103. We already did the agent update and are now doing the manager are there any changes we need to be aware of? We also need to update our windows capture components for 20H2 instead of 1803 does this is happen automatically on the update or what’s a good procedure to do this? Is there any need to update the GPO’s when going between these two versions?

Hi @Stansfield,

A lot of features have been added since UEM 9.6, so I'd suggest to take a look at the release notes for 9.7 and up. Nothing in particular to be aware of when it comes to upgrading the Management Console; maintaining backwards compatibility is something we take quite seriously.

There's no need to update your existing GPOs.

I'm unclear on what you mean by "We also need to update our windows capture components for 20H2 instead of 1803". Can you elaborate on that?

We built our windows settings capture with the default templates for the window and office 2016 settings capture in 1803 and linked clones.   It is not wildly effective at capturing settings for those systems. I was wondering if DEM would prompt us to update the templates after updating DEM on first open or do I have to manually update the templates afterwards and what the best way to do that is?

Hi @Stansfield,

Any personalization config files referencing a built-in Application Template or Windows Common Setting that has been updated since 9.6 will indeed prompt you to upgrade it once you select it in the updated Management Console.

After we updated Manager to 2103 the only update we got is to network printers. There were no office updates even though the template for office 2016 is from 2019 at latest and none of the windows built-in settings (latest from 2019) updated other than network printers when we clicked on them. Is this normal and are there updates for those? If so how do we get them?

The upgrade process is fairly simple first upgrade the agent on the desktops then upgrade the management console followed by upgrading.

I checked the update history since 9.6, and that is indeed correct. The only real change was to the Printers - Mapped network printers Windows Common Setting in 2103. We also renamed the Office 2016 templates to include "/2019/365" in the name (in 2006, I think), but their definitions have not changed, hence no update trigger for your existing config files. (And, for completeness: we added Default applications in 9.10, but as that's a new setting it won't trigger an update either.)
